These guys are predators. That's for sure.

But who are these idiots who go to these strangers' homes to camp out simply because the stranger is a youtube "celebrity?" Did anyone tell them of stranger danger? How the hell did they manage to allude the guys with vans who were giving away "free candy"? You don't know these guys. They are putting the best light on themselves on their videos. When the cameras go off, they could be real creeps. And it turns out quite a few are.

What has happened to common sense in the age of youtube?

Sure, but the majority of the girls who watch his videos were probably unconfident teenagers. Alex buttered hem up, said sweet things to them, and was 'kind' enough to let them stay round his house. I'm sure there are many failed attempts where Alex tried to invite a girl over, but refused. It may not be smart, but YouTube vloggers can make you feel like you know the guy.

And teenagers tend to act like dumbasses because, fuck, they're teenagers. They simply should not be held to the same standards as adults.

14-17?!!! Where the hell were these girls' parents? From what I've read, most of these girls came from out of town to stay in Alex's house. What were these parents thinking with being fine with their kids staying at a barely not a stranger's home? (They knew Alex through his youtube channel.) It's the parents' job to watch over their kids because like you said, teenagers tend to act like dumbasses. So you need adults to make sure they last for another day. Where were the parents?

They weren't girls aged 14-17, they were young men and women 18-23. Tom Milsom was the one who was sleeping with an underage girl and that was in America (it would have been legal in England where Alex Day lives).

If you put yourself in a dangerous position and something happens to you, yes you're partially at fault. Doesn't mean you deserved it, just means you should have heeded the countless warnings you've gotten in life about doing stupid shit that could get you hurt or killed. I don't care if it's victim blaming because I'm not stupid enough to think that because someone wore a certain outfit they were asking to be raped. And I don't think these victims deserved to be raped or have anything else happen to them. But I do think that people between the ages of about 14 and 25 need to wake the fuck up about personal responsibility and stop putting themselves in dangerous positions and then acting like they didn't. Go read the accusations against Alex Day and then explain to me how none of those LEGAL ADULTS put themselves in a stupidly dangerous position despite the fact that they're textbook stupidly dangerous positions.

As a 24 year old, there is a world of difference between the mentality of a 14 year old and someone in their mid twenties. A kid doing something without thinking it all the way through should not be judged or held to the same standards as a 25 year old. Because, holy shit, teens are stupid and easy to take advantage of.

Okay, but the problem is we live in a society that tends to place the entire blame on the victim while completely ignoring the actions of the bag of dicks that hurt the victim. The person who hurts the victim bears all the moral responsibility. They're the only one who did something morally wrong. But that doesn't mean the victim didn't make mistakes.

We have bears where I live. We have rules about how to store trash so it doesn't attract bears. Every few years someone doesn't do what they're supposed to and a bear will wander into our neighborhood. Sometimes the bear kills a dog that's outside, sometimes it just scares us all half to death and then animal control lures it away. And then no one neglects to do what they're supposed to with their trash for the next few years.

Real life examples of consequences are proven to discourage people from making decisions that lead to them. Even sexual assault.

Plenty of people get attacked or sexually assaulted by doing nothing to bring it upon themselves. these were young, preteen to ten fangirls. hey, maybe when you were 14-17 you were above any kind of idolatry of authors or singer or franchises, but the fact remains these were fangirls of youtubers whose appeal is specifically molded around appeal to these girls and these guys, a good bit older than them (19-21) specifically came onto them.

and then proceeded to try and initiate sexual relations with people they KNEW idolized them to some degree (not to mention vulnerable in the sense of being younger and inexperienced), using coercive and manipulative tactics if they in any way resisted.


like, how young does "underage" have to be for you to start thinking maybe the LARGE MAJORITY of the onus goes on the asshole who deliberately sought out young, naive girls that were predisposed to trust and idolize him and used their inexperience and idolatry as a way to get away with treating them like shit? 13? 12? 10?

There's something that's always bothered me about this notion, and I am going to try to put it into words. Please bear with me.

Apart from family members, every person with whom you have a relationship starts out as a stranger. The first time you hang out with or go on a date with someone, you know very little about them. The first time you go over to someone's house, you still generally know very little about them. The first time you kiss someone, you still don't know too terribly much (I'm basing this off of the notion that most people kiss someone for the first time only a few dates in, and while a few dates is enough to know whether one piques romantic interest, it's not enough to really "know" that person).

In the process of forming relationships, we constantly expose ourselves. You can't form a relationship without exposing yourself.

On top of that, even if you get to know someone, that person might still wind up doing something horrible to you. Most assaults are not committed by someone the victim knew.

I'm not saying that it was wise of these girls to do what they did. But I really don't like the idea that there's something wrong and nonsensical about doing something with a stranger, or that it's more dangerous to do something with a stranger.
