Presumably "Christian". The "X" is sometimes adopted as a shorthand (going back to the use of the Greek letter chi for the same purpose).

Should have figured that out. Thanks!

Don't feel bad, I didn't get it either.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea either!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...I think it's a lame-ass way to say 'Christian', like saying 'x-mas' for christmas. What I can't figure out is if it's a respect thing (like spelling God ad G-d) or a dismissal thing.

Either way it drives me nuts and I can't take it seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's neither, it's just a neutral abbreviation. Like quantumreality said it comes from the Greek - chi is the first letter of christos, and the symbol for chi is an X.,

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, depends. A *lot* of people use it as a dismissal thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's lazy and annoying, whatever else it is.

I've always interpreted it as a dismissal thing because (until now I guess) I've only seen it used by non-religious people who are being derisive of Christianity. It could just be lazy, though. It's definitely not a respect thing lol.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This has never been my experience FWIW and I've always interpreted it as totally neutral and I feel like I've seen it used by religious believing Christians.

I don't care one way or another about the religion, but I AM lazy. So I always abbreviate it.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-04-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You've never been in a church that had a chi-rho, a symbol that goes back before Constantine?

Yeah, I don't think I've seen it much used by Christians. Sort of like an even more obscure "x-mas." It's not inherently dismissive, but it strikes me as an odd thing to do unless you don't care, or are trying to make a point (about how much you don't care).

People use it for all kinds of purposes; it's an abbreviation that predates the English language, so it's probably here to stay

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Christian. Though, it does make me wonder if they're actually christian since the whole reason most people take "christ" out of words is because they want nothing to do with the religion [Ex. Christmas becoming Xmas.]

[personal profile] queerwolf 2014-04-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes me think it's a troll secret then. Maybe not, but yeah, I'm Christian and I would never abbreviate it that way.

"chi"/X is the first letter of christos/Χριστός, and the symbol for chi is an X.

Just like the number of the beast if ΧΞς

I'm a Christian and I don't mind using "Xmas" because it is a long word, but I've never used "Xian". That may be ironic because Christmas is only one letter longer than Christian.

Oh look, one of you is here!

"Taking Christ out of the word" has nothing to do with it. As others have said, it derives from a Greek letter and has been used to stand for Christ since the very beginning of the religion.

A city in Central China that was once the capital of the Tang Dynasty, also known as the Golden Age of China. It is well known for it's ancient Muslim heritage and peculiar streetplan, which was copied during the building of Peking (Beijing) and Kyoto.

Or it could just be another way of saying 'Christ-ian'.

All in all though, I like the first explanation better. There's just so much to talk about regarding Chinese-Muslim relations it's a wonder why no one has really talked about it!

Best answer.

Not just Chinese-Muslim relations, Chinese history and Chinese culture is just super fascinating. I'm far from an expert but it's great stuff. And for instance a lot of the poetry produced in that Golden Age, often by people from Xian/Chang'an, is amazing.

Oooh, do you know a lot about Chinese-Muslim history? I only know the stuff I learnt in secondary school so not much, but it's always interested me. I know there are still little Muslim villages in China, I imagine they must be very quaint!
