What the hell is Xian?

Presumably "Christian". The "X" is sometimes adopted as a shorthand (going back to the use of the Greek letter chi for the same purpose).

...I think it's a lame-ass way to say 'Christian', like saying 'x-mas' for christmas. What I can't figure out is if it's a respect thing (like spelling God ad G-d) or a dismissal thing.

Either way it drives me nuts and I can't take it seriously.

Christian. Though, it does make me wonder if they're actually christian since the whole reason most people take "christ" out of words is because they want nothing to do with the religion [Ex. Christmas becoming Xmas.]

A city in Central China that was once the capital of the Tang Dynasty, also known as the Golden Age of China. It is well known for it's ancient Muslim heritage and peculiar streetplan, which was copied during the building of Peking (Beijing) and Kyoto.

Or it could just be another way of saying 'Christ-ian'.

All in all though, I like the first explanation better. There's just so much to talk about regarding Chinese-Muslim relations it's a wonder why no one has really talked about it!

Well probably the majority of religious people on f!s are Christian. I'd rather have people discussing what they actually know than making ignorant statements just to include other religions they know nothing about.

Off topic, but it took me forever to figure out what people on the internet meant when they said "Xian." For the longest time, I thought it was a Chinese word and was so confused.

I hate how people here say "religion" when they obviously mean Christianity, and "religious people" when they obviously mean Christians.

I hate how people say "Christian" when they really mean "Follower of the Doctrine of Paul" instead of actually following the teachings of Christ. I can understand them not wanting to admit that they are following a debased, offbrand, version of Christ's teachings, but it is still a bit dishonest. It is very hard to find a genuine Christian amongst all the Paul-Doctrine followers, increasingly so these days.

We're talking about God here. According to the Bible, he cares deeply about all sorts of petty shit, like what fiber blends you wear, what you eat, whether or not men have a foreskin, etc. etc.

As a Jew who has seen Judaism discussed on this board...I'm okay with everyone sticking to talking Christianity if they want to.

First:
Religion and Culture is not the same thing, religion is a part of most cultures, but not all cultures have religion. Just like all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs.

Second:
We talk quite a bit about culture without talking about religion, as for a lot of us religion has next to nothing to do with our culture.

Third and also semi serious reply:

Most of the time we either talk about, Christianity* Atheism (or agnostics) or sometimes Islam. But as Christianity is the religion with most followers on earth there is no wonder that we talk most about it, as statistically there will mainly be Christians on this board, or at least people brought up Christian. Personally I also feel it is wrong to discuss a religion or cultures with people who do not belong to it, as you might get quite a lot of misinformation that way...

*and all its different branches

Fourth:
You belong to a faith that tells you to go forth and make others believe in your stuff, so talking about it can't exactly be a sin now can it? at least if you don't actually say something bad about it

I used to study Religion in Uni did you guys know that? This is like one of my fav subjects...

If God wanted his followers to be more open-minded and interested in other religions, he probably shouldn't have allowed so many mentions of unbelievers going to hell in the Bible or laid down so many laws indicating that people of other religions are evil/inferior.
