Is it just me or do Pixar humans look like they're made of fondant?

I would just like to see more diverse animation styles in general. I'm tired of the same old CGI styles. There are so many beautiful and interesting art styles out there and I want to enjoy them all and be surprised by new ones.

Another reason I'm not a fan of Pixar and Disney's (and anyone else's) CGI. It just looks silly. To be fair, I think Tangled and Frozen looked a little better, but I think the cartoon movies were so much more beautiful.

I mostly agree, though I've liked some CGI character designs a lot.

Different studios have different styles, and unfortunately CGI is not going away. Those styles often don't work to their benefit, but still.
Slightly related, I actually watched The Iron Giant for the first time last night and it looks so great for something almost twenty years old.

Agreed! And most audiences agree, too. Overall box office earnings are up, but not as much as the increase in ticket prices. Less people are going to see the CGI movies than went to see the hand drawn animated movies. To be fair, ticket sales for movies are down in general in most markets (US, Canada, Europe, Japan, China, Australia amongst others), but Disney movies sell less tickets than the average Hollywood movie.

You should watch Japanese animation then, most of it it's beautiful 2D.

I disagree? I don't don't like some styles that some companies prefer to use like Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs and some pixar stuff but otherwise I think the companies that put a lot of effort into it get pieces that are just as beautiful as hand animated work. Especially since the process is pretty much the same right up until the difference in actually animating it.

I agree. I would have been one of those people massively obsessed with Frozen, but the animation put me off a bit.

Mte. These designs can all go burn.

I don't hate CGI, but I do prefer 2D animation by a wide margin.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with CGI, but I do feel like it's overused. Also, while the characters may look more realistic, they just don't seem as interesting or charismatic to me in 2D. I feel like the 2D characters tend to be more animated in their expressions and movements.

I think CGI animation can be very well done, but I believe it's a bit of a challenge for animators to find that good balance between realistic and cartoony without falling into uncanny valley territory. The way characters were designed in Ratatouille, for example. I really liked those. That being said, I do wish that 2D feature-length animation wouldn't die out in America because that will always be my first love. Thankfully Japan and Europe will probably keep it alive.

On the terribad side of CGI things, there's always Delgo. :D

Plenty of video games have amazing CGI cutscenes featuring all kinds of characters, but for some reason the TV/movie animation industry keeps circlejerking over horrifying designs :(

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-04-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer CGI that's a lot more stylistic. Like 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs', though that could be because the character designers flat out admitted they were heavily influenced by the Muppets in terms of the aesthetic. Or 'Clone Wars', which most people don't even realize is also a flat-out homage on the designer's part, except it's one for the Gerry Anderson/'Thunderbirds' marionette shows of the 60's (which they have stated several times when the show first aired). Even Green Lantern: TAS is basically 'Bruce Timm style, but in 3D'. Nickelodeon's TMNT cartoon has a definite, angular/stylized feel to it that has a lot of energy. And even some of Pixar's stuff looks great if it doesn't revolve around people, which is why I love the 'Monsters' movies and 'WALL-E' as much as I do. *That's* the type of CGI I like.

It's the overly homogenous stuff (i.e. the whole Rise of the Brave Frozen Tangled Dragons crap) that I'm so bored with. I can give 'Wreck-it-Ralph' a pass, since it had varying styles b/c of the video game aesthetic; but everything else is just so boring-looking, imho. =T

(Well... I can give 'Rise of the Guardians' a fair pass, since most of the characters do have unique appearances. It's only Jack that's the homogenous*CGI-looking person, but I digress)

Here's a clue for you. It's almost all CGI, even the 2D animation these days.

Yeah, I sort of agree. I like a lot of CGI stuff but human characters still look odd and plastic to me every time. And I think there are ways to make the characters look interesting and diverse but the studios aren't willing to take a risk and try them. I feel like 2D films had a lot more risk-taking in them, animation-wise, that I'm not feeling as much in CGI films. I'd like to see someone really try and stretch the limits of what the medium can do a little more instead of giving all the characters the same Disney Princess or Standard Dreamworks Character face.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Disney would have pioneered CGI had he been alive.

Suck it up and take off your nostalgia glasses.

I've liked CGI since I was a tyke watching ReBoot and Beast Wars, but the current and very particular brand of bobble-headed, giant-eyed stylism that dominates the design of human characters really turns me off. And it's sad because they have the technology to do yards of hair and piles of snow and delicate ice sculptures in astonishing detail, but the humanoids keep coming out off-putting and lazy, and I don't understand why.
