Episodes everyone else hates but which you love

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone have a show that has an episode that is really unpopular and the vast majority of the people you know despise it, but which you really like?

Tell us what episode(s), what reasons everyone else gives for hating these episodes, and why you actually like them.

Hound of Baskerville in BBC Sherlock.

In polls it always comes out bottom. I think it's more favoured in fandom than with the general public, though. I've met quite a few on tumblr who love it.

That's such an odd episode for me. I don't dislike it at all, but twice I watched it and my attention wandered so much both times it was hard for me to follow and enjoy. I really /want/ to like it, but it seems set against me, lol.

I adored that one too, it ranks as one of my favorites consistently.

Bottom of the list for me is Blind Banker for sure, though.

I considered Hound the best episode of season 2 by far.

The Great Divide in A:TLA. It's filler, the metaphor is incredibly heavy-handed, and the people are frustrating. But I love animation and I love seeing the way the different styles are used to enhance the Rashomon effect. The music is used to great comedic effect too. And I like seeing Aang start trying to come to terms with his Avatar duties.

Heeey, I was going to mention that The Great Divide. I don't love it, but I never hated it. I was surprised how much people seemed to hate it. I always felt bad for the poor canyon guide, though.

I still love the "I made it all up! Suckers!" ending. It was way better than if he'd actually known them.

I really, really, really like "Starsky vs. Hutch". Looking at it from a distance, I can see why so many people hate it -- the two friends have an excruciatingly painful and nasty fight, Hutch does something incredibly cruel, both their motives are baffling to the point of feeling like crucial scenes were edited out of the episode, Kira is both annoying and a terrible human being, and the resolution is glossed-over and incongruous.

These are the exact same reasons why I like it so much. From a meta perspective, it's one of the most fascinating, complex episodes ever to speculate about and analyze, and I'm not even a slasher.

Thhhhhhiiiiiiisss. It did kinda suck in some ways, but...so fascinating! Plus, it came near the end of season 4 -- stuff had been brewing all season long and they were due for a blowout. And it made the ending of the show all the more satisfying because they had to go through a rough patch to get to it.

"Arena", from Star Trek TOS. Everyone else is laughing at the guy in the glittery Godzilla suit and Shatner's throwing rocks at him and stuff, but the actual plot of the episode made several very good points about prejudice and assumptions of right and wrong, when it's not always so clear.

I'm actually pretty sure most devoted fans like that episode. It's just infamous among non-fans because of the ridiculous costume. I'd bet most of the people who laugh at it haven't even watched it or don't remember what it was about, they just remember the fight.

Everyone always hated the Beverly Crusher-centric episodes of Star Trek: TNG, but they were always among my favorites. I still consider Remember Me to be in my top ten.

Crusher's conversation with the computer in Remember Me taught me more about philosophy and logic and subjective reality than 8 years of secondary and post-secondary school combined, tbh.

People hate that? It's one of my favourites.

I think most people hated Beverly Crusher episodes simply because they hated/disliked Crusher. I'll admit she isn't my favorite but I enjoyed some of her episodes. Remember Me is a really good episode. It really stuck in my mind and was one of the few I remembered years after I stopped watching TNG (just now getting back into it).

A lot of people hate 'Small Potatoes' from X-Files because Eddie Van Blundht was a rapist and all but I think it's funny as hell. Come on, mistaken identities every fucking where.

Wait what? I'm pretty sure Small Potatoes is a HUGE fan favorite. Or at least it was back in the '90s.

The last two episodes of NGE.

I was bored for most of the series, actually, but those two kept my interest.

I can never figure out if most fans like or dislike "The Empath" from Star Trek TOS, but in any case I love it despite the paper-thin plot because of Kirk and Spock and McCoy playing a baseball inning of I Get To Sacrifice Myself First, Suckers! and McCoy totally cheating.

Avatar Day from A:tLA. I think it tends to get a lot of flack for being a light, goofy episode in what is otherwise a fairly tightly plotted season, but I love it in all its goofiness. The celebration of the day the Avatar was not boiled in oil never fails to amuse me.

Supernatural's Roadkill.

I remember thinking it was one of the better made episodes of the show, it almost gave me hope for a future in which there could be more well directed eps (the hope didn't last for long after that).

Then I went on the internet and EVERYONE HATED IT.

BBC Sherlock: "Scandal in Belgravia". Seems to be universally hated for various reasons, but I enjoy the hell out of it, especially since it ties in to "The Great Game", which is another fave. And yes, I know all the reasons people say they hate it and no one should like it. I don't bloody care.

Nothing specific but I actually like filler episodes, to a point. 9 time out of 10 fillers are where the really good humour comes from. I need some form of comedy in everything I watch or read (anything from exceedingly dry to in-your-face funny) or I tend to lose interest. If the fillers go nuts like with Naruto? Yeah, no, that's the line for me.
