Celebrities

Have you ever met a celebrity and found that either they are a total douchebag or so nice you can't believe who they portray on TV/in movies?

Armin Shimmerman is awesome and incredibly nice. I'm always seeing stuff at the ensemble theatre he's a part of, and chatted with him when he's in the audience or after-show discussions. His Richard III was fantastic.

Armin is totally nice. I was stuck with him in an elevator at Dragon*con once. He totally is the nicest guy ever.

I love it when the actors are so nice to their fans. Granted, any celebrities I've met are much smaller and only well known in their genre but it's still a nice thing to see.

I have not but my dad has.

He worked on The Patriot as an extra and said Mel Gibson was a douche (this may be one of the reasons he absconded with several props).

He helped build one of the sets for Leatherheads and said George Clooney was a pretty cool guy.

He met Jesse James and said he was an asshole that is full of himself.

That's nice to hear about George Clooney and I'm not surprised about Mel Gibson. I love hearing stories about celebrities and who is nice about it.

I mean, I briefly met Stephen Colbert a few years ago when he was "running" for President, he stopped by my college campus and I got to shake his hand. I also met Neil Gaiman at one of his book signings and he was pretty chill.

Does fanmail count? I once wrote an awkward letter to one of the screenwriters of Murder Rooms and man, he was SO nice about it. He totally wrote about his feelings and plans and other stuff.

He also wrote a series of novels that is pretty much in my top 5 favourites of all times. I wish I could meet him.

On the old ExIsle BBS there were a good number of writers/creators who were all very nice, starting with Kieth RA DiCandido who was a peach.

Re: Celebrities

I was watching the writer's commentary to "Frequency" once, and it featured Toby and Noah Emmerich. At one point, they were joking about how few people would listen to the commentary, and Toby told "All three people listening" to send him an email (to which Noah replied, I'll give you a dollar for everybody who does).

Well, more than a decade after the movie was released, I sent Toby Emmerich an email saying I had watched the commentary, it was one of my favorite movies, and Noah owed him a buck. He actually replied and was very nice.

This story was much better in my head. Sorry.

Patrick Stewart is just an unnecessarily nice and pleasant fellow, really sweet guy. However, he's also one of those actors who's able to play smarter than he is. Not that he's stupid IRL, but... he's no Jean-Luc Picard, you know? That was a weird discontinuity for me.

The only celebrity I've ever met was Warwick Davis at GenCon UK many years ago and I basically didn't say much and was horrendously shy, which was embarrassing more than anything. He however came across as perfectly nice if a little baffled at my inability to say more than 'hello' and 'thank you' after he signed a card for me.

Oh and I don't know if artists count but I met Todd Lockwood, who is one of my favourite fantasy artists, at GenCon UK the following year. He was also nice and friendly and we had a little chat about art and stuff.

I've met a lot of people at conventions, and they were all lovely. Except for Paul Darrow, who was so in character, he made me nervous. I didn't want to even speak to him, despite how much I loved Blake's 7.

John Schneider is one of the sweetest men in the world.

I used to hang out with an 80's teen star. He was adorable. He never knew how to deal with the adulation, though. It embarrassed him more than anything. We had a waitress refuse to give us our bill because she was trying to get someone to come to the restaurant with a camera to get a photo of him with her. I had to convince my friend to just sign an autograph so we could leave. Another time, we were out to dinner with a new college-age friend, and she had to show how she could stuff her whole fist in her mouth. Uh, okay, that was embarrassing for both of us.

While it not a matter of his not being nice/mean one of the biggest differences I saw of actor/character was Stargate's Christopher Judge. Teal'c is/was a stiff, formal very serious warrior who rarely cracked a smile while Chris Judge was a funny, energetic guy who was rarely without a smile. While I never thought Chris was a bad actor it wasn't until I saw him at a con and saw how different he was from his character that I realized just how good he is.

Gene Hackman was entertaining and loved being the center of attention. Denzel Washington was a $*^%#@ prick and needed a trip to the woodshed for a few lessons on deportment. Ethan Hawke was incredibly kind and engaging. John DeLancie is still trying to remember where he knows me from (he doesn't), but it was amusing to watch the wheels in his head turn.

I didn't actually meet him - he was on the same plane in the row behind me, travelling with a small child, I didn't want to be intrusive so I didn't say anything. But he was incredibly courteous to everyone who recognized him and said something, both in the plane and at the airport.

I've seen a couple celebs at cons who were just awesome. Amanda Tapping was so charming and funny and appealing. For several months, I had a crush on Joe Flanigan. I'm not sure if that's what you mean though.

Re: Celebrities

I saw John de Lancie at a fairly small-ish convention shortly after the end of TNG. He was a giant asshole and acted like all the fans were completely beneath him. Imagine my rage when I found out he was a card-carrying brony but he couldn't possibly stand in a room of (actually fairly tame considering) Trekkies.

On the flipside, I got to speak very briefly to Sam Raimi during SeaQuest's heyday when he was randomly a guest in what amounted to the snack bar of a NASA event day. I felt so sorry for him because whoever decided he should be a guest didn't really pay attention to the purpose of the day (anniversary of the moon landing) and then they stuck him on a stage with 8 people around. He kept trying to get people in the audience to ask questions but there wasn't any, so he just went off stage and signed autographs. He was very sweet. I still have the poster he signed even though this was prooobably 20 years ago.

My sister met the band 30 Seconds to Mars when we went to a show on her birthday (our big sister managed to arrange a face-to-face meeting somehow) and she said they were really nice. When she told them it was her...eh...17th, I think, one of them told her, "What? What are you doing out so late?" It was cute.

Andy Robinson is a wonderful guy. He wrote a novel about Garak and I (among other people) wrote a review of it for his fan club magazine. Awhile later I was in an elevator with him at a con, and he grasped my hand in both of his, looked down at me, and said, "I really, really liked your review of my book."

I got a chance to ask Robert Hewitt Wolfe about a DS9 episode he'd written that featured Garak -- some of the speeches sounded almost like metered verse, so I asked him if he'd done that deliberately. His answer was no, but that he now wished he had -- and the answer was written in verse. :)

It wasn't me, but a good friend met Joshua Jackson (Fringe) while they were filming at his workplace, once upon a time. He was apparently kinda hyper, bouncy, really friendly, and very chatty ("So we're kinda taking up all your space at work, huh? Getting in the way a little bit? :P") He's so stoic in Fringe, it was cute to hear how... well, cute he is.
