Yeah, I wish there was more fanwork for him, too. He really is one of the most interesting characters in the movie.
(And he's so damn awesome. Seeing Samuel L. Jackson with an Eyepatch of Power walking around with a damn bazooka and shooting down a plane with it was one of the highlights of the movie for me. XD)

I think yes part of it might be that he's black. Part of it might also be that Samuel L Jackson is over 60 years old. It's like people being outraged that Saito didn't get as much fic in Inception fandom - of course not, he may be damn attractive but Ken Watanabe is still like 50+ years old. After a certain age the fandom love and fic drops sharply in general. Even Agent Coulson has become more of a meme than genuine character love and I rarely find anybody saying he's actually hot.

What I want is young, attractive POC heroes in a movie sometime.

If this makes you go "RACIST MOTHERFUCKERS", I can't help but wonder how you'd feel if the original Fury had been black -- and then turned white for the movies. Of course the opposite doesn't bother you, but you know what? There wasn't a whole lot of fanworks for this character even back then. And don't try telling me that the movies had be out first, because hey, David Hasselhoff.

Also, why can't you make some art/fic/GIF/whatever with him? Make the fandom ~*~see the light~*~ and all that.

Honestly OP I hadn't noticed a lack; I don't have numbers to back it up, but I've definitely seen quite a few things with Nick in them, fanart-wise. With those little gif set things that go around, I feel like people may be hindered by the lack of eyepatch in other, earlier Samuel L. Jackson roles, but I've even seen him in some of those, so.

So...yeah it may indeed just be the fans you're following?

Is it possible that it's partly because of how confusing his canon is, what with marrying it with the movies? Red Widow is a red-headed, former Russian spy in both. Captain America and Iron Man are pretty much the same. But Fury was a white guy who lead the Howling Commandos in WWII.

It might be in part because they don't want to start wank between the movies and the comics over which one they prefer.

It might also be because he's not part of the team so much as pulling the strings of the team. If all the team and other characters had a sleepover, Fury would be the one telling them to go to bed because they have to save the world in the morning.

I just don't think it's necessarily because they're racist.

Really? We must be in different parts of the fandom, because I've seen a bunch of things with Fury in them. One of my fave gif sets is the one where Hawkeye's spying on everyone and Fury looks right at him.

First I hate whenever someone pulls the I don't like someone of So-an-So race so I must be racist.

My Nick Fury problem? I hate SLJ, I don't like his acting at all. There are plenty of black actors I do like, he is just not one of them.

I find a lot of others don't like him, so most likely that's the reason for lack of stuff. Doesn't mean they are racist, it just means they don't like him.

White people can not like black actors and not be racist.

TL;DR: Sick of the racists crap.

I draw fan-gagstrips and I can only speak for myself but the reason why I do little fanart for Fury is because it's HARD to come up with gag strips for him. He is the ultimate straight man. With the other Avengers and Loki, the jokes write themselves. Hawkeye? Make a joke how he acts like a bird or how he is the tagalong of the group. Stark? A nice quip where he dumbfounds everyone or is being a complete charming bastard. Loki? Abuse the heck out of him. Thor? Annoying brother and dumb blonde jokes.

Banner? Now Banner is much like Fury. You can't really do much with him other than make him the butt of Stark's flirting jokes. Which is why most people do Hulk *SMASH* jokes instead.

But Fury. He's too straight lace and cool. There's not much to work with there. The only things I've seen people do are crossover jokes. Mostly Fury as a Jedi or Fury yelling, "I'm tired of these motherfuckin' (blank) in my motherfuckin' (blank)." But, again, not much on Fury, himself.

Even the one strip I drew of him still had him not being the butt of the joke but being the straight man.



If you can give me something to work with, I'd be more than happy to draw it.

Meanwhile Loki, Thor and Stark? So much material to work with!

Huh. My dash has been surprisingly balanced. I mean, majority of the fanwork is just of the Avengers and/or Loki, but I've seen a fair amount (more than I expected) of Nick Fury and Coulson. Maria Hill (=that brown-haired female agent), on the other hand, seems to be forgotten most of the time.

But yeah, POC erasure is definitely a problem overall in fandom, so your concern is very valid.

Color me surprised. From what I've seen, he's pretty well represented. The only place I don't see much Fury is at the kink meme, and I think that's largely because a) he's hard to pair with anyone, and b) he's older, and most fans don't want to read about older people(especially doing kinky things).
I do see a lot of him in gen stuff, though!

slj sucks. he's like the worst actor alive. (although he occasionally gets lucky with a good director.)

and nick fury is one of the most cliche and annoying characters i've ever seen. wow look at me i'm so cool with my eye patch and predictable retorts. you must think i'm cool. aren't i a cool a mother fucker? that's right, i'm cool.

also, you're ridiculous for thinking that just because someone doesn't like a character of color, they're racist. i'm so tired of this 'you don't like a female character you're a misogynist! you don't like a black character you're a racist!' buuuuuullshit.

he's a good subject for fanart, though. :) i'd be surprised if at least the male portion of fandom isn't taking advantage of that.

Seriously? The large majority of art and graphics either only includes the six Avengers (so it makes sense that Fury isn't there, just like Coulson or Loki or whoever isn't there), or they include all of the characters and then they usually also feature Coulson, Fury, Loki and so on. The only disparity I've seen is that there seem to be no shippy gifs at all of Fury with anyone (am I the only one who ships Fury/Coulson?), while Coulson gets his share of shippy gifs because Clint/Coulson is so popular.

If he were in a role similar to the avenger characters, then I could assume there was racism involved. I notice that character in that "head director guy" type of role tend to get ignored more than other characters.

And I've seen him in a lot of fanart, but I'm not actively looking for it so I can't really tell.

Well, I'm glad you know better than to accuse your fandom friends of being racist because they aren't as enamored of your favorite character as you are. I know how frustrating it is to have a character you like be largely fandom-ignored, but it happens, more often for secondary characters, which Nick Fury definitely is.

Actually the real surprise is how popular Coulson turned out. But I think that's because his school-boy crush on Captain America was fine ship fodder. Fury was resolutely professional with everyone, he never really had a vulnerable, hair-down moment, which made him come off a bit cold and unapproachable.

"Fucking disgusted"? Really? I see why it'd be annoying and I'm sure in some cases it is a racial thing, but jfc, this is a bit of an overreaction. I'd say it's more likely because he's not paired romantically as much as the others are (and that's because he has fewer feelings-y moments than the others. Though he has a few!).

And there's totally SOME fanart out there.
