I totally disagree. I think the show's fascinating the way it is.

I think the fact that it's not a pure procedural like L&O is a big part of its appeal.

ah, the old serial vs procedural debate. i'm gonna have to disagree, too. if i wanted to watch law & order, i'd watch law & order. god knows there's enough episodes of it.

Bad troll secret...right?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean surely. The relationship between the leads and the "pretentious" dream sequences are the whole point of Hannibal.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So... you want it to be just another average, ordinary procedural, like everything else on TV. Okay, most everything else on TV.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You say that like it's weird to think that maybe one of the earlier, most famous books about profiling and procedure that also spawned several well-known movies focused on profiling and procedure would also lead to a TV series that focused on profiling and procedure. Now, I totally understand wanting to do something different with the series, but let's not act like it's the only rational choice for people to expect.

Yeah, I think that's why this series hasn't really stuck for me. I tried watching a few episodes and it was just... eh. I was hoping for something more like Manhunter or even Red Dragon that focused more on the forensics and procedural aspects. Hannibal is more like a Will/Hannibal soap opera, with artsy shots of naked dead women. The latter really creeps me out, too. Not because of the dead bodies, but because they're filmed in such a way that it's like they expect the audience to ooh and ahh over how bee-YOO-ti-ful mutilated dead ladies are.

I don't disagree, but to be fair to Fuller, that's something he has at least thought about and tries to be gender neutral on. He's gone on record as saying that he wants to avoid "stabby rapey" murders because he thinks the gender politics are gross, and some of the more visually striking corpse displays have been either male (the human cello, the man with the tree growing from his chest) or both male and female (the angels, the totem pole, the eye). But for sure opening the show with those fetishistic images of women impaled on stag horns did it no favors.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
did you just randomly select only episodes with female victims or something? There are plenty of beautifully filmed scenes with dead men if you are interested.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
You only watched the pilot, didn't you? That's one of the few with beautiful young dead women and it put me off for a while, too. But then I heard good things and I went back, and wow. *Everyone* is filmed beautifully, male or female, old or young, and there's very little sexualised violence of any kind. Much better than the procedurals are doing, TBH.

LOL! Yeah, just take out the whole dramatic core of it and ditch any stylized elements, it'll be way better and like ten minutes long. Forget all the obsession and manipulation and various psychological issues while you're at it and just make them two totally normal guys who happen to work together. Hell, just dump the whole crime thing and make this show: http://renlybaratheon.tumblr.com/post/64193158755/au-meme-hannibal-as-a-happy-show-requested-by

*shrugs* So go watch Law & Order. It's not like there isn't plenty of straight-up procedural crime drama out there for you to enjoy.

I actually wouldn't mind some more procedural elements, but that's because Team Sassy Science is the shit. I want more of them always. (What do you mean "Takiawase happened", I have no idea what you're talking about.)

Otherwise, yeah, part of the point is that it's not just another L&O. Particularly in this season, as we're moving beyond the vaguely procedural trappings and becoming predominantly a horror/psychological thriller. Honestly, Hannibal was built from the ground up as a show about Will and Hannibal's relationship. If you changed that, I don't think the show would be even remotely recognizable.

(i don't even care if this is a fake secret, i always want to talk about this show)

Yes, we should absolutely cut out the title character out of his own programme.

Fair enough, though, just watch something that doesn't feature the shenanigans of a cannibal psychologist.

Disagreed!

[personal profile] thistlechaser 2014-04-30 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
We're the opposite, OP. I said about this week's episode that I wish they'd lose all the crime stuff and have the whole hour be just close ups on their face as the two of them verbally spar.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I like their relationship and the artsyness of the show in general, but 100% agree on all the boring fucking dream sequences and nonsensical shit. I like that the show is pretty but idk, I also like a show that doesn't make me question what's really happening to characters every 5 minutes.

Given how nightmarish the rest of the show is it's odd to me that anyone would single out the parts where Will is actually asleep.
