Amen. Most of my ships are incest, but surprisingly I do not in fact want to have sex with my brother (nor with my father, despite having some parent/child ships). Then again the anti-incest brigade is generally one of the most obnoxious, judgemental bunch of assholes in fandom.

I get what you're saying but disagree. I understand it's fiction. Fantasy. Not based in reality at all. But I still cannot ever separate the idea of sibling relationships from at least slightly connected to thinking of my own siblings. And the idea of incest just wigs me out.

That's not to say that I go around bashing incest shippers. I just leave them alone to do their thing, like I hope people would do for me and my kinks and ships.

It amuses me too. I understand that even the thought of fictional incest creeps a lot of people out (which is perfectly fine!), but when people go on about how 'you must not have siblings' I laugh. Thankfully I don't see much of that around anymore.

I have three major incest ships (two brother/sister, one father/son), and shockingly I have a completely normal family life with no desire whatsoever to bang any of them!

Like, I get it if even fictional incest squicks you, that's fine and no one's judging, it's when you get up on that soapbox and start harumphing down the length of your nose at people that it gets annoying. Assuming that people that like incest ships must have fucked up relationships with their families is like assuming that people that like horror movies would like seeing real people getting slashed up.

Same tbh. Okay sure, I don't have siblings, so I don't understand The True Reality Of What Having Siblings Is Like. I have other family members and don't want to fuck them, though? Yet some of my favorite ships? Sam/Dean, Kili/Fili & Thor/Loki.

My shipping preferences have absolutely nothing to do with my real life.

I agree with you. I have only one incest ship (come on, Wizards Of Waverly Place was basically incestship bait ._.), so it's not like a ... kink for me or anything, but it doesn't really feel different to shipping other ships?
I don't have a brother, but I do have a sister and I never had sleepless nights there. They're fictional characters. There is lots of stuff you can do with/to fictional characters without never ever wanting these things in real life.

I do understand when others could never ship an incest ship and find it creepy and that's fine.

What does confuse me, as someone coming from a country where it's technically allowed to marry your cousin is, that people often react to shipping fictional cousins the same way as they would react to siblings for example and I don't get that at all?
Everyone acts like a potential child would 100% have terrible birth defects etc.
(No, I never wanted to marry my cousin, it's just not that weird/gross of a concept to me. *shrugs*)

Yeah, those arguments irritate me too. Like other people here have said, sometimes there is a stark divide between fiction and reality. I've also shipped pairings with shitloads of sadistic and unhealthy elements. But it doesn't mean I would support a relationship like that in real life.

Especially amusing to me because most of the incest shippers I've known personally have had siblings and ship what they ship because people are different and the relationships between those particular fictional siblings didn't ping as sibling relationships to them.

Same. I have a younger brother, and I ship some incest stuff. No connection in my mind. Plus, there aren't a lot of fictional sibling relationships that ping me as genuine, specifically when it comes to adults. I don't know if it's an issue with the writing or the acting (if it's a show/movie) or what, but most of the time I just see two people who happen to share a surname.

I don't think incest shipping is gross, but that's because I never get past thinking that it's mostly a sign of desperation. Like, really? You couldn't have enjoyed the canon without a ship? You were so desperate to ship a slash/femslash/het pairing that you went with incest?

I know that's not true for most fans of incest pairings, but it really seems that way sometimes when the most popular pairings for a fandom are incest and also happen to be the only slash/femslash fish in the sea. (Looking at you, Frozen and early season Supernatural fandoms.)

I don't go "you've never had siblings/must be weird". Because that's just not the right tactic, and it ignores the actual root of the problem with incest shippers.

It's "you don't understand how incest is fundamentally founded in abuse and you grossly romanticize it, which makes me want to punch you in the throat because incest is not like that, will never be like that, and you should be ashamed of dressing it up and getting off to it." or "you've never been in an incestuous 'relationship' or you'd never fucking fantasize/glamorize it."

But i am 1000% okay with kink shaming people who fantasize about a romantic version of the abuse I suffered, and nobody likes hearing about that.

I solve the problem by not associating with anybody who writes/ships incest, or older male/younger male pedo grooming bullshit as "normative" or "desirable" or "romantic". I cut those shitfuckers out of my life like the cancers they are and not a /goddamn thing of value is lost./
