(Word) doesn't exist! (rant)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sick of being told Misophonia doesn't exist and that it's just called 'being annoyed'. I know what having annoyances feels like. I have pet peeves. My reaction to certain sounds/visual cues is completely different. I don't feel like mentally I'm being attacked when I'm annoyed. I don't start to get angry or disgusted or start to sweat when I'm annoyed. I don't start to panic or feel an intense violent rage when I am annoyed. Please stop telling me I can just 'get over it'. I wish I could. I wish I didn't feel like ripping the skin off of my face whenever someone eats too loudly or smacks on gum. It's not *fun*, it's not *magical*

So, FS, is there anything about you that other people claim isn't real or is all in your head?

Ugh I hear that Misophonia thing, and its horrible that people deny it exists. I know someone who has it and I can say Misophonia is NOT the same as just being annoyed.

Misandry. It may not exist in the sense of an institutionalised problem, but it definitely is a word which can be used to describe a certain mindset of an individual person or a group of people with a shared mindset.

Those discussions always leave me so frustrated. I agree with you and I will always fight for a person's right to complain even if there are people facing worse problems. But there really are also people who refuse to understand that misogyny is institutionalized in many ways that misandry is not.

Re: (Word) doesn't exist! (rant)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nope.

Re: (Word) doesn't exist! (rant)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but it's not even close to being the widespread problem that people who point out "misandry" make it out to be. How often do men feel like they are the victims of misandry in their daily lives? Also, most gender-specific problems that men face actually come from misogyny. For example, people are so dismissive of things like male rape, because it's "something that happens to women", and society deems it is shameful for a man to be like a woman.

Absolutely.

And frankly, I've found the ones who deny the word is a word (?) are the ones most likely to say all men should die or other immature absurdities.

I think we need another word, which doesn't share roots or form with "misogyny". Because I've definitely known people who hate men in general; one of them was a man, too, which was a mind-blowing experience for young me.

I hate how dismissive people are of the things that are "all in my head". My mental illnesses are very physical. Sometimes I don't know if my depression or fibromyalgia is causing the most fatigue and the list of physical reactions that my anxiety causes is staggering. But sure, it's all in my head. :(

EVERYONE GETS DEPRESSION. EVERYONE

You "woke up on the wrong side of the bed"? You have depression!

You're a bit down? You have depression!

Any time you have a period of negative feelings, sadness, etc, your have depression!

The difference is some people need medication because they have a biological problem that makes them depressed more often than most people. That's clinical depression.

Normal depression does not need medication, but it still happens.

(My mother had this argument with my father, who happens to react badly to the suggestion he has any sort of psychiatric condition - especially after having one wife (Mum) with bipolar, and another with schizophrenia.)

I can't stand it when people loudly suck back their snot, and hard. It's such a gross goddamn sound that it makes me sick to my stomach and inspires such horrible rage I otherwise would not feel.

Granted, if it only happens once, I can deal with it. But. those. people. who. do it. over. and over. jesus. fucking. god. and then GET OFFENDED when I tell them it's rude.

(Yes, yes, I know, SINUS PROBLEMS YOU INSENSITIVE JERK and sucking back snot is way better for you than blowing it into a tissue. That doesn't mean you can't still use a tissue to wipe it.)

The only other thing that sets me off is when people start violently arguing out of the blue. But I guess that's more of a trigger from a shitty childhood. I don't freak out, but my heart does start to race.

Is misophonia at all related to "sensory defensiveness"? (which is an older term I think.)

Mine is more typical...I have depression, and I get really pissed when I hear people say that it's not a real disorder or that antidepressants are worthless/the easy way out/a "happy pill"/shouldn't be used/whatever.

Bisexuality doesn't exist!
Yay that's a fun one.

Also sexism. God, it pisses me off when people try to pretend like sexism is totally over and finished and done with (even though there's still a wage gap and a host of other problems.) It must be all in my head!

And dyscalculia. Oh my god, if the teachers had known I had that when I was a kid, I might be able to do basic math as an adult. But there's no resources. No visibility. No nothing. Makes me wonder how many others like me there are, who have no idea how to work out percentages or do other basic financial things.

Preach it, my fellow misophonia sufferer. I have actual panic attacks when I hear licking and smacking noises, sometimes even to the point of self-harm.

Chronic fatigue. I have been to countless doctors, spent probably thousands of dollars, and have had multiple tests run to try to figure out what is wrong with me. And guess what? They haven't been able to find a cause. We've found some issues and fixed those and the problem still persists.

No, I don't need to get more sleep. I can sleep for 12+ hours and STILL be fatigued. I don't need to eat better; I eat extremely healthy and I take multiple vitamin supplements. I try to walk at least a mile every day when I feel up to it. Physically, my body is in excellent shape aside from the fatigue. Yes, I've seen a psychiatrist - I see one twice a year for my OCD and he has told me that I'm most assuredly not depressed. (I'm a cheerful and upbeat person aside from this)

Like you, I really wish it were something I could just 'get over' so I could have a much more productive life. I'm currently job-hunting and it sucks to be constantly worried if I'll even be able to work a full-time job if I do get one.

Apparently including my spellcheck.
