you can rant to me anytime, op, and you can be sure i'll rant back. let's talk about how some aspects of this movie are truly mediocre but it gets a pass because it's genre and "not supposed to be perfect", whatever that means.

Rant to us, yo. Hell, I saw (most of) this movie for the first time this weekend and tbh all I really cared about were the cute scientists. So I totally feel you.

There are many, many people like you. There's a bunch of Newt/Hermann fic out there, and in my experience it's pretty solid.

I don't really get what the big deal was, either. It had cool special effects and concepts and a few good actors, but the rest of it was pretty meh and full of clichés.

I thought that was the point, though? That it was supposed to have all these mecha and giant monsters clichés as sort of like a nod to the classics?

Well, I disagree with you (and everyone in the thread apparently) but I still care about it, so there's definitely some purpose to ranting about it.

(fantastic movie though, absolutely fantastic. maybe it was overrated, I don't know how it was represented to you, but it was absolutely a fantastic movie)

I thoroughly enjoyed this film but am far from obsessed with it the way some folks are. (Not that there's anything wrong with being super into it, I just thought it was fun. And a pretty damn good popcorn flick, but if you don't like it that's alright. Not the end of the world. *shrugs*)

I missed the fandom explosion too, but wish I hadn't because of all the crossovers. I see Pacific Rim AU's now and then (and will always at least check them out because I have a weakness, okay?) but know I probably missed a ton of art.

I saw this movie late as well. I feel like I've already been ranted at about it by everyone else for a year, so I have no personal need to do it myself.

The fanart is amazing though. Not surprisingly for a movie that's all about the visuals. Most of the art I see is Mako, but here's some others:

It's funny, I liked the film a lot, but I had very little interest in participating in the fic/fanart part of the fandom.

It's not supposed to high art at all. Not even in or the fandom for it, but it was one of the best movie experiences I've had. There are some movies that are just meant to be seen in a theater with a packed audience and Pacific Rim is one.

I'll grant that the hype this movie got was a bit over the top, I thoroughly enjoyed it myself and thought it was good fun but considering how crazy fandom went over it I can certainly imagine that some people would have had high expectations for it and would have been disappointed as a result.

Yeah, I thought the movie was horrendously awful. I got that it was supposed to be a dumb action flick and I like dumb action flicks just fine. But I found it incredibly boring and wasn't impressed by the visuals beyond the first 15 minutes or so. So it failed as a dumb action flick too. By the time I got 75% of the way through it I just started fast-forwarding to get to the end.

If Citizen Kane can be an artistic masterpiece and yet boring as hell, then Pacific Rim can have a thousand things that are terrible about it, yet be awesome as fuck.

My roommate watched it twice. She thought it was terrible the first time. The second, she sat there after it was over, looked at me, and said "I think I misjudged. It's kind of awesome".

I love the movie dearly. Giant robot + giant monster + boat = smack down OT3.

I can see how people would think it was bad, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. So have fun hating it. (I think I'm glad you missed the fandom explosion, though, because it sounds a bit like you are upset you couldn't ruin people's fun.)

Well, it's coming to me in the mail tomorrow from Netflix, and I'll be seeing it for the first time so....we can talk about it here in the general comments thread, if you like!

I wish the fandom had never exploded because I think it's overrated? I mean usually I'm fine with letting other people have their fun but it's an annoyingly super-defensive fandom and I'm ready to stop seeing people who are sort of my friends reblog all the posts that are like "LOL if you're not wet about PR we can't be friends."

I don't know how the movie could be considered overrated, half the talk I ever see about it is how much it sucks, so it's not exactly an unpopular opinion.

Maybe you should be happy you missed the chance to whinge about it with people and you can focus on something you actually enjoy, it seems like a better use of your time.
