tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My neighbor's cat was an absolute sweetheart, friendly to everyone, and always wanting to love on people. She also always wanted to go into people's apartments, even when they weren't her own. The neighbors refused to keep her inside, because "she's just too sad indoors", even after getting several complaints about the cat wandering into people's apartments.

You'd think after getting the complaints, they'd keep her inside, or keep a better eye on her, but no, they let her keep wandering around.

Now she's missing, and there's a strong suspicion that she was poisoned by one of the people that was complaining, and I am super pissed.

I'm pissed off at the people who poisoned her- take her to a shelter if you absolutely have to teach the people a lesson about not letting their cat roam around! But I'm also so goddamn pissed at the cat's owners- you got several complaints (according to you!) about your cat, and her habit of wandering around, and what did you do? Nothing. How irresponsible do you have to be?

And the cat paid the price.

Fuck everything.

hold on, the cat goes missing and the first thing you jump to is cat poisoners

what

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That does seem a bit odd. What with cars, other animals, and cats beign cats.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing the OP has other reasons to think that, so elaboration, please?

And if not, yeah, you might want to consider that it WAS actually taken to a shelter, hopefully.. Or simply taken in by another neighbor, and is being cared for.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's

1. The cat goes missing

2. Signs are put up in every apartment's laundry, all are still up except for the one in the apartment complex where all the complaints were coming from

3. The cat is not found at any of the nearby shelters or vet's offices

4. The garbage area smelled like a dead animal

OF COURSE these are all from the people who's cat it was, but even if the cat is alive somewhere, why did they let their cat just roam around, even after people complained? This isn't a house, this was an apartment complex by a major road. Look after your goddamn pets.

But I hope you're right, and I'm/they're overreacting (also OP)

Re: tw: animal death

You are obviously not a cat owner. I can say that, as paranoid as it sounds, cat poisoning is actually something that happens and something that you have to consider if your cat goes missing.

To support this, I know one person who found their cat poisoned by a huge amount of rat poison. And one other person who admitted their mother poisoned their neighbour's cat (we are not friends).

Like, it's not super likely, but it unfortunately is not out of the realm of possibility for outdoor cats :(

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry for your neighbor's cat, but... poisoned? I could see where you'd get that if the cat came home with a mysterious illness or acting like something she ate disagreed with her, but if she's missing there's a lot of possibilities besides poisoning.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, I'm hopefully overreacting, but she's missing, and however it happened, I'm super pissed at everything right now.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Or someone caught her and took her to the pound or animal shelter, or decided to keep her as their house cat. Or she just decided to make a run for it.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
She hasn't been found at any of the local shelters.

I'm hoping she just made a run for it, or was taken in.

That's sort of sad, but, you really have no way of knowing what happened. If the cat was just let loose, chances are it just ran under a car or something and there was no malice involved.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope so.

The owners still shouldn't have let the cat run around outside, though, I feel like, and that's what upsets me more than the other things.

I am assuming that you "know" who did it, or at least you have a person in mind who you assume did something to the cat.

Don't take out your frustrations on this person. Don't accuse them. Don't. Unless you have photos of them harming the cat... Stay out of it. There's no evidence that they did anything to the cat. In fact, the only person who could hold any blame right now is the owner of the cat, for not keeping it safe. At the same time, don't fucking accuse the owner for not keeping the cat safe. They know they fucked up, and they've lost their pet. Stay out of it.

I have an idea, but I won't. I'm not going to do anything except talk about it anonymously online, I know it's not my place.

They know they fucked up

Questionable. Unfortunately people who let their cats wander freely tend to think that their pets have a right to do so. It's more likely that there will soon be a new cat roaming the neighbors' apartments.

Off topic rant: I generally get pissed off at people who let their cats roam outside, because they kill so many small animals! They're like serial killers, seriously. Keep your cats indoors, people.

But that doesn't mean your neighbor's cat should have been killed for being an outside cat, of course. I hope she turns up safe and they keep her inside after this.

Re: tw: animal death

This is interesting to me because my family was just bemoaning the fact that the neighborhood "killer-cat" isn't around anymore. It was a cat in the neighborhood that roamed free in everyone's backyards and it was absolutely great pest control, getting rid of unwanted squirrels and chipmunks, etc. that were doing damage to our house. Now they're all back. We can't have a cat because of allergies but we don't mind having one roaming around our area for the exact reason you wouldn't want them too. /different strokes.

But that's what cats do? Domesticated or not they hunt, it's dumb to get mad about something that's engrained in their DNA.

Why shouldn't cats kill small animals? I get the concern if we're talking, like, endangered species, but rodents, snakes, birds? That's pest control in most cases.

I figure you're in the US, right? Here in the UK, I don't know anyone who has a cat and keeps it inside. Probably folks with pedigree cats? There's a persian around the corner, though, and it's allowed outside.

I see where you're coming from, but whenever someone says 'keep your cat inside', I'm like 'huh?' just because it's not something we do over here. Likely because you guys have wolves and coyotes and over here, the only thing a cat has to really worry about is getting squashed by the bin lorry.

Man, I sure hope not... like everyone else has said, there's no way of knowing what happened to the cat, but maybe she just ran off. Maybe someone took her in or whatever; it can happen. It would be terribly sad if she got killed on the road, but hopefully that didn't happen.

Maybe she'll even come back? How long has she been gone? Sometimes animals get lost but eventually make their way back home. Guess it isn't likely, but until you know for sure it's a nice thought.

The owner should have kept a closer eye on her though, especially if people had complained about her running loose.

I assume from "apartments" that this cat was doing its wandering somewhere in the city, which is just...so stupid. Outdoor cats have shorter lifespans than indoor cats for a reason, and the city is even worse than the suburbs where there's less traffic and fewer psychopaths (though still a fair number). There's people in the city I live in who let their cats wander, and they all go missing eventually. Leash train your fucking cat if you want it to enjoy the outside.

Re: tw: animal death

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I see "Lost Cat" signs in my neighborhood all the time and I'm guessing that the vast majority of them never get found. I've personally seen foxes and coyotes here, and I've seen dead cats on the side of the road too. I mean hell, I frequently put out rat poison in my fenced-in yard because otherwise it's not uncommon to get rats that come to check out the garbage cans. If someone's cat comes into my yard and eats a poisoned rat, that's not my problem.

I will never understand why people think it's okay to just let their cats roam loose. You wouldn't let your dog do it, so why do people think it's somehow okay for a cat?
