I wake up to see a part of tumblr in disbelief at something called Dashcon - 17k was raised in an hour? What's this?

Apparently it's a con for Tumblr or something.

A con basically about tumblr for tumblr and funded by tumblrites.

If it survives it might turn into something but right now I'm thinking everybody will complain afterwards cause it won't be what each of them expected. They need a bit more emphasis on the geek part though (and hey, Night Vale is going so it's a start) because "depression (help) programming" sounds like a lousy idea for a con.

Dashcon is a convention for tumblr users, held for the first time this weekend. Yesterday the organizers made an official post saying they need 17k by this morning or else all dashcon attendees get kicked out of the hotel. Even tho they paid for their rooms. Because the hotel is evil and this is totally not a scam.

This is like that one brony organized con all over again. Just cause you can make a webpage doesn't mean your organized enough to pull a con off.

Holy shit. They're already pre-registering for next year?

I'm kind of tired about people bitching about how "a lot of people donated 17k to it but not to people who could have REALLY used it" . It's understandable to laugh at how bad it went, but getting so pissed that 500 people didn't donate 50$ all to one person when they got nothing out of it...

It's a huge mess. The folks behind Welcome to Night Vale were supposed to perform at it and shelled out money for airfare and everything only to be told by the organizers when they got there that they wouldn't be reimbursed for travel costs or paid for their performance so, unsurprisingly, they left. That's just incredibly unprofessional of the con organizers and I wouldn't blame the WTNV creators for being pissed. Jeffrey Cranor was pretty gracious about it though on his tumblr (although you can tell he's displeased by the situation). According to Noelle 'Gingerhaze' Stevenson, Doug Jones allegedly walked out of the con.

She didn't say why, and I haven't seen anything in the Dashcon tag, but I'd imagine it'd probably be for the same reason the WTNV people left. If this is true, good. I've had a good acquaintance with Dougie for about 10 years now (ever since the days of the 1st Hellboy movie), and it kills me that the guy is sometimes just too darn nice to say 'No'. Hopefully, this will make him -and his agent- a little more cautious about committing to 1st year conventions in the future.

That said, I think Dashcon officially trumps Las Pegasus Unicon in terms of Horrible Con Train Wrecks, imho.

they're acting as if they're righteous heroes on a noble crusade who are sticking it to The Man, and not a bunch of losers who blew 17k on a scam

This is all such a beautiful, beautiful trainwreck. I just pity the people who spent the money (65$ or something? + travel and lodging expenses) for it hoping for a fun weekend...
