I think there's a lot of people who want/ed to be somewhere, somewhen, or something else. It's the whole basis of self-inserts in fanfiction, for starters; in a way, it's probably the basis for all the fantasy ever written.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to be something greater than this world will allow you to be, provided you don't go like me and live only in the worlds that don't exist.

I also think that kind of dreaming is actually a LOT more common than you think; it's really just the same thing as dreaming of being discovered as the next supermodel, or winning the lottery, or getting that promotion to the job you've always wanted, or finding the perfect guy. It's really just a matter of scale. Some of us like to dream big. =D

Then again, I could be talking total bollocks. After all, this is just an opinion.

(Me, I still want to be a Sailor Scout or a Digidestined. Possibly a Digidestined Sailor Scout. How sad is that at 23? XD)

23. Okay. I'm going to do my best to be calm and non-wanky, but no promises.

I don't understand the Mello/Matt thing. For all we know, Near might've contacted Roger and asked for back-up for Mello's sake, and Matt was who he sent. You see Matt for all of ten panels and he and Mello barely interact. They have a working relationship with very little personality in it - the few casual remarks are all made by Matt and completely ignored by Mello. Sure, Mello shows regret at Matt's death, but that's because Mello's a good guy at his core. He doesn't want good people to die.

On the flipside, everything he does is motivated by Near. They're irrevocably connected. He hates him, he challenges him, he tells him he'll wait for him, he puts his life at risk (note that, in the manga's official translation, what motivates him to move is Halle telling him Near intends to have his own name written; they don't mention any one else) and ultimately dies for him - it evolves towards love. Even if you don't want to interpret their relationship as moving in that direction, you can't ignore the bond between them. If Mello really wanted Near dead, he could've just let him go after Light. Obviously, the ease with which Near was planning on beating Light bothered Mello. He could've let the plan go on. Best case scenario, Near dies, and Mello could swoop in and use the outcome of that encounter as irrefutable proof that Light Yagami is Kira. Instead, he chooses to risk his life to give Near a better shot at winning. If that's not love in some form, I don't know what is.

Two last notes - I love Near. He's my favorite character in the series, and it's not because he's "cute". There are plenty of other reasons to like him. Finally, you're exactly right that Death Note is not about who boinks who. A big chunk of it, however, is the interactions between the amazing personalities that make up the main cast. Exploring relationships is perfectly in tune with the series and not necessarily about sex or eye candy. Don't be so shallow.

It's not love. I don't think it's even a form of love. Mello risked his life, not for Near, but for the bigger picture-- to catch Kira, to avenge L's death.

AAAAH I UNDERSTAND. I'm 18 and in college now, and I still wish all the time that I could just step into this magical and so-much-bigger world where animals and stars and planets talked and teenagers really could save the universe. I must have read the Oath a thousand times when I was younger and still had this stupid, desperate home that it could really happen. Embarrassing but true. :<

(And if I had the book with me, I'd probably read the Oath again.)
