But...rich people don't help the economy, the middle class spending does. Rich people horde money or put it into investments/things overseas. Trickle down economics do not work. I don't think Democrats are perfect by any stretch, but I'd say it's Republicans that want people to stay poor. Doesn't help that with the skyrocketing of living costs, they want wages to stay stagnate.

The Republicans want you to get rich, then vote for them.

Rich people create jobs for the middle class.

Jobs that people can't support themselves with because it doesn't provide a living wage.

Re: unpopular opinions thread

Rich people create jobs for the middle class.

They really, really don't. Not if they have any choice in the matter, anyway.

Re: unpopular opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I know you're trolling but I thought I'd expand on this anyway:

I think we can see, quite clearly at this point, that the interests of the rich are in no way aligned with anything that creates jobs for the middle class (or good jobs for the working class, for that matter). The preferred strategies of the rich are, first, to automate as much as possible, so that functions can be performed with as few actual workers as possible, and second, for what jobs you do need to create, to pay as little as possible and to hold down the condition of the working and middle classes so that they're forced to accept long hours, no benefits, and low pay. Because, obviously, both of those things allow them to cut costs to the bone. Certainly some jobs are created by the rich, but it's the opposite of the aim of their economic choices and the political policies they support.

DA

As someone from a rich family, I see this all the time... but I don't think it's fair to blanket blame "the rich" for it. Rich people aren't this asshole monolith that is out to mercilessly squeeze "the poor" for every penny they have.

But corporations are another story. They're definitely are trying to squeeze every penny out of everyone, including the layers of rich people below the top; it's not the people themselves, it's how corporations are structured and how they work. It seems inhuman and unfeeling because it is; corporations aren't people. Structure-wise, there are so many levels of people- rich and middle class both- that have so many levels above them pressuring them to "increase efficiency" and "raise the profit margin" who are forced to do so in order to keep their jobs, that when it gets down to the bottom, the huge demands of everyone above you results in jobs without living wages, no benefits, and awful horrible stuff.

Reality is the opposite of the trickle-down economy.

Calling it a class war, or accusing rich people purposely holding the middle class down, doesn't sound accurate to me. The national manager pressures the regional manager who pressures the area manager who pressures the store manager who pressures the store employees and like 10 other steps on the way, and someone like the regional manager never even notices the details of what is happening on the street-level until it's brought to their attention, because his job isn't to take care of that, it's to make sure the big numbers coming in from the whole area. Their job is to deal with the summary, not the details.

What can we do to fix the system? I don't know. But I do believe that's where the problem is, not with people who are or want to be the regional manager of GenericMart.

And I'm a Democrat, fyi.

Re: unpopular opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that those structures don't come from nowhere. They're constructed by the people who run the corporations, under the influence of the shareholders, the owners, the board, etc. These days, they're often intentionally constructed to have those effects, in order to maximize efficiency and profit margins and therefore shareholder value for those who are in control.

And the people who are the shareholders and the owners are, usually, the rich, the people who control the capital of society. The structures are set up by the rich and they benefit the rich. There's a reason these things have come into existence in the way that they have. There's no destiny that forced them to exist this way. The logic of their structure follows from the interests of the rich.

Re: unpopular opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
If that were true, the middle class wouldn't be dying like it is now. The economy wouldn't have exploded right as Bush was leaving office, either. I remember a woman anchor on fox laughing about how she'd lose 'so much weight' if she were poor, completely out of touch with the reality of food costs, and that unhealthy food is the cheapest, and that healthy food is the most expensive. The gap between the rich and the poor is increasing at an alarming rate, and I'm not foolish enough to think Republics give two shits about anyone who isn't white, wealthy, straight, and Christian.

Re: unpopular opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Also, Republics delude people into thinking they can become rich, when it is almost impossible. Unless you're born into money or are one of the few people to invent something like Facebook or tumblr, you just have little to no chance of gaining wealth. Not with the abysmal wages the so cold 'rich job creators' are willing to provide.

Oh, Walmart, some of the most richest companies in America, is quickly losing profits because foodstamps were cut. If that's not irony, I don't know what is.

That is some hardcore self-defeating bull right there. I know a couple of rich people. Not one of them was born rich. They worked for it.

Democrats delude people into thinking they have no power over their lives and there is nothing they can do to change their situations and the only they have is to sit around and wait for the welfare check.

Re: unpopular opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Welfare is not this amazing paycheck that means you don't have to ever work, ya know. Most of the people I know on welfare bust their asses at deadend jobs, and need the help because 600-800 dollars a month is not a livable wage. Not everyone can become a successful business owner or go to a good school to get a good degree. Hell, a lot of people with degrees can't find work and are highly qualified. A lot of rich people shipped their jobs overseas, so they could pay even less to their workers. There is a crisis right now and rich 'job creators' aren't actually helping.

It's nice that you have some rich friends, but to say 'all you need is hard work to get rich!' when a lot of poor people bust their asses daily for nothing is just insulting.

Do you actually know any Democrats? Like, have you met one? Because I have. I know personally several party officers in my state of residence, I've gone to rallies, I've worked phones.

The Democrats' major mechanism for getting out the vote isn't welfare offices. It's labor unions. It's working people.

You're repeating a caricature.

And if you heard what they say about voters like you! Well, I'll tell you. I met a young man once, working on a lost-cause campaign in a fire-engine-red district where Democrats would be happy to get 33% of the vote.

He said, people don't realize they're chickens voting for Col. Sanders.

A bit harsh, but not any more inaccurate than what you're saying.

You always seem so sincere, but whenever you make political posts I can help but wonder if you're trolling. I've never met another purported adult, liberal or conservative or otherwise, that views the political divide with such childlike simplicity.

Is the long game? Are you recycling brainless #conservativeandproud memes from the internet to see if anyone will bite, then cackling at the reaction?

like, either you're deep cover as fuck or you're trolling while also actually being a Republican in which case yr puppetmaster act is a little ridiculous
