Vaugely based on #10

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-07-27 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some movies/tv shows/games/etc that you dislike for weird/petty (to you) reasons? It can be because of something personal or something having to do with the media.

I hate The Rocky Horror Picture show because of the creepy "tricking someone into having sex scene". Traumatized my poor mind as a child.

I also hate Mary Poppins for an even sillier reason. When I was a kid, I wanted to watch some special on mammoths that was coming on Discovery Channel. But my older sister wanted to watch Mary Poppins and she being older, got to control the TV. She didn't even watch it all and I missed my special. D:< That movie has been tainted for me since.

What about you all?

I can never watch the doctor who episode Last of the Timelords ever again.
Not because of the Tinkerbell Jesus Doctor malarkey, I don't actually mind that. It's because the face inside the toclafane skeeved me the fuck out. One of the only things in the show that scares me actually.

Oh yeah, it was pretty gross looking. I was always creeped out by Cassandra (the skin face lady). Blech.

Extreme hype aversion is probably the most petty reason not to like a thing. So I dislike a lot of things just because they've been crammed down my throat by fandom, be it before a movie's release or after, when I don't even need to be in the fandom to hear about its ship wars, tropes, most popular fics, etc.

I mean, I've never even flipped past Teen Wolf on the TV, fuck if I even know what channel it's on, but there is no way I will ever watch it. Same for Sherlock, Dr. Who, Avengers movies, Supernatural, Firefly, etc.

I get that was about some shows. Right now it is Hannibal, Game of Thrones, and Sleepy Hollow. I think it depends on whether or not I learn about the show before I am bombarded with it.

On a similar vein, I hate spoilers. So, if something is over hyped and I know too much about it before seeing it just from exposure, I'm out.

A friends of mine is really into "Major Crimes" but I have zero interest in that show. There's too many dudes/too few women for my taste. Another big reason is that I watched about two episodes of "The Closer" (its predecessor) and the shaky cam made me physically sick. Also in some scenes they seem to have an aversion to letting a shot last more than 5 seconds, drives me nuts.

My dad loves chess, so we owned the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, and I hated it. When I was younger, I thought I just hated it because the main character was so perfect, but more recently I realized it wasn't that he was generically perfect, he was what I thought my dad's ideal child must be and I assumed when my dad watched the movie, he wished I were like that kid instead of myself.

And for a movie that I actually do hate because the kids are too perfect, see The Sound of Music.

This is going to make me sound stupid, but I hate the ending of Tangled because Flynn's narrating, saying that Rapunzel proposed to him and I was like, "Huh, that's a cute quirk in a kids' movie- way to go" and then they turned it around and I was like, "I see. Because a woman asking a guy to marry her is unacceptable and undesired? Okay." It's petty but I found it annoying anyway.

Haha, I think that's a pretty great reason to dislike Mary Poppins.

I dislike 'Superman Returns' because Bryan Singer and James Marsden left 'X-Men' to do it, and therefore I blame it for 'X-Men 3' being such a travesty.

This is illogical, I know.

No exactly hate- but I'm pretty convinced the universe is trying to prevent me from ever watching Star Wars.

Literally every time I have had a chance to see it in the past, events conspired so I wouldn't be able to. After the 5th time I just decided I'd never try watching it. So I won't.

A little after Stargate Atlantis was canceled Stargate Universe was announced. The same directors and writers worked on it, but it was given the green light because SGA was apparently too expensive to continue and the newer series would be cheaper to make. It was also described as being darker, and seemed to have a younger cast, and all those factors combined made me so opposed to the idea of the show that I never watched it. I was mad bitter, yo.

Plus, I just knew if I did watch and enjoy it Syfy would cancel anyway, so why bother?

I didn't watch SPN because all my friends liked it, but whenever I would watch something before to actually understand what the hell my friends were talking about, they'd lose interest as soon as I caught up with the show - so I didn't want to see it. Then I heard Supernatural began to suck, so there's that too.

True Blood.

Anna Paquin's casting makes me cringe every time. They killed her hair by bleaching it and she just does not fit the description of the books.

A Knight's Tale and the one movie where the Princess is cursed to be obedient? (Can't remember the name.) I know on an intellectual level they are supposed to be satires, however, the movies didn't quite go out of their way enough I guess to bring this home. I don't know they just make me cringe. And I couldn't get past the "I love Rock'n'Roll" in a Knight's Tale.

Avatar & Seth MacFarlane

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Avatar. I hate it. Never seen it though. I hate it because it's the movie that made 3D in movies popular. I don't like 3D movies because I wear glasses. They never stay perfectly on my face over my glasses and it's just uncomfortable to wear. Half the time I'm preoccupied with keeping the stupid things on my face and not what's on the screen.

I also don't like anything with Seth MacFarlane. I never found Family Guy funny. I don't find him funny. So, I avoid his work like the plague.

You can't pay me to read any Marvel that isn't X-Men or Garth Ennis' run on Punisher. I don't care how good it might be, I don't care which writers whose DC work I liked wrote it, I'm not going to fucking read it. Especially if Spiderman's in it. It started off just being "I prefer DC's writing and stories and characters" -- you know, a fair reason -- and turned into "fuck you assholes why is this shit popular?"

(for the record I hate most of the movies too that aren't Iron Man 1, Captain America or X-Men First Class.)

I can't watch Arnold movies without thinking about a post where someone cited a reporter who Arnold tried to take cruising for "plo chops." The reporter had to ask for clarification multiple times until he clued in that he was mispronouncing "blow jobs."

Similarly, I'm not certain I'm going to see an Emmerich movie again without thinking of this review of Anonymous: http://chezapocalypse.com/episodes/shakespeare-month-anonymous/
