It's "Omoide No Marnie", a Studio Ghibli film that was just released. I haven't had a chance to see it yet (and I'm sorta surprised that the OP is upset about this; I have yet to see much of a fandom), but the book that it's based on is quite lovely!

From what I remember of the subbing I saw they definitely said love? The only problem is that from posts on the subject I've seen people are seeing it out of cultural context so.

Also I definitely remember having some pretty persistent crushes when I was sort of young, so I don't think age matters? People don't want them to bang, just have crushes on eachother. Shrugs.

It's a weird line for me.

1. It's fine to ship it. Ship whatever you want, see things however you want. Ship whatever you want however you want.

2. It's when they claim that in the context of the canon, it's gay, it's meant to be like that, and it's a fact, everyone else is wrong, etc that's the problem.

I'm mainly irritated when people base their shipping on stuff like trailers or promo images without actually knowing anything about the characters in question.

Just "oh look, these two characters are holding hands/smiling at each other/whatever, THEY'RE TOTALLY A SHIP." At least wait until you actually see the movie to see how they interact!

Personally I have no problem with people shipping it -- trailer looks pretty shippy. OTOH, already sick of people claiming Ghibli is 'queerbaiting.' Yeah, because I'm sure Studio Ghibli is totally on purpose making the relationship look romantic in the trailers because it'll give the movie's box office that big ol' lesbian boost. Everyone knows if there's one thing Japan loves and approves of, it's lesbian relationships between the leads in a children's movie because they are so accepting like that.

Well, people ship m/f kids all the time and no one thinks that's inappropriate -- they assume these kids' romances don't involve sex. Why should it be any different with two girls, or two boys, than it is with a boy and a girl? Homosexuality =/= all about sex.

hey, and I'm sick of people complaining that a friendship is "tainted" by slashers, or that slashers ignore friendships, or that slashers must have no friends, or that something about a romantic relationship between two characters must erase any and all friendship they had before and can continue to have! and especially in the context of femslash which is wholly underrepresented in fandom as it is.

seriously tired of people complaining that friendship doesn't get enough attention in fanfic when media is inundated with same sex friendships and virtually no canon gay relationships. if you wanna complain because it's (apparently as upthread says) incest, fine– but complaining that others read them as a gay couple and that totally ~ruins~ their friendship is gross.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. All the crushes I had on women/other girls as a child were completely inappropriate for children.
