Your Age Vs. How Old You Look

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What age do people guess you are, and how close is it to your real age?

I'm 25, am often mistaken for 16. This has its pros and cons. On the one hand, there are few things more satisfying than revealing that you are older and smarter than a bunch of condescending teenagers who have been talking to you. That moment when you start schooling them is just delicious.

On the other hand, I get talked down to constantly, patronized, expected to behave well the way a child is supposed to (no, I will not stop fucking swearing, and no I will not give you my spot in line. There's probably three years of age difference between us. Also? I'm old enough to realizes that I have no obligation to be nice to anyone. I definitely wasn't confident with that idea in my teens). And finally, I get so creeped out when I'm hit on by a random guy on the street, because how can he not be thinking jailbait. (It's always way older pervs, too.)

No choice of clothing or amount of makeup can age me, I've tried. What about you?

I'm twenty and I'd say people think I'm about that age or a year or two younger. I've been told I have a younger looking face, but I'm fairly tall (5'8") so I think that makes up for it some.

I'm almost 30, and I'm routinely mistaken for someone who's in her late teens. Usually doesn't cause me any problems, lately. Generally people just act surprised when they learn my real age (for example, I recently got carded at the liquor store, and the clerk did a double take when she saw my birthdate. "Woe, thought you were A LOT younger than that!").

I'm 37, got carded last year at a con when I tried to attend a 16+ panel. Have gotten many gasps and double-takes from people who card me.

I'm cool with that, since I don't drink or smoke, and looking way younger than I am means that I can still cosplay really young characters. Occasionally I feel a little sketchy for being my age and cosplaying like a 6-year-old girl or something, though.

I think it depends a lot on what I wear and other circumstances. A nice shirt and a little mascara will get me over 20, which is all I really want (23), but wearing a t-shirt and out with my mom, I'm easily 16.

I'm the same as you.

I've been wondering lately if people in their 20s get mistaken for teenagers so much because the people mistaking us don't know any real teenagers, only TV teenagers, who are usually played by people in their 20s (like Secret 6). We don't really look like teenagers, we look like people who play them on TV.

39, still get gasps and "no you're not!" though idk what age they think I am. it might be mid-20's by now, since I usually get the reaction from college guys who think I'm in their pool. used to be mistaken for a teenager when I was mid-20's.

it's worse when I cosplay, but I'm actively wearing makeup for that so I'm not sure how to count it.

People are not obliged to be doormats to each other. That doesn't mean there's no obligation to behave like a civilized human being in public and show some reasonable consideration for others. Sounds like your teenage self had the idea better than you do now.

It sort of depends. Until about 23 I always got estimated (much) older, which was especially sort of creepy as I attracted a lot of older guys as a teen. In my mid-twenties it sort of evened out, and in my late twenties people started estimating me younger. I'm not sure if it's my face or my lifestyle though: I'm not married, have no kids, don't own a house - I don't really have much of the things "adults" have. I'm in my early 30's now, but generally get mistaken for mid to late twenties, about 4-6 years younger. It can really depend, though. Someone estimated me to be 24 a few months ago, but when I feel ill or tired I get estimated more closely to my age. I think I look a bit shit lately, but maybe that's just my skin being a bit dried out from the sun.

In any case, I do not try looking older, on the contrary. I like being perceived as younger because I don't relate much to most people my age. Except from the occasional patronizing from a person who's being motherly/fatherly while they're not even a decade older, it's okay. I specifically dress, act, and do make-up "younger", though not sure that makes any difference really.

I honestly have no idea. I think for most of my life people thought I was older because I'm tall and I have "mature" facial features (concave cheeks, straight as opposed to uptilited nose, etc.). But ever since I hit my late 20s and up that's changed. Most of my same-aged peers are getting grey or thinning hair, crow's feet and deep forehead lines, and gaining a ton of weight. None of that has happened to me (yet) and as a result people still think I'm mid-late 20s at over 30. I had to take a freshman course recently, and my lab partner and TA said they thought I was just a senior taking the course late, not a (lol) PhD student.

Of course, what really seems to age my same-aged peers is kids, which is completely understandable (sleepless nights, extreme body changes, etc.) and should I ever have them I suspect it'll be similarly hard.

Thirty. Anywhere between about 17 and mid-twenties I guess. Depending on what I'm wearing that day. Though I still get ID'd for anything you have to be over eighteen to buy. XD

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 27, but always mistaken for a teenager. It wasn't until I hit 25 that people stopped thinking I was a middle school student though. I guess that's what happens when you stop growing at age 12.

Personally, I think the cons outweigh the pros, but what are you gonna do? I do like how people are more likely to help me because they think I'm a kid. That's definitely a plus. I think the worst is when friends and relatives around the same age get treated more like an adult than you do because they look older than you.

I went to an anniversary party for my uncle and aunt last year that had assigned seating. If I hadn't said something before about my seating arrangement, I would have been placed at the table with my teenage and younger cousins instead of the table with my same age cousins. It can get pretty embarrassing when your own family doesn't remember you're older than you look.

I'm 36 and usually take for 25, at the most. Long hair and acne doesn't really do anything to make me look my age.

Pretty much the age I am is what people guess, sometimes older... But when I was 15 people tended to think I was 18.

Also once I had to show ID to a woman to prove that I wasn't 30, I don't get carded often, except when buying Alcohol, but that happens to mostly everyone who looks like they are under 30 as you are supposed to show your ID if you are under 25.

If I go abroad on the other hand it drastically changes and people usually think I am at least 30, heck even on my first trip to The UK when I was 18 and a half a month old my friend and I accidentally ended up in a 22/25 or something bar without getting carded, and we had to convince most people we meet that we were 18 not in our mid 20s.
I'm 24.

I'm the same as you and it is incredibly frustrating. It was amazing this past weekend when I was in LA and didn't get carded at the bar once. I look older if I put a lot of effort into it but it's not worth it on a daily basis, so I've given up.

People were guessing me older when I was younger and are sometimes guessing me younger now that I'm older. But they are usually not that far off.

I'm terrible at guessing age, though. Always think people are older than they are.

People tend to think I look around 16 and are shocked when I mention my age. It's hilarious. They're over a decade off.

I love my makeup (which tbh, I think only makes me look younger), but maybe my style is 'young'? (Last week I passed on a skirt because I felt it looked like something a teen would wear. It was cute but I thought, "If I wear this people are only going to be even more confused about my age.")

Supposedly I have young features. It isn't terrible, but in some cases it can be a little grating and/or off-putting. Mostly it's beneficial though, because I feel like people are nicer to me because of it.

I'm 30 and people tend to peg my age as being anywhere between 16-20 regardless of what I'm wearing or if I have makeup on. I'm honestly fine with it; it means I can rock a lot of fashions that would probably look out of place on someone who looked like they were in their 30s.

It does get a little awkward when college kids try to hit on me, though.

I'm 25 and I look around that/maybe a little older. I can convincingly still use my undergraduate college ID. But I also haven't been carded for ordering alcohol in over 3 years.

I wear glasses and look "serious" so I've always skewed a little older, ie, being cast as the high school principal rather than a HS student when my school did Footloose when I was 17. Obviously when the entire cast is 14-18 kids are playing adults, but I was cast within my age group only once in eight shows.
