Except sickle-cell is something people of all races can be born with, not just black people. It disproportionately affects people with African ancestry, but that's about it.

That wasn't an obvious description. There's a difference between the narrative actually pointing it out, and a character that's already racist and confrontational trying to get a rise out of another.

Yes. Kansas, USA.

I'm "default white" and I get asked quite a lot actually. A lot also depends on your facial structure, accent and language, he way you carry yourself, the way you dress etc.

Now I agree that in a work of fiction that very likely indicated the author wanted to say something about heritage.

But to the reader, that experience does not necessarily need to convey "he's mixed race".

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-08-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
When I feel I need to. Sometimes that's every day, but if I'm going to be mostly inside for a few days I probably won't wash it (unless it feels incredibly greasy or itchy or something).

I use Organix too, btw! The coconut milk shampoo and conditioner; love the smell. (It makes me hungry though, haha, it's that good.)

I think that translators might be biased OR not knowledable in slurs OR not wanting to translate them in order to be politically correct.

I've read the Polish version and I remember Shadow's skin tone description somewhere in the end when he had been talking with Mr. Wednesday. In the beginning he only had been given black hair.

Though, no excuses for English version (neither the Polish one I've read as it's mentioned he's black).

Looks like a moth to me, maybe start there? You see a lot of moth caterpillars in New England. Gypsy moths and whatnot.

In many ways, that is exactly the problem right there. People do have a tendency of reading characters as white until otherwise stated - and because people often have lackadaisical reading or just tend to miss details, if it's not pointed out a lot, then even when it is explicitly stated people will still read a character as white, which goes back to the original problem of popular media having a "white = default" mentality.

Most people don't get their dream jobs straight out of school, but that doesn't mean that you can't send in your application again later and get some experience in the meantime.

Re: How do you define passive aggressive?

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-08-29 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Imo, it's being agressive passively... looking to get a reaction without being actively confrontational or openly provoking.
Like telling their roommate to clean and then slowly picking up stuff sighing loudly.
Or saying that someone looks tired in a tone of fake symphathy - in effect telling that this someone looks not at all great.
Telling someone embarassing childhood stories with a benighn look because they are pissed about something the other person had done.

So sabotaging your work would be an actively harmfull thing and not a passive agressive thing. But maybe definitions vary. *shrugs*

Well, it could be just that, a Tent caterpillar. But it is definitely a moth caterpillar.

In some stupid bullshit pseudo rape scene that treated her more like a wild animal than a human.

Re: How do you define passive aggressive?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-08-29 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It does, but just to make sure I'm interpreting it right: because they've been passive-aggressively criticized a lot (by someone who was doing so maliciously), they assume all criticism or just a lot of criticism is the same thing, even when it's not?

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Every day, both washing and conditioning. My hair is really curly and if I don't condition it it's a mess of frizz.

This is all just reminding me of how far I was into Coraline before I realized that the Other Mother literally had buttons for eyes, and I don't think that ambiguity was intended.

+1. It sucks that you didn't get the job, but don't give up hope? Now might not work, but you can always keep sending your application in while getting experience elsewhere.

Re: College

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-29 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
That really depends.

Where o you live? How rich are you/your family? Are you going to plummet yourself in debt? How will job opportunities differ with a third language?

But hey, if you enjoy studying, and it won't cripple you financially I'd say go for it.

I'm covering it and all my bills so I'm not putting it on anyone. I just feel like there's more I want to learn before I finish.

Re: How do you define passive aggressive?

It's making snide comments about a problem instead of addressing it directly. I'll give you an example from my life.

A towel in a shared bathroom of my house had fallen off the hook and no one had picked it up. I hadn't even noticed that it had fallen. Instead of picking it up herself or asking the rest of us (there are 4 of us) to be more aware or something, she kept asking, "Does that towel need to be thrown away? It's on the floor and no one has picked it up."

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-08-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Every 2-3 days usually. Sometimes it's every 3-4, like you. And like you, if I do it more often than that my scalp becomes an itchy nightmare and my hair puffs up like a static bush.

I shower more often than that, though, especially if I've been exercising. When my hair is long I'll use a band or a cap. Or just be careful when it's short.

They do exist... but those pejoratives generally do not get applied to them simply because they "look white".

Well, guess I learned something new today.

Dammit OP, why couldn't you let me live in ignorance? :(
