Re: OK, I actually opened the book

Seriously, that scene is at its heart a more sophisticated and original version of all those scenes in which the POV character looks in a mirror so that the reader knows what s/he looks like.

Heh, this is like when I found out the Beatles didn't do their own voices in Yellow Submarine!

It was, however, his idea, I believe, and he had a big hand in it.

I think there's a middle ground between 'everything in the book is about the main character's race' and 'the author avoids explicitly mentioning the main character's race in any way and then gets pissy when people don't read it the way he wanted them to.'

I just don't get why Gaiman is so cutesy about it.

This is such a sweet secret.

Re: Are you a tea/coffee/chocolate snob?

[personal profile] spacebabie 2014-08-29 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of a soda snob, as in Pibb is inferior to Dr Pepper, and a bit of a cheese snob. No Kraft singles for my sandwiches. I get mine cute at the deli and I will never eat the stuff that comes out of a spray can.

OP

Like I said above, there are some straight romances I like, I just feel like maybe I would get more out of them if I could identify with them? Or maybe not.

It does get really old, though, that it seems like there has to be a (straight) romance thrown into EVERYTHING these days.

Re: Just finished watching The Celluloid Closet

AYRT

Yeah, I was watching it because I'm in a class called Before Stonewall right now, about LGBT art and literature and culture before the Stonewall riots in 1969. We stopped about halfways through the movie, so I didn't watch the rest until today.

The cultural context thing is definitely interesting, and definitely something to keep in mind. The snippet from the 1927 movie "Wings" was fascinating, because it's doesn't so much read as queer to me than just... feminine, or rather, what our culture has deemed to be feminine, i.e., expressions of emotion, especially physically.

(Though I will say I don't think that argument holds as much water when you've got the screenwriters and actors saying, "Yeah, that was totally gay, we did that to get around the censors.")

Well, there is a lot of the same bullshit, but... I guess I'm trying to say it's bullshit in different ways? Or at least the scope of the documentary would probably change, if it was remade today, and I'd be interested to see those changes and why they were made.

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't like Garnier either. It's too greasy for my taste.

It's another acronym for LGBT+ people that's more inclusive but not as hard to remember as LGBTQQUUIAsomethingsomethingwhatever. Plus it makes a word, and that's the best part of any acronym.

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Every day. My hair is really fine, so if I don't wash and condition it every day, it'll get super greasy.

Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Reframing the situation like you do is probably not a bad idea, as long as you then flip back to remembering they're a straight couple with the same feelings as a gay couple. The fact you realize this is an error in your thinking and you're trying to correct it is a good thing. There are straight people who should try the same exercise with gay couple.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
As with other movies of the time, effeminate character actors were used for comic relief, particularly Eric Blore and Franklin Pangborne.

Any tech people on here?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I have searched around online but can't seem to find a solution (maybe I am using the wrong keywords?).

My internet internet drops randomly. And the only way to make my computer reconnect is to restart it. I don't think it is the modem because my cell phone and Kindle still have a connection.

but I have no idea what to look at to see what the problem is on my computer. I am on WIFI, Windows 7, and have an ATT router.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
He snogged the Persian slave boy though. He was obviously bisexual in the film.

NAYRT

You don't necessarily have to put all your characters in relationships, though. So there could be straight supporting characters who are single, or whose partners are offscreen most of the time. Depending on their role in the story it might not matter to the plot if they're gay or straight, so you could just not get into it. (Does this even make sense?)

I feel the exact same way -- there's gonna be some big radiator repair/switch going on soon where I live, and I'm going to pieces about how messy my whole apartment is, will I manage to clean up in time, etc. However! I've worked in that position myself, and you know what? I didn't give a damn. As long as no one is getting hurt due to your messiness (like fishes dying in an uncleaned aquarium or something), it was fine.

Also? Be nice to them! Don't stand around staring as if you're afraid they'll steal something. Instead, offer them something to drink or maybe give them a bag of homemade cookies for their break. People who treated me and my co-workers like that got free work in return.

None.

Getting sick of their misogyny.

Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Yeah, I don't really know how to explain it. I guess just that it's so outside my own experience it's hard to relate to? Maybe I'm putting way too much emphasis on gender and thinking it makes things MASSIVELY different when in reality it really doesn't? I'm not sure.

Whatever the reason, I'm definitely not going to be an asshole to anyone about it and tell them their relationship isn't valid or whatever. It's just one of those weird things in my head.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind the accent because I didn't know what the accent should have been - and still don't. So it didn't destroy any of my expectations.

Also, she looked AMAZING in that film.

It makes me a bit sad that you're using your age as an explanation why you've never seen those movies. Just because you're young doesn't mean you can't enjoy older movies!

Re: What 4chan boards do you frequent?

Same here. Sometimes I'm simultaneously horny and in a weird place, and I get into seeing how far down the rabbit hole goes. Last time, I found this: http://monster-girls.125mb.com/

Re: Any tech people on here?

It might be something with your connection. We used to have the same problem when we had AT&T...phones would stay connected but the connection on the computer would randomly go out. We switched to a different ISP (Time Warner) a few months ago and haven't had a problem since.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-08-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Or "Partners", for that matter. I always thought that one was the worst, in terms of what the OP is talking about.

Apply elsewhere, other companies may be a lot of fun to work for.

I honestly think you should let go of this "dream job" idea as well. I'm not saying you shouldn't apply there again, but I think you need to stop idealizing it. Jobs are jobs. And even if you think you'll love a company you may not, even the best places can be full of shitty bosses and shitty coworkers or projects you may not like.

If you get a job at that "dream" company, then great! If not, that's also great! Find ways to be happy that don't revolve around work, because that's inevitably going to let you down.
