Characters you feel defensive about or overprotective of

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-09-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Are there characters that you feel overprotective for? The ones where, when you see criticism, you instinctively have to defend them?

For me it is Buffy and Willow, Lily Aldrin (not perfect by any means, but she gets so much hate that I just want to defend her), Daenerys Targaryen (and somewhat Catelyn Stark too just because while she isn't perfect, she gets so much hate), Donna Noble, and Hermione Granger.

Xander Harris, Peter Hale, I'm sure there are others.

Stiles. I'm not one of those people who think he's perfect and can do no wrong as I'm completely aware of his flaws, but I hate seeing people criticize him.

Ben from Parks and Rec! I love him, but he gets a bad rap both in canon and in fandom. Although nobody gets it worse in canon than Jerry... but we're talking about fanon, I think, and fandom generally seems to defend Jerry.

Vegeta. :| Steve Rogers. Ummmm. That is about it.

Danielle Phantom and Ginny Weasley. Mostly because of fandom reaction to them

Also Sam Manson at times, even though I'm critical of how the show wrote her, I dislike people just straight up bashing HER.

Ahh, that would be Hiradaira Chisaki from Nagi no Asukara ~ A Lull In The Sea~

Also Furuya and Sawamura from Diamond no Ace. (Have seen hate from fans of the other.. just stop!)

And Isaac Lahey.

Ginny Weasley and Fanny Price.

McCoy from Star Trek. Korra from LoK.

Thranduil. Some other LOTR characters but mostly Thranduil since a lot of people have negative views on him that I think can be refuted by a closer reading of The Hobbit or additional information from UT.

John Winchester. I tend to ignore all the stuff said about him and focus on what I saw when Jeffrey Dean Morgan (and even the younger actor) were actually present on the show. The writers have pissed on most all the characters (Dean and Sam included) that I think it's fair to ignore them and let the actors make the best of it.

Katniss, if only because I've been reading too many criticisms of dystopian fiction lately that manage to get her almost, but not quite, completely wrong.

I'd say Martha from Doctor Who, she's not even my favorite companion but I think a lot of people missed her awesomeness because they missed Rose and/or because they didn't like Martha crushing on the Doctor.

But she was honestly pretty awesome, she was intelligent and independent and of any companion in New Who she had the best end to her series.

Derek Hale, from Teen Wolf.

...which makes me the third or fourth person who's super protective of a Teen Wolf character. I'm not that surprised; that fandom can get downright vicious sometimes. :/

Emily Prentiss (inspired by secret 13). Definitely, definitely, definitely Dean Winchester. Uhhhhh. Lupin, Tonks, Ron. Some others maybe but those are the main ones that come to mind.

Thor, always Thor, I will actually fight you over Thor. Jane Foster, Steve Rogers, Uhura(from the reboot specifically), Vegeta, Bulma, Miranda Lawson... I think that's it.

(And Bucky Barnes sort of. I say that because he doesn't need to be defended in fandom at all, it's more in regards to interviews).

Piper Chapman. She can be entitled, clueless and callous but I really like her and I think she's a great character anyway. It annoys me when people act like she's boring or obnoxious.

Elizabeth Weir would be at the top of that list for me. Juliette Silverton, Catherine Rollins, Eleanor Bishop, Amy Pond. Riley Finn (I know). Jane Foster. Katherine Pulaski. I feel like there's some I'm forgetting.

That's not to say I always do jump to their defense, but I know I always want to.

Castiel and Anna Milton, though I'm more protective of Anna. Cas and Misha have got legions of fans and don't need defending so much, even though they do get a fair amount of flak from other fandom groups. Anna doesn't have too many fans, and a whole lot of people are vocal about their dislike of her.

The female protag of Persona 3 Portable. SHE'S CANON IN MY HEART, DAMNIT. 8(

Luke fon Fabre is a big one too. Mikasa Ackerman. Nitori Aiichiro. Deanna Troi. A lot of people, really!

Holmes takes drugs just because the world is a terrible place for for an observant man. He does only in a few books too.

Shawn from Psych is not fat in later seasons!

I tend to be more protective of female characters than males.

Joyce Summers, Buffy Summers, Cordelia Chase are the earliest examples. Cat Stark, since I discovered people don't like her for her choices. The Khaleesi.

Too many, but right now: Inaho Kaizuka and Rayet Areash.

Brienne of Tarth. I will shit on the next person who says she shouldn't have any romantic interests because she's a strong female character or because she's ugly. Fuck all that noise, she has romantic interests in the books.

I feel the most protective over Harry Potter characters, namely Cho Chang, Ginny Weasley, and Pansy Parkinson because they get the most hatred toward them (from what I've noticed).
