Hmm That would be interesting to know. I mean part of me feels like she probably hates it, or at least the whole BDSM aspect considering her beliefs (IIRC she made Edward very chaste). and tbh from what I know of Meyer...

I'm kinda surprised she has spoken up to complain about it before...or make some dramatic accusation of copying/ripping off. IDK

I was going to say, we do know what she thought of it. And I agree, it was a really nice way to respond. And I actually do agree with her, since 50 Shades clearly was always a very AU fanfic (I don't know much about the original but I do get the impression that there were never any vampires).

That's Stephanie Meyer? I heard a bunch of stuff about how hideous she was but I guess that was just bullshit. Her story is awful but she's very pretty.

Yeah IA I mean....I am aware that people can be petty and if they don't like something about someone some will be quick to harp on their appearance. As if that matters really. There's nothing wrong with noting that someone looks pretty even if you don't like them.

I was also annoyed by the really gross fat jokes about Cassie Claire. Even tho I don't approve of what she did(the direct and PROVEN plagiarism and bullying shit and the scamming before someone comments on that >.>) I think people should criticize her based on her actions and not just her weight.

I've always thought she was very pretty- I remember being surprised when I first saw her. For some reason, I wasn't expecting her to be attractive. I've never heard anyone calling her hideous. Though I'm not surprised.

Uh... no, it would've just created new fuckery. IP lawsuits in general are hard to fight (I know a couple of IP attorneys), and you betcha the media would be on that in a minute. It would be hard for her to get a lawsuit across since what's most commonly protected is prose, and it's very, very difficult to fight on elements, characters (when renamed and changed to be OOC for the original fandom; granted, Ana/Bella are pretty close, but they're so vague as characters, it'd still be hard to fight).

Other people have mentioned Meyers's response, and I have a (completely non-provable) suspicion that when 50 Shades hit big and the connection with Twilight came out, that she consulted with an IP attorney. Because if I were her, and I'd been told what any decent IP attorney would have (that it would be very difficult to fight, very expensive, and the chance of winning puts you at a high chance of losing lots of money and your suit), I'd have done the same damn thing -- be magnanimous and gracious about it.

OTOH, a Stephanie Meyer/EL James legal cage match would be kinda awesome for the lulz, so I'm kinda sad she didn't sue.

50 shades itself is not fanfiction, no matter what the idea started out as.

The characters are just plain too different, just for one thing.
