What characters do you feel the most protective of?

Some characters I like some whump but some characters I want to curl around and protect from the world, and my preferences seem to have little correlation with how hurt they are in canon.

Who do you most want to protect from the world? I have a passionate desire to see Timothy Drake receive hugs and comfort. Which he NEVER DOES

I don't feel this way about anyone, but there are characters I fervently want to protect from their own fandoms.

I don't mind people disliking her whenever someone DOES pay attention to her, but jesus, Vanellope has been basically isolated because virtual people are little shits and were afraid of something they didn't get to know.

Derek Hale. I get very defensive and protective of this stupid fictional character, but yes he needs all the hugs and comfort.

I want to protect them from all the bad things. Except for those times I want to see them go through the bad things THEN be protected from the bad things.

Probably Ada Wong, though she is usually capable enough to handle any direct danger she's in.

I've got several of these, but I feel fairly protective towards Tifa Lockhart these days (growing up and revisiting stuff as an adult gives you a hell of a lot more appreciation you never had as a kid, is all I'm saying).

And p. much all the aliens from the Green Lantern series. Kind of easy to not always be super defensive when the fandom doesn't give a shit about them 99% of the time, but the comics? That's another story... *I'll never get over what they did to Miri Riam, hhhhhhh*

athelstan. poor little guy.

erik from skyrim. i can't let him step out of that inn; he'd die!

grantaire and éponine from les mis. two of the most tragic characters in a story full of tragic characters.

Ronald Weasley. Brave, loyal, amazing best friend, wonderful husband, realistic character who learns from his mistakes and his flaws, and hilarious. Ron bashing makes me super sad :(

I have a list. It's a long list. There's usually at least one character in everything that I desperately want nothing to happen to, or for less stuff to happen to, or at least that they get a damn hug after all the shit they go through. Some fandoms, I have lots.

For some of the the ones I'm more passionately protective of, though:

Waldo Butters (Dresden Files), James Rhodes (MCU), JARVIS (MCU), Leonard H. McCoy (Trek TOS), Mary Watson (Downey!Holmes), Jonathan Carnahan (The Mummy), Molly Grue (Last Unicorn), Boris Dolokhov (Girl Genius), Simon Illyan (Vorkosigan Saga), and Harold Finch (Person of Interest). Nothing permanent is allowed to happen to any of these people. They are immortal and will live forever and everything will be fine, so help me.

Chris Argent. His dad was a murderer and straight up evil; he found out his sister was pretty much the same way, watched her die, had to see her come back to life as even crazier and more evil, and then had to resort to hunting her down himself; his wife was bitten by a werewolf and enlisted his help in committing suicide and his daughter killed. Jesus Christ, Teen Wolf. Someone help this man.

Anakin. Dude made shit choices. But they're choices I could easily see myself making were I in his situation. The whole Skywalker family dynamic reminds me a whole hell of a lot like my family too (just not messed up to that extreme extent) which might also be why I'm kind of defensive about the characters.

Nathan Wuornos. The boy makes such stupid decisions, but they're always the kind where you can see where someone this broken and in this insane a situation would totally do that. I want to protect him from himself, and I want bad things to stop happening to him so he will stop responding to them badly.

(Duke, on the other hand? Duke I want to suffer, because he's gorgeous when he does it and he can mostly take care of himself. Doesn't mean I don't want to hug him quite a lot, though.)

Lara Croft.

Bear with me, this might get a little meta-ception.

I feel protective over first / middle Lara against the newest Lara

I feel protective against the people who dismiss the first / middle Lara as fapbait, a bimbo, or a "fighting fuck toy" (Oh fuck me I hate that that is not a recognised trope for "Bad female character". Does anyone ever comment that James Bond is immaculately turned out during and after his fights?).

I feel protective against all the people praising the new Lara as a massive move forward in female representation compared to the old Lara because the new one wears pants and has smaller boobies.

More of all, I feel protective of the old / middle Lara because I never felt protective over her in the games. I am a male (Yes, yes, this isn't my fight. I should just shut up and be a good ally), and I never once felt like I "Failed to protect" Lara when I died. I felt like I fucked up and I died when Lara died. I feel protective that this legacy of the badass is being robbed but this new idea that I am supposed to feel protective over the new Lara because she's frightened and has big realistic eyes and she's in so much pain and needs my help to go on, because, and I paraphrase, but not drastically "No-one who played tomb raider played to empathize with Lara, they played to watch and help Lara". Utter bullshit.

These are all of the 'protecting from the fandom' variety, but w/e:

Pretty much everyone from The Walking Dead, but particularly Beth and Carl. They both get such a disproportionate amount of shit from the fandom when you consider how impressive it is that they're even alive, especially considering they're kids. If they aren't your cup of tea then fine, whatever, but at least don't undermine what they've done or write them off because of NORMAL HUMAN REACTIONS, just because you'd like to think you'd do better.

(I'm pretty much protective of any character who gets written off as whiny/whatever because of realistic reactions to difficult shit, particularly when it's on Tumblr and every other person is triggered by eye contact or whatever.)

Other specific characters: Sansa Stark, Chuck Hansen, probably more but obviously my mind blanks.

Apart from that, there are characters throughout different fandoms who are widely loved, but whose character concept seems to go right over people's heads. Yeah, yeah, different headcanons, different character interpretations, no one's really right or wrong - but some of what I've seen are just plain stupid and obvious projections, and it's even more frustrating when it's an obvious projection of whatever social issue is taking the front stage at that particular point in time.

Carol from Walking Dead (TV version). Mostly because I see a lot of people say bad things about her being an abuse survivor or calling her ugly or weak or a bad person and I identify way too strongly with her story. It's less wanting to protect her in story as it is wanting to protect her from the fandom.

And most of the characters from the original Primeval. They've all been through too much, just let them be happy and give them Danny back please.
