Yeah, those kind of people are the most annoying.

Man, some shippers just really take that shit seriously.

They sound irritating and that makes me hope their ship sinks like the Titanic.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeep, and this is why I am over with shipping right now. Fandom is really getting on my nerves. Just shut the fuck up about how your OTP is totally canon, all the other ships suck boo hoo hoo. Don't you have better things to worry about? What a waste of energy! I DON'T CARE. I just want to read fic!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Where were you when we needed you yesterday?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
What?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt. I think somebody needed you - I don't know, I wasn't here yesterday.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I love that this secret is framed over an image of Romeo and Juliet. A+ image choice, though I hope the shipping hasn't actually gotten to the point where anyone's wishing their pair could tragically kill themselves for love of one another rather than risk having them live and love someone else?

It is!
*happy sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
No offense OP, but why do you care so much? I mean, unless your friend is going around yelling at other people and making them feel like shit, what's the harm?

If she wants to interpret the story so that her OTP are soul mates who could never love anyone as much as they love each other (and despises the thought of another pairing being canon) well…isn't that her right?

If she wants to write big, long gushing essays or moon over them who cares?

I just don't see why this is a big deal unless she's being an asshole to other people and accusing them of shit or insulting them.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP...just personally I find it annoying when people can talk of literally nothing else and constantly have to "prove" the it lenses are true

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Prove their lenses...auto correct booboos

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
But…can't you just ignore it?

I LOVE writing meta about my OTPs -- dissecting their scenes, interpreting the story. I write big, honking essays about how much I love them and I'm unashamed about it.

I don't tell other people that they have to ship it though or that they're ships are bad. I might write why other ships don't work for me on a personal level, but I'm just expressing my subjective opinion.

I just don't understand why people get so up in arms about it. Unless someone is insulting you or being a dick, why is it a big deal if they want to squee over an OTP?

OP

DA

This doesn't seem to apply to the OP, but as for people in general who get up in arms about this...

I've noticed that a lot of people interpret meta about ships or characters as the author telling people that they MUST ship the ship or like the character. Like, they'll treat your squee as a manifesto or something and get super defensive because how dare you tell them what to think or how to interpret the text... as if you posting your interpretation means that they now can't post their own.

You sound like a minority. Most massive OTP shippers spend every other sentence of their "squee" not actually squeeing over how great their OTP is, but rather, going "HOW CAN ANYONE NOT SHIP THEM."

Or writing snide, smug, sneering posts sarcastically going "oh, yeah, suuuuure. ~totally~ platonic." And having public conversations with other shippers that basically amount to "lol, those people who ship a rival ship/prefer a platonic friendship/don't care about them all that much are really blind aren't they? I mean, we KNOW they're in love, everyone with a brain knows they're in love, I just shake my head at them stupid little non-shippers!"

If more shippers were like what you describe, the annoyance would be way lower.

That's not exactly the same thing that the secret maker was referring to though. Squeeing about a ship is one thing, but interpreting them as "not being able to love anyone else half as much" is basically accidental character-bashing, as it implies those two characters are pretty fucking terrible narcissistic people. Which might be a lot more irritating than squeeful shipping for other people who like those characters but don't ship them or who don't ship them in quite as zero-sum a way.

90 percent of people in my old fandom. Or else I'm bitter and cynical...maybe both.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I always wonder what fandoms people are in when I see secrets like this. All of mine have their share of rabid shippers, but almost everyone I talk to, even amongst the rabid shippers, is a multishipper who doesn't get too fussed about what's canon, and who'd never in a million years say that the characters in their OTP can never love anyone else.

Not saying that what OP is describing doesn't happen, but I... might like to avoid fandoms like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I guess this is just the week for "OMG SHIPPERS WTF."

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, for some of those secrets I've been getting a 'tone-it-down-shippers' kind of vibe.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm really resisting the urge to tone it up.

You know, as long as they're not having serious real life problems, you're allowed to tell friends and (in some cases) family when you're not interested in a subject. I've never had the situation come up on either side, but I'd encourage it from my friends.
