I want to know where you hang out, because I hear so much about Elsa and so little about Anna.

Same. Not to mention Disneyland itself where there are, like, 30 little Elsa's running around for every 1 Anna, Elsa's merchandise gets entire walls while Anna's gets one shelf, etc...

I don't get where OP is coming from either. In my circles of the fandom, Elsa is to Frozen, what Stiles is to Teen Wolf. O.o

Seriously, don't let people dictate which character you should love more and why...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always liked Elsa more because she's introverted like I am, and a lot of the things she does in the movie, I can relate to.

Honestly I've always been super surprised that so many little girls like Elsa more, because I'd have thought Anna would be the better role model. Elsa's (pun not intended but I'll go with it anyway) kind of cold and reserved.

Don't let those people make you upset, OP. Just because you relate to Elsa doesn't mean they're saying your problems aren't important. If anything, they're probably trying to get Anna some attention, because her older sister is often the one everyone focuses on, both online and in real-life media. They're not making light of your own issues.

Little girls like Elsa more because she's the one with powers, an awesome ice castle, a prettier dress, and the best character song. No deeper reason than that.

Fandom is always like that, a vocal minority always shows up supporting the characters they don't think get enough attention, and bashing those they think are "rivals" for attention.

'I'm a monster.'

Lol, no. You're just melodramatic. That's if this secret is even real, which I kinda doubt.

I feel like I want to see receipts for the mental illnesses these days considering how many self-diagnosers there are here. I know OCD is so five years ago compared to "being on the spectrum" or the newer "oppositional defiance disorder" but it's still high on the internet's hypochondriac list.

I quit teaching this year and completely changed careers because of parents who insisted their kids had stuff when they had never seen a professional for it. If I heard one more affluent white mother tell me her kid was "on the spectrum" when the kid was just an asshole from having two asshole parents, I was going to become a full blown alcoholic.

And the kids get older and start going around on tumblr telling the world they are a "self diagnosed aspie" and start going in on all that multiple system fiction kin shit.

People take this movie way too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been like a year, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
On my tumblr Elsa is the more popular character because of her anxiety and depression. I think she became less popular only because people are tired of Frozen but in general I thought Elsa was the more popular one.

Personally I identify with Elsa a lot. She's the only princess who I can really say that besides maybe Belle though I have Ariel's collecting habits. I have severe anxiety and have even said the "don't feel" thing. However, I actually like both Anna and Elsa mostly equally. I'd say like whichever one you want to like and don't worry about what other people say.

Frozen criticism has officially disappeared up its own arse.

Goddammit Tumblr.

Frozen is a valid movie for various reasons. Fuck you for ruining it for so many people.

B/

That's all I have to say about that.

And OP, you ain't no monster for relating to a character. Jesus tap dancing Christ on a cracker.

I liked Anna well enough, but if were to know her IRL, she'd have annoyed me to no end and I'd have avoided her like the plague.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't help it, I'm starting to find it really funny how Elsa's struggle is being seen by people as [insert mental illness/differing sexuality/etc.]-- not because people's struggles are funny, but because that really hammers home how completely generic her entire story really was. You really can apply anything to it. It's the same thing behind generic pop songs being written as non-specifically as possible so that tween girls can easily project themselves into it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny how the whole empathy thing works. Where you can relate to someone going through an situation because you had relatable emotions going through a different situation. Funny how anxiety and fear doesn't only happen in one circumstance.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, isn't it awful? They should have been more specific and original with a complex, adult story that you have to really analyze to find the One True Meaning of. Genericness is always a sign of laziness. It's never there because specifics are irrelevant and/or the point is to be relatable to lots of different people.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Truly, things being accessible to young girls is terrible and should never happen.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Something can be a metaphor for more than one thing, without necessarily making it bad storytelling, IMO.

The message of Elsa's story is "if you force your child to hide who she is, bad stuff will happen." It can be seen as a pretty obvious metaphor for being a lesbian and being forced into the closet. It can also be seen as a metaphor for/depiction of what people with mental illness endure. That doesn't devalue the message AS SUCH - if anything, a story that a great variety of people can relate to is a good story, esp. if you're going for mass appeal like Disney are.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Calm down OP. The people who care about favorite Disney princess not being right are the ones who are nuts.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Where do you hang out? All I ever hear is about Elsa—the other characters are nonexistent in comparison. She used to be my favorite character, but even I'm tired of how overhyped she is.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think that you know that this is related to the obsession and I think it may be more complex than just typical fandom stuff. I don't think you're a monster or should feel bad about not appreciating anna's suffering. On some level I'm sure you recognize that it's replicating the "oh. people with mental illness never think about how much of a burden they are on the healthy!" toxicity that people that are bad with dealing with mental illness dole out. It's missing the point of the movie which was working together and having support in recovery. It's a fluffy disney version of dealing with mental health so it's not going to get into support systems and everyone needing support or family dynamics needing to change or any of that.

I wanted to write a longer comment but I don't really have time, nor the knowledge of OCD to be truly helpful but I'm sure you've worried about being a burden on your "Anna's" of the world so aren't a monster in spite of what the obsessions are telling you. I suggest you talk with your therapist or someone and stick to the corners of fandom that have an understanding of it. (don't debate it until you're in a better mental health place yeah?) I would talk to your therapist about these things and work on it like any obsession. Also if you're not getting help, advocate until you do get help–– I didn't realize that I could. It might not be possible or you to but unless it's absolutely impossible then I'd recommend doing it. You need a therapist that gets you, your issues, and will provide adequate therapy- it's very difficult to find therapists that specialize in specific issues like OCD and are covered by insurance etc etc. I would just stick to the understanding part of fandom and work on your coping mechanism for dealing with obsessions about this and the larger issues here.

tldr: this is beyond fandom and you need some kind of support and I'm a random on fandomsecrets that cannot actually help (nor do I have ocd/nor understand it) but I hope you do have/get support and that things improve. And i hope the obsession flare up about this stops.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
OP: Thanks.

I'm in therapy, but the sessions didn't line up with a fairly bad spike, resulting in the secret. You pretty much got all of the problems right, and it's kind of a relief to see a sane perspective on the complications. Thank you. Sincerely.

Nah, it's the way fandom works. Some people who like the less popular character feel their preferences make them superior, they become this loud vocal minority creating "defense squads" to talk about how their favorite is so!! overlooked!!1 and it keeps going until their fave is the new hype until the backlash occurs and the pendulum swings back again.
