Ben Folds.

19. ♥ I have a career I love, a supportive family and friends, and a great new guy in my life, but part of me would still follow the Doctor in a heartbeat. I feel you.

44. I was stunned when I heard he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's :( As everyone's been saying, it's not as though we should be mourning him yet, not while he's still around and kicking, but it's still a shame. He's such an amazing, creative mind.

[identity profile] baka-tenshi.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
48): I agree with you so much there. I wish they wouldn't do it for other girl groups as well.

(If that's who I think it is:) She is an annoying, narcissistic little shit and you need to stop encouraging her. Also, I'm pretty damn sure that half of her claims are complete bullshit.

[identity profile] comic-heroine.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
43: actually there's a lot more involved than that. The writers don't make as much as you think. Most of them get by on contract work, and the industry gets more complicated with contracts, LLCs, copyright, selling your screenplays, lawsuits, and ect ect. Don't let the minority kid you.

36: Japan hates me, too. It's stolen my best friend and a guy I really cared about. But no, believe it or not, it's a pretty racist & sexist country. :/

50

[identity profile] flauta-de-pollo.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
it's loads better than "i hate my fic ;-;"

[identity profile] wolfieziri.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
To whoever wrote #2, AMEN. Angstyfic is too overdone. LIFE IS NOT A BOTTOMLESS PIT OF EMO.

Also, #47? HELL YES, monocle!sex, someone needs to DO THAT now.

Also? I want a pair of Air Gear too, so don't fret Anon #33.

#50

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
No. It's not just you. It's you and every other author out there that understands what the author's note up at the beginning or after the story is there for and that no one wants to hear you break the flow of the story just to hear you praise yourself.

ALSO #2

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's your opinion. Some of us like angst!fic, some of us like angst!smut!fic. People like different things, that's just the way the world works.

2. I can definitely see where you're coming from, but some people like the "realism" of that sort of thing, so... eh. Think of it as a kind of kink, if it makes you feel better.

22. I know the feeling.

25. Yeah, me too.

2 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
It does, actually. Thank you.

43...

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
And because someone said it on the radio, it must be true?

I'm a writer. I've written for three shows that have all been canceled. Even when I had work, I never made more than 45 thousand dollars a year (this is living in LA, where the cost of living is higher than just about anywhere else in the country). I never worked less than 60 hour work weeks. And the thing about being a writer? You always take your work home with you. The thought that any of us work less than twenty hours a week is a fucking laugh.

I made less than 6000 dollars in 2007 from residuals. I get by working at a bookstore. I have two kids, no spouse. WGA insurance is all that gets us by.

So, go ahead and let hearsay dictate what you do. Just don't be surprised when the rest of us think you're a fuckwit.

Re: 43...

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
not the OP.

some of us are thinking of you writers during this holiday season and sending good wishes your way. god speed and good luck.

#38 - Like tears in the rain!

[identity profile] numb3r-5ev3n.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah! *high fives*

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 01:53 am (UTC)(link)

9. Randomly, that picture made me squee so hard. Kitties!

14. Cry some moar or go start your own community. They're not always going to get everything right, yanno.

19. Who wouldn't give it all up for a chance with him?

38. Man, Ladyhawke was one of my favourite movies growing up.

50. If someone likes their own stuff, so what? As long as you're not stroking your own ego and creating author's notes that are longer than the fic itself -- oh dear god, I still laugh my ass off when I think of that -- why should it matter if you like what you've written? If you're always being self-deprecating about your writings then it usually seems like you're fishing for compliments.

28

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Relax.
I doubt they're looking for you.

Re: 28

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
You're probably right.

They're too busy whining about the bigger people they already dislike.

[identity profile] shobogan.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
2 - I understand if the angst is gratuitous - just dreary and grim all the way through a long story - because that's just...depressing and eventually boring. Angst in general, though - I love it in oneshots and healthy doses in longer fics. Me, I can't get much lighter than bittersweet.

14 - Is it immature of me to giggle?

35 - ♥ Haruka/Michiru was my first OTP, and I still love it to death. (...Also. Niko/Karolina? I'm only on volume one but I'm shipping them already.

50 - I'd rather people be honestly proud of their work than weeping out false modesty for validation. I think my fics are good. If I didn't, I wouldn't post them.

Also...

[identity profile] shobogan.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
43? Most of those people have a steady job. Most writers live off residuals a goodly amount of the time, and that's what they're fighting for. Get informed before maligning people.

[identity profile] dejana.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
9. I love comfy old fandoms. I rejoined the Sailormoon fandom soon after it started dying, and now that all the Harry Potter books are out I'm starting to get into that. Yay for missing the wank wave. :D

Confession, though... although I'm sure I'll always prefer getting into fandom late, I still kick myself for missing the cutting edge of everything. I know it's stupid, but I do. :\

43. Hearing things like that makes me wonder how one breaks into that sort of business. >.>

44. DISCWORLD FTW! I've been a fan of the Discworld longer than anything else, and I think Terry Pratchett will always be my favorite author. I've never fangirled anything like I fangirl him. But... I've never even drawn near the fandom (except for belonging to [livejournal.com profile] discworld) because what I primarily do in fandoms is write fic, and I know I'm not good enough to write Discworld properly. If I tried, it would be nothing but a stain on its awesomeness. So I almost never even consider it. :\

[identity profile] legrotesque.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
18 - Hell yes.
44 - FUCK yes.
48 - Ugh, I know. It makes me really sad. :(

16. I think that MAY have quite possibly been what the creators were going for.

21. BRILLIANT!

33. It took me about a minute to read the secret because I kept staring and thinking 'Man, he's got a nice ass.'

47. He kept his monocle on the entire time.

It'd be OOC otherwise!

re: 33

[identity profile] dev-chieftain.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto on that.

14

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Often I agree with you.

[identity profile] ingridmatthews.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
43. Someone probably has already mentioned this but these writers only work occasionally, like construction workers, etc. So whatever they make during that week to six months has to hold them over for twice as long. Also, most of them pay for health insurance out of pocket, with subsidies from the union. So, don't worry. Very few of them are making more than you in those 20 hours. BTW, try a little moar gratitude and empathy.

29. I love her too. Her Led Zeppelin moment was the only good laugh the movie gave me.

26. Yeah, you're right. It used to be wittier, didn't it?

23. Many great novelists wrote novels based on charismatic friends. If I had to bet, "The Great Gatsby" was probably someone the author knew in RL. Change the name and write the book!

2. I like sweet smut too. I'm sad it seems to be a niche more than a norm these days.

OP of 29

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the whole movie was really mundane to me. That moment you talked about plus Puss'n'Boots telling Shrek his thoughts when Fiona told him she was pregnant were the only funny parts. Overall it makes me think that Shrek 4 & 5 will be worse.

[identity profile] candy--chan.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
50. I don't think it's out of line for an author or artist to say "I'm very pleased with how this came out" or "I really love this idea" or things of that nature. I've done it myself in my author's notes at the end of the story when I've written something that has come out exactly as I wanted it and I feel it's reflective of my better work. But I usually just write, say, a sentence or two expressing my pride in what I've done. I don't feel I should have to be ashamed for reasonably verbalizing that pride.

However, if it's full paragraphs gushing about how awesome it is and how everyone should praise and worship, THAT is annoying. It's also sort of irritating when it's stuck in the middle of a fic. Author's notes should either be before or after the story--but that's my opinion.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Fully agree here.

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
12. Haven't even seen HSM, but I agree. The Tiz > Hudgens.

21. HAH! Nice.

26. WHEN WILL THEY FINALLY GET TOGETHER AND AIR A COMMERCIAL OF THE TWO POST-SEX? WHEN, I ASK YOU, WHEN?! SEX SELLS!!!

40. No idea who's the other crossover'd fandom, but getting back into Buffy is always a good thing.

43. Just end the damn strike already. I hope the writers win, but still. They = BAWWWWWWW.

50. Unless, of course, their work is worthwhile and the author is realistic AND proud of his/her work. I'd rather read "I'm really happy with how this turned out" than "Well, here's my fic... it sucks, I know, but read it anyway and tell me what you think... baww..."

[identity profile] asgaja.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
40: That would be Alien vs Predator, judging from the image. And the plausibility of Buffy in AvP kicking ass is totally entertaining for my fangirling mind.

I'm pretty sure that's what they're leading towards too. I am really, really opposed to it... but yeah, I can't help thinking that's where it's going too.

Aw, but they both deserve someone nice, who understands them and doesn't just want to use them. They might actually get happy, for once. ;_;

2, 25, 43, 50

(Anonymous) 2007-12-25 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
2. Is this going to have to be on a T-shirt or something? Your personal opinion is not the end all be all truth. What you think smut should be is not necessarily the same as what other people think. What you do is not what everyone else has to do. Don't like, DON'T READ. And as to the ill-wishing part, don't make me laugh. The very fact that you're all writing fic for RP fandoms means that you are, on some level, living vicariously through real people. Writing happy, fluffy smut about two band members isn't wishing them well anymore than writing an angst fic: it's indulging your personal fantasy, it's all in your head. Once you've come to terms with that, everything is fair game.

25. Give me one good reason why. Those three spend most of their in-game time not being in the same room as each other. The fandom created the OT3 - in canon it can hardly be considered 'existent'.

43. You're an dickwad. Please read up extensively on the subject before making such idiotic claims.

50. Oh God forbid that writers like their own writing. How about if everyone walked around being complete self-hating basket cases and stopped writing altogether, would that make you happy? Is that enough false modesty for you?

25

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, saying you don't like the OT3/prefer individual pairings/think it's overrated is one thing (I could do with less of people insisting it's a "canon threesome" myself) but uhhh did you seriously just call it nonexistent when all three characters pretty much spend both games trying to save and get back to each other? Because, see, they don't like this state of affairs where they spend most of their in-game time not being in the same room as each other. That rather suggests there is an existing relationship there.

By your standards, the only relationships that exist in the game are Leon/Yuffie and Sora/Donald/Goofy.
