There's this stupid-as-fuck idea I keep seeing all over my dash – sometimes in reblogs by people who are otherwise not total idiots, but for some reason have bought into this ridiculous misconception. Namely, the idea that all of humanity lived in peace and harmony and no one ever tried to conquer or enslave anyone else until TEH EVUL EUROPEENS!1!!11!

I'm sorry, but no. Pre-colonial South America and Central America beg to differ. Ever heard of the Incan empire? The Mayan empire? The Aztec empire? Do you know what the word "empire" means? It means: "We maintain our political power by conquering the fuck out of everyone around us." The Romans weren't the only ones who did that, you know.

Also, the ancient Egyptians were invaded by their very NOT-European neighbours on multiple occasions, and you'd think the tumblr SJW crowd would be aware of that, since they clearly are soooooo knowledgable about Egypt. I mean, tumblrinas sure seem fond of taking every opportunity to remind everyone that EGYPT IS PART OF AFRICA AND EGYPTIANS ARE NOT WHITE. Well, no shit Sherlock. You know what? I have never heard anyone deny that Egypt is part of Africa. That's basic fucking geography. Anyone who's ever looked at a fucking map knows that. And I'm pretty sure most people who know anything at all about history also know that the ancient Egyptians weren't white, that's another fucking no-brainer. Yeah, they're always played by pasty white actors in movies, but so what? It's fucking movies. Everyone knows not to trust Hollywood to be historically accurate. Braveheart had William Wallace knocking up Isabella of France, for fucks sake. The only people who believe the shit they see in movies are gullible idiots. You too are a gullible idiot AND a tool if you honestly think you're somehow promoting social justice by pointing out that Egypt is part of Africa (again, something anyone can figure out just by looking at a fucking map).

They were, but let's not pretend that "European evil" is some special brand of evil. It's not. Everyone all over the world was equally as shitty to one another throughout history.

Europeans just had a confluence of factors work out that they had technology (and germs) that gave them an advantage.

Honestly, I think believing that the pre-Colonial Americas were 100% peaceful and harmonious is almost racist in its own right, because it's dangerously close to the "noble savage" mentality.

YES!

If the Native Americans had horses, North and South American would have been way different. I would have given all my money that the Europeans would have landed on the shores of the Western hemisphere in nations that were knee deep in war. It is so much easier to wage war when you have horses carrying your men and your armory.

Look at how fast the Native Americans adapted to using horses and waging warfare once they were able to take them from the Europeans who brought them over.

That would have been an amazing what if story. How when the ancestors crossed over to Asia to North America, they found a way to bring horses with them. See what would have changed.

Yeah. That comes from a serious ignorance of history and it's sad. :( Though to be fair, it's not something most American schools teach.

to be clear, that's more because of a general failure of american schools to teach about non-American (and maybe European at a push) history, rather than anything else

It's not just a failure of the schools, to also be fair. Despite preaching self education, Tumblr doesn't seem to do that and jump right on the ship of 'AMERICANS/EUROPEANS ARE EVIL!1'.

Yeah, I get the feeling that a lot of people on tumblr either didn't pay attention in history class, willfully ignore certain things, or were just given a really shitty overview in school. I think a lot of tumblrites would be pretty surprised by the fact that slavery existed in Africa long before white people got involved in the slave trade. True, it was typically a "nicer" form of slavery than it was in America but slavery is still slavery no matter which way you slice it

Not gonna lie. I like the idea that some people think me inherently more evil than others purely because of my race. I figure it makes them more likely to fear me and cower in my presence.

Not to mention all the slavery that went on in Africa and, unfortunately, was taken advantage of during the Europe/Africa/New World slave trade. :/

It's a real fact that white people have perpetuated the most recent and historically memorable acts of slavery (at least to the Western world) and it shouldn't be denied, because that would be denying the reality of current race relations. But it was also, in some ways, historical chance that even put them in that position. If any other group of people had happened to develop an empire like the Roman Empire that had such far-reaching effects, if any other group had happened to discover sea navigation and gunpowder first...history might look really different. The "enslaving and doing horrible things to other people" thing isn't a white person thing; it's a human thing - it's just that white people had the biggest opportunity to express it (and they delivered).

(Some people - probably nobody on F!S, but some people in some places - would claim Europeans discovered this shit first because they're smarter. I don't think that's true. The indigenous people of South America did some pretty memorable stuff technology-wise. So did the Chinese - inventors of paper, anyone? Other groups too, without a doubt. Maybe some of it had to do with placement of certain resources, or the emergence of certain cultural movements that lead to different researches.)

While I agreed with everything you said before this, you're way off base here. It is not okay that Egyptians are played by white European actors, and "it's the movies" is not an acceptable excuse. You're right that movies can and do take creative liberties with rewriting history, but there's an enormous difference between adding unrealistic sex scenes, and racial whitewashing.

That being said, I don't think lots of SJWs understand what Egyptian ethnicity is, either. It's not the same as being "black". And Cleopatra was part only part Egyptian/African at best, she was at least mostly Greek.
