I think there's a difference between "what an awesome villain, what a thoroughly evil character," and "flawless queen everyone should be like her what a feminist icon" yknow

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

But the problem is that then the argument becomes about how much people actually talk about male characters along the lines of A as opposed to B, and how much people actually talk about this character along the lines of A as opposed to B. And it's a debate that I find hugely frustrating because it's something that doesn't seem to have any possibility of a solution. It comes down so much to perception and to the specific parts of fandom that someone is hanging out in. And ultimately it just comes down to random yelling.

And that's not even getting into the more nuanced positions in between those two.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd put the blame on the people trying to turn her into some sort of feminist representation or role model, or bringing feminism into the picture of an insane villain in the first place. If that weren't going on, nobody would bat an eye at "I think this character is awesome"

People would have side-eyed the Joker fans if people had made him a role model for neuro-atypical people, but nobody did that

This.

Enjoying a sociopath character, male or female, doesn't equate to them being any kind of role model. If anyone said they truly wanted to be like The Joker, I'd be as disturbed as I would be if someone said they wanted to be like Amy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I use Cersei Lannister from GOT as an example. Do I like her as in root for her to succeed and want to be friends with her? Heck no! I'll cheer if and when she meets her end. But the thing is George RR Martin did such a good job in crafting a compelling backstory/motivations for her that I can't help but be fascinated by her. I want to see her character to the bitter end.

Exactly.

Am as an awesome villain, in the sense people like Hannibal or the Joker for being interesting = totally valid.

Thinking she's a rolemodel = oh honey, no.

But it seems OP seems to just enjoy the character, while fully knowing she's a sociopath, which I don't see as a problem.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It is okay to like her. But people have a problem with others holding her up as a feminist Icon.

People think the joker is awesome but you don't hear them saying he should be what clowns should aspire to.

Oh, Amy is awesome, in the same way that the Joker is awesome. Heck, both of them even sometimes do have things about them I can identify with.

The problem definitely comes when people idolize such characters because they, and other characters like them, are absolutely terrifying examples of some of the worst human behaviour.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally loved her too OP. I love villians in general and want to see more bad women winning.
she's bad she's terrible, she's awful.
I love it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people who idolize Heath Ledger's Joker. They're nut jobs. Likewise are the people who idolize Amy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the movie but I don't, in principle, think there's anything wrong with liking a bit of fictional-world radical revolutionary violence

however, I know that everyone here disagrees with me, so

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not radical revolutionary violence. She frames and murders innocent people.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's easy as hell, and not necessarily wrong, to frame it that way, though.

I mean, I think that's generally the case for things of this nature, although I acknowledge it is possible that there is some specific feature of Gone Girl that makes it impossible.

Vigilante justice is often murdering people because they've decided these people don't deserve their right to due process and that the laws against capital punishment don't matter, and it's still very popular because it satisfies people in some way.

There's not a whole lot radical and revolutionary about a bored, spoiled and pissed off little rich girl deciding to take revenge on innocent people (or certainly people who haven't done anything above the norm for other bored and priviledged people) for the way her mommy and daddy didn't pay her enough attention.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the character. But framing her as anything radical is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
well i mean i would assume that any person who liked the character would completely disagree with your description of the character, so i am going to go ahead and assume that there's some wiggle room for interpretation here

Man I loved Amy, she's a completely messed up human being and an awful person but she was awesome to watch.

Isn't she? It's like I wish Gone Girl was a series and not a movie because I want to see if she can keep evading arrest or does she eventually screw up? (Will she ever murder Nick?) And if she does, what is the aftermath? It would be like House of Cards meets Hannibal.

I loved her too BECAUSE she was such an awesome villain.

It's just some people put her on a pedestal as a feminist hero, which she is not. So, if you say you like Amy, some people think that you are pro her actions. Which sucks. I don't approve of her actions. I like her because she is an evil genius.

Text: I loved her and thought she waqs awesome

Bit unfair because people love sociopathic male villains like Heath Ledger’s joker, but yeah, keeping this a secret.

Meh. Villains, especially the chaotic type though I don't know who this one is tbf, draw weird fans who like to justify everything they do, and that's not really new.

With the crazy dudes, if his fans don't want to bone him, it's all about the, "HE'S JUST LIKE ME! CRAAAAWLING IIIIIN MY SKIIIIIIIN~".

Whereas with the crazy chicks, if her fans don't want to bone her, it's all about the, "Perfect goddess railing against the patriarchy.", on top of some linkin park.

Imo, they're not that far off.

Can someone explain to me what this movie is about?

Because seriously, I find all this idea of 'a violent killer as a feminist icon? GASP' really strange because of Hothead Paisan, Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist. It's already been done, decades before, and Hothead Paisan was probably more popular. (She had a freakin' CANDY BAR for a while!)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've never even heard of "Hothead Paisan", tbh

I guess she's supposed to be a feminist icon because he cheated and was a douche, but I think framing someone for murder and then actually killing someone else (and framing him for kidnapping and abuse), plus the insemination thing, puts her more in the categories of sadistic manipulator and killer.
