Lines that ruin a fic for you

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I was reading a fun fic about Steve (Rogers) reading fanfic, and getting frustrated at the technical inaccuracies more than the pairings. So, you know, cute.

Then we get to someone saying that Steve Rogers must be "demisexual". Strike one.

Strike two? The person saying it is Tony Stark. Because Tony Stark would know what demisexuality is, and would be the one to speculate that Steve is demisexual.

Anyone else read a fic recently that was good until one line?

OMG. When I read your subject my FIRST thought was, "I read a fic where Steve called himself demisexual and I just had to backbutton." I can't stand those.

If someone calls themselves a demisexual in a fic, I am done (so it helps when people tag for it so I know what to avoid). And having Steve Rogers call himself that (or Bucky/Tony saying he is)? That is fucking stupid.

I can't stand when characters are referred to as weeping. I don't mind when they cry but weeping just sounds silly and soap-opera-ish.

Weeping depends on the character and the canon. Some people in some situations really turn on the histrionic heartbroken waterworks so "weep" works better than "cry."

Kind of. This didn't RUIN the fic for me, but it definitely made me look at the author differently.

It was a Stony fic where the author absolutely insisted on writing Bucky as an asshole, kind of a devil-on-the-shoulder for Steve who was always picking on "poor woobie Tony".

I didn't stop reading the fic, but every time asshole!Bucky reared his head, I would just be so amused and I couldn't help but think of the author as an insecure child. It was so blatantly obvious that she felt threatened by how much Steve obviously cared about Bucky in the Winter Soldier that it was hilarious to me.

Some people get mad to see their favorites demonized, but I kind of get a perverse joy out of it because it's of how readily it shows that the author is insecure.

I read something pretty similar recently but flipped, where Tony was the one being ridiculously vilified. Then I made the mistake of reading the comments and everyone was patting themselves on the back for shipping the logical ship (Stucky) and calling anyone that ships Stony childish, etc.

Just any kind of OOC dialogue, period.

Yeah, I've been reading a lot of Thranduil/Bard lately. None of it is particularly good but it's fic-candy and enjoyable as such.

However, lines about Legolas from the movie (about Thranduil messing up with raising Legolas or about Legolas leaving and Thranduil being lonely now or Thranduil being a distant dad) instantly stops my enjoyment. It's usually only ever a throwaway line and not a crucial plot-point, but it aggravates me.

Oh man I can't deal with how bad some of the Thranduil/Bard stuff is. I mean, some of the smut's ok because I can ignore the OOcness, but the fluff? And the AUs? D:

Why does the Legolas thing bother you?

The word "butt" in porn narrative. I start cracking up (no pun... okay yes, pun intended) and can't take the fic seriously.

If a character who it would be IC for saying it, that's fine, but if it's the narrative, nope.

Not recently, but I once read a fic that, while it wasn't very good in general (it was Draco/Hermione, which should tell you all you need to know), had an author with the incredibly baffling conviction that "crimson" meant silver. There was at least one other color fuckup, but that was the one that came up the most often.

Oh, many, but it's hard to remember my dealbreakers off the topic of my head.

However, yesterday I was reading a fic that did something really rare: it actually acknowledged that one of the characters in this canon pairing is non-monogamous. Then by the end the author had this character apologizing for it and promising to settle down :/

I MIGHT have read this fic. I am generally annoyed if people really tr to shoehorn their own headcanons into a fic. (And obviously every fic is somewhat headcanon, I just mean where people almost seem like the have an agenda).

But really it's not so much lines. Like, there is not one single lines, but there's stuff that ruins it.

- A significant amount of OOC dialogue, example Steve Rogers talking like a 12-year-old girl.
- Bad sex scenes, and lord knows there's a lot of them.
- Stuff that I'm really not into at pivotal moment . This one is harder to explain, but, some non-kinks I can just sort of "read over" unless writers write them in certain was, at which point I'll just abandon fic.

There was this PG OT3 fic I was enjoying until a character kissing another was described as "paternal". It wasn't an attempt of daddy kink, so I don't get why the author thought that was the right word to use.

I read a Charles/Erik fic that was an AU based on the Disney Tarzan film, and it was pretty well written. But then there was a particular line that said that Charles taught Tarzan!Erik English and that he was practically fluent after 3 weeks, and I could not suspend my disbelief enough for that.

I actually use special snowflake identifiers to describe myself, but I still cringe and usually backbutton when I see them in a fic. 98% of the characters I read fic about just wouldn't be aware that terms like demisexual even exist, let alone be deep enough down the rabbit hole to self-identify as a panromantic gray-asexual genderfluid demiboy or whatever. (And Tony Stark, if he even knew what demisexuality was, would probably just make fun of it anyways, lmao.)

Not a particular line, but this one author writes one half of my OTP calling the other "baby" a lot. Unless it's being said to a toddler or by a gangster's moll, "baby" is an insta-turnoff for me. This author also basically has a helpless woobie kink, so the combo sometimes edges toward infantilization, which goes right past turnoff and into squick territory.

Not so much a line, but I hate in Death Note fandom when Light's name is "Japanized" into "Raito". Goddammit, his Japanese name is "Light". Yes, there would of course be Japanese phonology, but it's still officially "Light", especially in writing. At the very least, if you insist on "Raito", spell L's name as "Eru."

Anything that involves the line 'he/she/whatever laid boneless in bed'.

That fucking word 'boneless' takes me out every single time without fail.

Yeah. I was reading a Transformers G1 fic where the Autobots and Decepticons are in peace negotiations, and the Decepticons want their officers to have contractual relationships with BDSM undertones because that is how they do in this fic. Now it's hella world building, and about cultural sex differences (tactile vs pnp), and there's all this little cool stuff implied to be happening in the background (like on the moon where Elita-1 is so cool), there's sexual tension and abrupt tactile/pnp porn pretty often, and Jazz is the main character.

But then consent. Consent is a great thing, and actually a great theme for this fic! Right up until consent murders the pacing, and it becomes the "Endless Meeting and Lecture about Consent: The Epic Consent Just So We're Clear About Consent".

I wouldn't even click on a fic that mentions 'demisexual' in its tags/summary. A character self-referring as such? So out of there.

Lots of swearing during sex, when a character wouldn't swear or act in a crass manner.

Re: Lines that ruin a fic for you

It's the snowflake nomenclature that does it. If they'd had Tony saying something, like, off the top of my head, "I get the feeling Rogers is about as good with casual sex as he is with smartphones." or "He's the kind of guy who sends a valentine declaring his intentions; how confusing is that to get?" or "His type? I dunno, my grandmother maybe? Someone into hearts and flowers and... needlepoint or candle-dipping or something. Jarvis, make a note: there's a good candle-dipping joke in there, remind me to work on it later." then that could express the same idea without instantly ruining the fic.
