I've read The Sign of Four many times, and I still don't think it's obvious.

Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, OP. I ship them too, but I doubt that's where Sherlock is heading.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Read it several times. Not obvious. And I read and write ACD Holmes/Watson. I just don't need to pretend it's in the canon.

As for TJLC, you are going to be disappointed, sorry mate.

This attitude drives me nuts. It's not "obvious". It's a legitimate scholarly reading of the original stories, but there's no canonical textual evidence that would unambiguously suggest a non-platonic relationship between Holmes and Watson OR EVEN imply a possibility of a non-platonic relationship more strongly than it implies a purely platonic one.

It's not "crazy". Neither is it "obvious". These aren't the only two options when we are talking different interpretations of a literary text, goddamnit. I wish more people understood that.

I've read The Sign of Four (recently) and have no idea what you're referring to.

Also, they are not going that way in Sherlock. Absolutely will not happen, nor was it ever canon in ACD.

I ship Johnlock but I have enough sense to realize this.

I don't really agree but I should really reread Sign of Four anyway, it's been a while. Thanks for the reminder, OP!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the show would be much better if it did go that way, but I don't see that happening.

Unless Korra paved the way for surprise gay endings, which would be awesome, but nonetheless, it's unlikely.

I agree with you that Sign of Four is one of the shippiest parts of canon, so there's that.

As to Johnlock - LMAO never in a million years, Arthur Conan Doyle coming back from the grave and shouting THEY'RE AS GAY AS OSCAR WILDE, DR. SIXTEEN-WIVES WATSON POSSIBLY EVEN GAYER is more likely than that.

We all are saying you are hoping beyond hope, OP. Maybe you are delusional.

But, years later, after John and Sherlock walk into the light holding hands and staring lovingly into each other's eyes, someone's gonna link to this thread and say "LOOK AT ALL THESE FOOLS WHO BELIEVED JOHNLOCK WASN'T END GAME. GUESS WHO IS LAUGHING NOW?"

Keep on keeping on, OP. There's always hope.

From the denouement to The Sign of [the] Four:

"Because you are within my reach again," I [Watson] said, taking her hand. She did not withdraw it. "Because I love you, Mary, as truly as ever a man loved a woman. Because this treasure, these riches, sealed my lips. Now that they are gone I can tell you how I love you. That is why I said, 'Thank God.'"

"Then I say, 'Thank God,' too," she whispered, as I drew her to my side. Whoever had lost a treasure, I knew that night that I had gained one.

...To me that does not scream Holmes/Watson slash. Sorry.

As someone who is fascinated by Sherlock and John's fucked up friendship and ships it hard, I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don't personally feel it would be OOC for them to go there, but I also don't think it will ever happen. TPTB will be content to joke about it and hint at it but never actually go anywhere with it.

And I'm okay with that honestly, because I do like Mary, and I want John to be happy one way or another; I bet (at least) half the ships I like are non-canon, so I'm used to it by now.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* It's only "obvious" if you:

* are completely ignorant of the social context
* have major slash goggles on for everything

Look, ship Holmes/Watson till the cows come home, but it's not canon. And that's okay, honest! Most ships aren't canon! It's only when you insist your non-canon ship is canon because your wishful thinking causes you to wildly misinterpret the text that people think you're an idiot. You don't have to justify your favorite ships by insisting it's canon, silly.

I'd like the see more queer representation as much as the next QUILTBAG person, but from a Doylist perspective I doubt very much that Steven Moffat is going to make his self-insert character gay/bi. (Or ace, for that matter.)

I can't wait until next season and they kill Mary like everyone's speculating to forever bait JohnLock. I'll know they'll never give the fans JohnLock, but the tears of the JohnLock haters will be delicious.
