You don't need to be on Tumblr to hear about Stephen Fry. The fact that he has just left Instagram was literally a front page story on the Guardian yesterday. And dumb things he's said (like about women not wanting sex because they don't go cottaging) are publicised to a similar extent.

Having looked at some of his comments, I'd definitely say they're sexist but I don't know that they're due to hating women so much as they are out of ignorance. The man is gay so he's never been in a romantic relationship with women. It seems like he's just speaking as someone whose understanding of women on this level comes from other men and pop culture, which is heavily biased/incorrect in so many ways.

I get the feeling this is the case. I mean, I once heard him say something along the lines of: when I was born, I took one look at my mother's vagina, and knew I never wanted to be near one again" (he said this as a joke, btw). And, I can see ow that attitude can be perceived as sexist - but it also seems to be consistent with someone who is just very very gay. I actually know two gay guys like that - one is actually uncomfortable around female lingerie, he other is grossed out by straight sex. (I can't even be mad, because I swear it's hilarious).

But yeah, I sort of get that same vibe from Fry. Sort of a "girls are yucky" in the sense an 7-year-old would have.

Fry's comments about women only putting up with sex for relationships IS rather sexist and judgmental.

I don't think he hates women or anything, but I think it's likely he's only talked to heterosexual men about het relationships and thus only heard their problems with relationships, instead of the women's perspectives.

I'll always love him in Blackadder and Fry & Laurie (and as Oscar Wilde), but he's slowly sunk in my estimation, mostly due to sexism and other forms of oblivious. Wouldn't bother me as much if people didn't think he was the epitome of intelligence and wisdom!

I used to love his acting. IMO, he's never really turned in a bad performance and...I soooo wish he'd stuck to that. On the other hand, once I knew about the things about him I don't agree with and/or like, it started looking like those things were everywhere in his performances.

have heard about his sexism, but more than that, he has a lot of other flaws (like people said, smugness and etc) that make me really not like him anymore. He's following some pretty typical patterns, like there oughta be a Bingo card you could fill in and the only reason you wouldn't win is because he's also gay and of Jewish descent.

It's 2015, the fact that someone is openly gay is no longer a reason to ignore and excuse their personality flaws and/or annoying opinions.
