I like them too. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ones are the best.

In some cases I can appreciate what they're trying to do. My issue is that they often send the wrong messages. Like when a character will become anorexic so she'll be prettier, and after she's told "you're great the way you are," she's fine. That is not how eating disorders work. And so those kinds of episodes end up doing more harm than good, because they promote myths, not facts.

Yeah, Fresh Prince actually did them fairly well a lot of them time. The episode where Carlton got a gun for protection after Will got shot actually managed to be poignant and touching even if it was a bit heavy handed

Haha, I remember that episode. My favorite "very special" type thing was that Lifetime movie, She's Too Young, all about teens getting syphilis. It never fails to make me laugh.

What about that episode of Diff'rent Strokes with the pedophile? That was the creepiest shit I've ever fucking seen.

A lot of us like them too! Just look at how many of us watched Degrassi. And even watching that show which is a very special episode every week, I love watching the extra Very Special issue ones.

YES. Someone reminded me the other day about the episode where Sean joins a cult and was like "WOW YES THAT HAPPENED ON A COMEDY SITCOM ABOUT TEENAGE BOYS."

Boy Meets World was such a weird show. 90% of it was just a typical teenage sitcom, and then the other 10% had some of the most riveting and memorable scenes I've ever watched/read in any fiction ever, especially a lot of the Corey & Shawn stuff.

Text: I would never admit it to anyone, but the "very special" episodes of sitcoms are always among my top favorite episodes, the more serious and dark, the better.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry but I hate those types of episodes. I think comedy can have *some* drama but in general that is not what I go to comedy for.

And as an anon said upthread, those episodes can often send the wrong message and really over simplify a real issue (because how do you deal with a real issue in a 30 minute sitcom? especially when the characters don't even remember it occurred in the next episode?)

I liked the ones on Growing Pains.

I've rarely met a VSE I didnt like. Whether that's Shawn not liking has myself when he drinks (or any of his other myriad issues), Jessie being SO SCARED, Zack and Slater unable to talk to their dads, Will's dad not wanting him, Will getting shot, Carlton's accidental high or Sandy dying after everything looked OK, they're all favorites of mine.

I always had a soft spot for the Dinosaurs VSE about drugs, where at the end Robbie walks offstage and tells the audience that we shouldn't do drugs so that TV shows will stop making Very Special Episodes.

When done right, they can be very good and add depth to characters.

God, remember that episode of "All in the Family" where Edith was almost raped?

I cried so hard watching that episode.

Generally the Very Special episodes were the ones I missed. They were way too cheesy, way too much second-hand embarrassment. I Could Not Hang. Dammit, I am watching a silly little sitcom for the sole reason of ogling the utter shit out of Rider Strong; do NOT come at me with a moral story right now. Gah, just let me eye-fark and be on with my night. Sheesh.

That said... even dressed as a girl he was still hawt. Even though I was rather irked that I had the same freakin' little velvet dress, in black, and he was way better looking in it than I could ever be. Hawt.
