Vegetarianism
(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)Then I discovered that in the natural world, even herbivores are actuall opportunistic omnivores, and that just makes it work.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 10:08 am (UTC)(link)I mean, your argument is really weird. My cat will eat anything off my plate if she thinks I'm not looking, including sweets and vegetables. Does that mean they are part of her diet? No. My dog literally eats garbage and shit, does that make him an opportunistic shit eater? no. Animals will eat anything when the urge strikes them, it doesn't somehow make it a balanced part of their diet.
don't worry Herpys I got this one for you
(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)Those links you posted are of no consequence. You are not an animal, you are a human being and therefore scum, and if you want to be a better class of creature you'll think twice before playing your part in the death industry.

I say we worship at the alter of our consumerism with self-aware joy and reverence. The death industry is good. The death industry is, paradoxically how we experience life! You know why humans can distinguish themselves above the other animals? WE ARE SO FUCKING GOOD AT KILLING THINGS. THIS IS WHY THE MEAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT CAN SATISFY THE NEED IN THE STOMACH. BECAUSE THE STOMACH KNOWS THIS MEAL WAS PURCHASED WITH BLOOD AND IT ALWAYS TASTES BETTER IF YOU PAY FOR IT.

Of course, I kinda fell off the wagon hard for about the same reasons as you. At most, I have to have a little bit of chicken every once in a while. But if I had the choice/resources/money (because vegetarian frozen meals and stuff aren't exactly cheap), I'd probably go back to being a vegetarian again for the health benefits. (Otherwise, when it comes to meat/fish, I at least try to find out if it was made in humane-as-possible environments, i.e. free-range chickens and cows, that sort of thing)
Re: Vegetarianism
(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)Now, that said, "opportunistic omnivores" does not mean eating meat 3X a day with meat snacks in between, and a side order of meat. It means eating a MOSTLY plant-based diet, with a little bit of meat mixed in, and other healthy protein sources to top you up.
Note I said healthy protein sources.
So, not the jar of Skippy, but the jar of peanut butter that has literally one ingredient listed: Peanuts. (Okay, some have salt as well, but check the sodium to see how excessive it is.) A tablespoon a day, keeps colds and flus away.
So, not the quorn or the tofurkey or the fake burgers (exception to be made for portobello mushroom cap burgers because those are just awesome) but a couple of free range beef sliders, as a treat, one meal out of every five? Go for it! Instead of frying up a pan of sausages for your breakfast, have two, (any variety you like) with a well-rounded meal balanced out by, frex., broccoli salad, or roasted cauliflower, something substantial like that.
If you're vegetarian and not vegan, you also have the option to avail yourself of the complete protein available in eggs. As in, eat all the eggs, in every way possible (example: add one egg yolk to your oatmeal cooked in almond milk and it turns out like custard), and you're generally good, for your complex protein sources. Eggs are pretty much the staple protein source for 99% of the omnivores on the planet.
I'm lactose-intolerant, so dairy milk is out of the question for me, but if your stomach doesn't hate you, one cup a day will help with upping your protein intake, especially if you buy the higher-fat-content milk, 3% or higher.

Re: Vegetarianism
That said, I have no problems existing on an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet now but I sure did before I figured out what supplements I needed to take.
Re: Vegetarianism
Since I was on a meal plan, I was keeping track of my protein, and I had blood tests done on iron and B12 and nothing was amiss. (There was in D, but that's because it was fucking winter. EVERYONE gets D deficiency here in winter.) Still got sick. I don't know WHAT it was I was missing, and whatever it is, I don't need much of it, but I still need it.

Re: Vegetarianism
(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 10:04 am (UTC)(link)It doesn't work for everyone, but to be honest, I don't think being vegetarian for just a week or two is a good account of how you'll feel being vegetarian. Your body has to adjust, any huge change in diet and it's going to be rough at the beginning. You just have to make sure you're getting protein from other sources. But again, if it doesn't work for your body, it doesn't work for your body.
It really works for me, though. Best dietary decision of my life, along with giving up pop.
