Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I can't be a veggie. I tried. No matter how much veg I eat, or what sort, it just does not make me feel full. As soon as I add a little meat, that is when I feel like I've had a substantial meal. Even when I use nutloaf or quorn or tofu, it still doesn't register as meat.

Then I discovered that in the natural world, even herbivores are actuall opportunistic omnivores, and that just makes it work.

I saw robins picking at chicken bones at the bus stop the other day. I know robins eat bugs, but still, it creeped me the fuck out.

It's not about how much you eat, it's what, IME. I've had a lot of luck with cheese and yogurt. Fat and protein make you feel full. A stomach full of fiber-carbs won't...

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Tried the fool myself with cheese but without meat I'm not full. But if even deer like to munch down on a bit of meat, then I guess there is no such thing as a good veggie diet.

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes if there isn't a good veggie diet for you, then there just isn't a good veggie diet for you. We're all built differently. Good luck with whatever you end up doing, health is most important after all :)

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I can't do a meatless diet without losing a lot of weight and getting really sick. Not everyone's body can handle being a vegan or even a vegetarian.

Re: Vegetarianism

I'm kind of getting the feel, OP, that you made this thread as a subtle (?) jab at vegetarianism, not actually to relate any personal anecdote.

I mean, your argument is really weird. My cat will eat anything off my plate if she thinks I'm not looking, including sweets and vegetables. Does that mean they are part of her diet? No. My dog literally eats garbage and shit, does that make him an opportunistic shit eater? no. Animals will eat anything when the urge strikes them, it doesn't somehow make it a balanced part of their diet.

don't worry Herpys I got this one for you

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
You are a terrible person and you should be ashamed. The act of eating meat is the height of human selfishness.

Those links you posted are of no consequence. You are not an animal, you are a human being and therefore scum, and if you want to be a better class of creature you'll think twice before playing your part in the death industry.

Hey just because I get off on sluaghterhouse porn while eating is no reason to accuse me of being part of a death industry. That I work for lockheed is what makes me part of a death industry.

I don't think I've done anything to offend the International Society on Infant Studies to the degree they'd want to bomb me.

We are scum you fool. Scum! You admit as much. But then you drift, from the words of a prophet to that of a ranting lunatic. A lunatic in need of a bacon cheeseburger. Who says we want to rise from the muck. THE MUCK IS WHERE THE TASTY GREASE IS.

I say we worship at the alter of our consumerism with self-aware joy and reverence. The death industry is good. The death industry is, paradoxically how we experience life! You know why humans can distinguish themselves above the other animals? WE ARE SO FUCKING GOOD AT KILLING THINGS. THIS IS WHY THE MEAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT CAN SATISFY THE NEED IN THE STOMACH. BECAUSE THE STOMACH KNOWS THIS MEAL WAS PURCHASED WITH BLOOD AND IT ALWAYS TASTES BETTER IF YOU PAY FOR IT.

I did a vegetarian diet for Lent a couple years back. I'll admit, it was difficult (I worked in the School Kitchen from Hell at the time, so yes, there was some temptation, haha but I actually felt really, really good at the end. When I went to go get some blood tests done after Easter, my doctor -who didn't know I went on veg diet at the time- was so impressed with my results, he told me to 'keep doing whatever it is I was doing'.

Of course, I kinda fell off the wagon hard for about the same reasons as you. At most, I have to have a little bit of chicken every once in a while. But if I had the choice/resources/money (because vegetarian frozen meals and stuff aren't exactly cheap), I'd probably go back to being a vegetarian again for the health benefits. (Otherwise, when it comes to meat/fish, I at least try to find out if it was made in humane-as-possible environments, i.e. free-range chickens and cows, that sort of thing)

Re: Vegetarianism

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it's not going to register as meat, because it's not meat. There are amino acids and B12 complexes that you just aren't going to get out of plants or the uber-over-processed "fake meats" that passes for veg fare, these days.

Now, that said, "opportunistic omnivores" does not mean eating meat 3X a day with meat snacks in between, and a side order of meat. It means eating a MOSTLY plant-based diet, with a little bit of meat mixed in, and other healthy protein sources to top you up.

Note I said healthy protein sources.

So, not the jar of Skippy, but the jar of peanut butter that has literally one ingredient listed: Peanuts. (Okay, some have salt as well, but check the sodium to see how excessive it is.) A tablespoon a day, keeps colds and flus away.

So, not the quorn or the tofurkey or the fake burgers (exception to be made for portobello mushroom cap burgers because those are just awesome) but a couple of free range beef sliders, as a treat, one meal out of every five? Go for it! Instead of frying up a pan of sausages for your breakfast, have two, (any variety you like) with a well-rounded meal balanced out by, frex., broccoli salad, or roasted cauliflower, something substantial like that.

If you're vegetarian and not vegan, you also have the option to avail yourself of the complete protein available in eggs. As in, eat all the eggs, in every way possible (example: add one egg yolk to your oatmeal cooked in almond milk and it turns out like custard), and you're generally good, for your complex protein sources. Eggs are pretty much the staple protein source for 99% of the omnivores on the planet.

I'm lactose-intolerant, so dairy milk is out of the question for me, but if your stomach doesn't hate you, one cup a day will help with upping your protein intake, especially if you buy the higher-fat-content milk, 3% or higher.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
...okay why are bird "experts" horrified to see birds eating meat? 99% of commercially-sold birdseed is formulated with suet/tallow...i.e., BEEF FAT.

Re: Vegetarianism

yeah, I don't really understand why anyone would be surprised by it. I spent a lot of time on my grandparent's farm, and I saw chickens eat other chickens (ones who had died for some reason or another) on several occasions. some of my cousins also thought it was amusing to feed them mcnuggets and they never hesitated to eat it. they don't really give a shit

I saw a farm chicken attack a cat once, pulled out one of the cat's eyes too. Really made a mess of it. The cat was going nuts trying to kill the chicken, then trying to get away from it, but the chicken was too quick and too aggressive. It really made a mess of the cat's face and it's back legs. Chickens might look stupid, but they can fuck you up if they get it into their minds to do it. It wasn't even a rooster, just a regular layer.

Enh some folks tolerate it better than others. I can feel full without meat (and in fact, eating meat with every meal would make me feel really gross really fast) but I do need tiny snippets of meat periodically or I get sick.

Noodles, veg, and yogurt FOREVAR.

It's pretty tricky for me because I don't have a proper colon. I think digestive capacity really counts for a lot when you're trying to make a plant-based diet work. I pretty much couldn't get away without eating eggs and dairy, and I still use iron, B6/12, and D supplements just to keep my health optimum.

That said, I have no problems existing on an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet now but I sure did before I figured out what supplements I needed to take.

Oh, I wouldn't DARE try veganism. That'd just go horribly wrong so fast. (Also, Mac would kill me.)

Since I was on a meal plan, I was keeping track of my protein, and I had blood tests done on iron and B12 and nothing was amiss. (There was in D, but that's because it was fucking winter. EVERYONE gets D deficiency here in winter.) Still got sick. I don't know WHAT it was I was missing, and whatever it is, I don't need much of it, but I still need it.

Re: Vegetarianism

Since becoming vegetarian I've never felt better. I always feel more awake and alert, I've lost (bad) weight and still feel like I have more energy, and not to mention I feel more ethical about my decision not to eat meat.

It doesn't work for everyone, but to be honest, I don't think being vegetarian for just a week or two is a good account of how you'll feel being vegetarian. Your body has to adjust, any huge change in diet and it's going to be rough at the beginning. You just have to make sure you're getting protein from other sources. But again, if it doesn't work for your body, it doesn't work for your body.

It really works for me, though. Best dietary decision of my life, along with giving up pop.
