19. You know, the same could be said of any series generally aimed at children that has young teens/kids as the heroes, though. Digimon's a good one for that, too. Like, everything, OOC AND underaged NC-17.

33. I've been wondering something along those lines lately as well...

YES.

Neil Gaiman/Dave McKean's MirrorMask was inspired by Labyrinth, and guess what? In that one, HOGGLE GETS THE GIRL.

I've written NC-17 of two of the characters who were 14 and 17 for this fandom. And yeah, in some states, they're underage. But they're teenagers. Teenagers have sex. Some of them wait until they're legal, some of them get too curious before that. Deal with it.

It sounds to me like you're just bothered by the idea of kids having sex more than anything else. I've seen far, far worse stuff in other fandoms.

Re: 19

[identity profile] agawa-jean.livejournal.com 2008-01-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd have to place this under the verdict of "don't like it, don't read it". And kudos - teenagers do have sex. (Well, some of them.)

TAKE THAT SUGARY SWEET DEPICTIONS OF RICH ALL-AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOLS. D:

[identity profile] herosquad.livejournal.com 2008-01-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
39. There is a third kind, you know. You see, once upon a time, there was a brilliant little Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd that opened in 2005. And as with all brilliant shows, it had a small but very committed fanbase, commonly referred to as the 'Sweeneyboppers,' or the 'Hot Toddies' (a name which was actually given to us by Donna Lynne Champlin, the freaking amazing woman who played Pirelli). We were close. Really close. Like, we made some of our best friends through the fandom, people we're still extremely close with despite the fact that the production closed in September of 2006, just a couple months shy of a year run. We had countless inside jokes, we wrote long, detailed, weepy posts about our experiences with the show, we befriended the cast and were invited to their solo gigs and and and... it was an amazing time.

Some of us liked the film, and some of us didn't. But for the Hot Toddies, the fact that we will always prefer the production that brought us together doesn't mark us as "theatre elitists." It may or may not be the best interpretation of Sondheim's work, but for us, it doesn't matter either way. The fact that the film exists and the work has been preserved is pretty much enough - Angela, Patti, and Helena are apples, oranges, and pears. If you prefer pears to apples or oranges to pears, that's your call - we're not saying that pears are a lesser fruit, just that oranges are our favorites.

And just for the record:

Image

from [livejournal.com profile] broadwaysecrets the week the revival closed. That should show you how close we were.

16. You lose. Just...seriously. There's this thing that fans of something old and classic have--if anything occurs that makes it mainstream or popular, no one ever assumes that maybe the people getting into it just because it's mainstream and popular may well actually look into it beyond that. Fans tend to be nerds. Oodles of New Doctor Who fans devour the classic series because they loved the shiny new one so much. Plenty of people read up on and actually researched pirates because of PotC. And, I promise you, plenty of Sweeny Todd fans will go on to discover the joys of Sondhiem. Not all. But a lot. Stop assuming that new fans=bandwagoners. Maybe people like things because they're good and they're just now being brought to their attention.

19. Agreed. And I hate seeign freaking author asides in fic. I kind of want to smack everyone who ever writes something like "Zuko drew his sword(oh man, isn't it hot when he does that!)" or whatever.

SO MUCH WIN. Just because I had never heard of the musical before the film came out doesn't mean that I'm a worse fan for liking the movie. Seriously, people need to stop being so uptight, and just appreciate that things like the movie are giving more people the chance to see the wonderful thing that they themselves fell in love with.

Oh, and I second the Who thing.

[identity profile] levikitty.livejournal.com 2008-01-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
5. I love Luigi to death. He's my favorite Mario character.

But you are right. He is so terribly overrated it hurts.

I can't believe the number of Mario fanfics I've seen where Luigi for whatever reason hates his brother, kills Mario, etc. They're usually written by people with such Luigi fanaticism that they take everything that makes Luigi lovable and throw it out the window.

Luigi has been so overrated to the point that people make him into a homicidal psychopath stu just because they want him to be the star, and not Mario. Even though Luigi makes it clear multiple times in the games that he doesn't want the spotlight. And it makes me sad. D:

26. The only reason multi-chapter fics seem more popular is because there's something to keep fans coming back, and that because they get regularly updated, they're circulated more and have longer to get a larger following.

This "OMG DRABBLES >>>>>>> CHAPTER FICS" crusade is really getting out of proportion.
Edited 2008-01-19 00:49 (UTC)

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2008-01-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)

13. I haven't finished the game yet, so I don't really know all that much about him, but it totally boggled me how he shows up, makes this completely awesome speech, and then all the characters are like, "OH MY GOD, HE'S SO EVIL. LET'S GO ON EPIC QUESTS TO DO THINGS TO PREVENT HIS EVIL. EVIL EVIL EVIL." It kinda seemed to come out of nowhere. So yeah, Vayne = pretty hardcore as far as I can tell.

26. Drabbles are awesome. Personally, the only things I can write Huge Epic Stuff for are episodic series like Batman, where you can mess around with fan-episodes and all that. I think the whole point of fanfic is to experiment with things that weren't in the original and drabbles/vignettes/one-shots are really good ways of doing that.
