Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

or anything fandom related you want to vent.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

OP here are a couple of mine.

1. People who say they stop watching a show because they are tired of characters getting killed, but continue to watch other shows that tend to even kill more characters. Like a person stops watching Walking Dead because of the deaths but continues to watch Game of Thrones.

2. People who only start watching a show because of a certain ship becoming canon. For example some Korrasami shippers. I know a few who have never watched the first series with Aang because they were not into the premise or genre but boom once Korrasami was canon they watched LoK. I understand wanting representation, but forcing yourself to watch a series that you are not certain you are going to like for a pairing just makes me go WTF.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes you think they're forcing themselves? I lost interest in LoK after the first season, but Korrasami becoming canon genuinely brought my interest back. People get interested in things for all kinds of reasons you don't need to understand to accept that they're interested.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
What? I freaking buy comic books I'm not sure I'm going to like. I can give a TV series a shot.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
1. I think you're assuming that a person's level of engagement with one show is automatically going to be the same for another. Maybe killing off characters in one show is far more of an emotional dealbreaker than it would be for something else.

2. ...don't people start watching anything without a guarantee they're going to like it? I've started watching about a dozen shows this year alone, for a variety of reasons. I've liked maybe two of them. I wasn't forcing myself; I was watching to see if the hype/reviews/rec/actor/whatever that piqued my interest would mean I enjoyed the show.

Yeah I agree with one. I found it funny how a lot of people I knew in this one community are pissing themselves over last nights Supernatural death, crying about how all the SPN ladies get ganked...yet they love Game of Thrones and have very limited critique for what that show does for it's leading ladies.

Why is there never any unrequited love in fanfiction?

It just seems like it doesn't exist.

I mean, at the very least, you would think incompatible orientations might occasionally be a problem

I guess I just want more unrequited love fics.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-07 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Because for the most part fanfic are fantasies people have and enjoy. And most people don't enjoy loving someone and not being loved back.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious, do you mean fics where the love stays unrequited? Or just unrequited love in general? Because in my experience there's a lot of the latter.

I think the above anon might be onto something in that often people go to fanfic for enjoyment and reading unrequited love might be a bit of a downer. Of course there's angst ahoy in fanfic, and all kinds of fucked up torture and abuse that people enjoy too, but maybe the unrequited stuff feels more personal because I think to some extent, most people can relate to it. So it might hit close to home?

And so often when people do write about their favorite characters getting hurt, there's still a happy ending, so... Maybe it's too depressing.

There are a few pairings I'm REALLY into this with, but it doesn't seem to be written.

I think it would be really interesting to have a slash fic in which one of the character just really, honestly, inescapably was not romantically in love with the other guy at all. No convenient coming around later on, no realization that he was just repressed or in denial.

I think it would just be really interesting to see that old slash trope (which I really love btw) -- one guy being so sure that his friend is straight and would never want to have sex with him, and then his feelings are revealed and he prepares to get his heart crushed...and actually his friend returns his feelings! -- subverted so that his fears were actually correct. It seems like such fascinating angst, I wish it was more common. The only ones I've seen are ones where the straight guy doesn't really like the non-straight one though, rather than the straight guy really really loving the non-straight guy, but just not romantically.

I've read a few unrequited love fics, actually. I'm only into it with certain ships, though.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Having written a 20k word (RPS) fic in which the love stayed unrequited, I'm inclined to say it's trickier to write and keep the audience engaged. I put a lot of effort into my story and received very little response even though it was written for a big bang. (I will admit the pairing I wrote about is so rare that there are only two people I know of who have even attempted fic, and that figure includes me.) While the idea of characters missing an opportunity to change is a legitimate way to approach the creation of a story arc, most readers aren't down with that. In writing, it can go horribly wrong if the author hasn't gained enough experience to know how to do things like balance the amount of details in descriptions. It's a tough situation.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

As others have suggested, it's probably because the audience for that particular scenario is pretty limited. If you clearly label a fic as unrequited without the happy ending, your readership won't be especially high (if that matters to you), and if you decide not to make it clear that the ship will not be together at the end of the fic, then that's asking for trouble. For better or worse, the majority expectation in shippy fic is that the ship winds up together. That's the fantasy, that's the thing a lot of shippers expect fandom to fix from the original canon.

Another aspect of the trope, at least in my experience with admittedly crappy fandoms, is that it tends to get trotted out as a form of character bashing. The hated character will spend a fic pining over their love interest only to watch them stroll into to sunset with the character the author actually likes. Another spin on that is that if you do write an unrequited fic with the best intentions, haters of that character will take it as some kind of manifesto to "prove" that the ship isn't meant to be together.

Horrible characters being excused because they had tragic childhoods or supposedly tragic childhoods.

Re: Fandom Gripes Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
My gripe is people saying this happens when it doesn't. Because they're confusing "being excused" with "being liked" or "being felt sorry for."

Not a gripe, but...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking about how when I was watching Frozen, Do You Want to Build a Snowman had me in tears. Then I realized it was making me think of my own older sister, who went from being one of my best friends to distancing herself.

(In her case, she'd been in a bad relationship, and I think she needed to... rediscover herself or something. We're closer now, but it was hard, and I think Anna's feelings of abandonment just hit me.)

This might be the buggiest runthrough of Fallout 1 I've had in years. Save corruption, quest issues, the whole bit.

Starting to think I probably should have gone with a pure-fixes install of FIXT and avoided the restored content.

I can't stand the need in fandom to force things to be black and white. This comes in multiple forms:

1. Removing complexities from characters and making them wholly evil or wholly good.
2. Making a character you hate completely evil and a character you love completely good.
3. Calling a character horrible for a few mistakes and ignoring all the good parts of them. Or calling an evil character good just because of a few redeeming features.

I can't help but be a little bothered by people who complain to fan artists (and fan fic writers, to an extent) the moment they stop drawing/writing X series and/or Y pairing. Even worse is when those types of people trash the new thing the artist/writer likes or make passive-aggressive statements, as if that's somehow going to convince the artist/writer to go back to it at the drop of a hat. Never understood that mindset.

Status of a gay ship, who top/bottom and other things like that. It's so dumb, it's the same ship so why must you harass people and call them names for it. The worst is the most recent wank in Sherlock fandom, I haven't seen a minute of Sherlock but ugh.

Also fandom's habit of reducing a queer character to their queerness. Everyone are sassy and aboard the angst train, especially gays and trans. All lesbians are sassy and snarky. Especially when they involve other characters whose personality they change completely just to fulfill their fantasy. The most annoying for me is in Homestuck fandom, they make a character who is close to the recent slash ship (which I actually ship) into their baby. The character is an adult who had been through war and has ptsd. Because he's of another species and act childish they make him a baby, I even see someone draw him in a baby carrier. It's insulting not just to the character but to the ship themselves.

More of a personal complaint than a pet peeve, but...

Dear fandom friends, I get that you identify really strongly with a lot of characters. I get that you really like those characters. But please, you don't have to magically gain a "kin" from every new thing you consume. I love you all dearly, but sometimes I would just like to tell you that you can like and identify with characters without claiming that you are them. And that you come off as really hypocritical for then shit talking other people for also being kin of the same characters.

I won't say anything though, because you're really good friends and I don't want to lose the friendship. I just wish you wouldn't go on about this so often.
