Double standards

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Which one aggravates you the most?

Re: Double standards

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Girls with height requirements for guys. Specifically the ones who are deeply against body-shaming or judgmental attitudes based on physical features. Classic "it's okay when I do it."

Re: Double standards

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it and I also hate that it gives other people ammo to fire back at body-acceptance by pointing out the hypocrites. Body-shaming is body-shaming.

A lot of women defend this by saying it's the one physical requirement they're "allowed" to have. Otherwise, women are shamed and berated for having physical preferences, because they're supposed to be the not-shallow ones who like guys for who they are and what they accomplish rather than what they look like. Height is the one socially acceptable physical feature women "can" want without facing judgement.

It's not like there's not some truth to that, too.

That said, you're going about it wrong: nobody actually sees this and/or cares. All they see is the hypocrisy of judging men for a physical feature they can't change while railing against being judged on your appearance.

I don't think it's body shaming to have preferences. I think it's body shaming to make people feel bad for having certain body types, but I don't like the idea that having a height requirement means you're shaming people. You shouldn't be required to date people you don't find attractive.

Men and boys and sexual abuse, especially when done by women. Like the story where a teacher had sex with her sixth grade student, and some people were applauding the boy like he hadn't just been raped by an adult.

Re: Double standards

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That one really gets to me, especially because there are so many women who get away with molesting children and committing sexual assault just because everyone assumes they can't or won't do it.

Also what pisses me off is there's a contingent of feminists who refuse to believe that women can do those kinds of things. They believe only men can do them, and if a woman does it, it's only ever because she's under the influence of a man. Which is insulting as hell, because first of all, okay, women aren't fully fledged people, then? They're perfect goddesses? Isn't that pedestal crap one of the things about patriarchy we're trying to fight? And what's more, women are so weak-minded that a man can get them to do anything? Like, seriously, guys, that's what you're implying, so great job with your pro-womannness.

Re: Double standards

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Even worse because many of those people were women, who you would think would be a bit more sensitive.

I saw a post where these women on Tumblr (which again, should be sensitive times a billion) were applauding this woman for raping a man at gunpoint.

Anyone who wants the right to state their opinion by denying others the right to state theirs.

On the minor end of the scale you see it in fandom where people feel the need to make endless posts about how whoever they hate that week needs to shut up and keep their opinions to themselves, all the while hilariously not realizing that they're being raging hypocrites.

Re: Double standards

This one's a fandom double standard:

I hate how a female character being black automatically means you can't criticize how her romance is written.

Example:

I dislike how Natasha/Bruce and Uhura/Spock were written

They have the same issues for me:

1. They both come out of nowhere with no real build-up
2. Both female characters don't get a plotline of their own and instead end up subsumed in the male's story

With Natasha, LOTS of people will agree with me. Yet if I present the same argument for Uhura, I get accused of being racist and not wanting her near my "white fave."

I'm not saying black women shouldn't enjoy the romance (heck, anyone can -- love what you love) and I get that the historical context is different for black and white women but...

Uhura being black doesn't make the romance better written. Being black doesn't automatically make a character more interesting, especially in a setting like Star Trek which takes place in a post-racial world so they can't even make an interesting plotline from it (for example, by comparing the discrimination Spock faces to that Uhura would face).

Lady teachers sleeping with underage boy students = "Man, what a lucky kid! Where were these teacher when I was a kid?"

Guy teachers sleeping with underage girl students = "Predator. Pervert. Sex offender!"

I hate that. There are teachers who prey on young boys and yet, they get a pass because they are women and no one sees the boys as victims. But they are.

That it's somehow more acceptable or understandable to commit crimes when you have grown up in poverty or without the same possibilities as someone else. Fuck that. Lack of options doesn't make anyone less morally culpable.

Pretty much ANYTHING involving rape. Bonus points if it involves incest or kids.

I've been working my way through a five-hundred page bookslab about myths regarding child sexual abuse and how it's affected court cases. Thank god it is dry and dense and incredibly boring; otherwise I don't think I could get through it. As it is, I have to put it down every few pages and go play with the cat, or take a walk, or it wrecks my mood ALL FUCKING DAY.
