I think both mods are stupid to get mad over. And all the wank really turned me off from playing the games.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. The only time I ever hear about this game is when people are complaining about the wanky fans. That alone's pretty much cemented in my mind that this game isn't for me, haha.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Judgment time: Media fandom should not stop you from consuming media. If something looks like fun to play/watch/read then do so. If the fandom is bad then don't participate in it. Easy as that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think either is really bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind if people think they're equally good or equally bad

It's the people who go one is terrible but the other isn't that I'm wary of

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the fact they exist so much as I'm just so sick of the people whining about LIs. They made all the LIs bisexual in DA2, people whined that they're "playersexual" (which is one of the absolute stupidest words I've ever heard) and treated the devs like shit because of it. They give each individual character their own sexualality, suddenly everyone has Yggdrasil up their ass about the fact they can't fuck everyone.

God help the devs if they actually do code polyamory into the games in the future, because I'm pretty sure that's how WWIII will start.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The ammount of hate poor Sebastian gets for being a female-only LI, not to mention chaste is pretty ridiculous. So... All the people want is to boink whoever? Are their lives just that boring?

Also a lot of the whining has come from deciding who you want to romance before LIs were even announced. Like it's somewhat unfair that their Inquisitor cannot romance Vivienne, even if that was never an option?

Most of the time there's talk about romanceable and non-romanceable characters all I hear is "waah, waah, I am entitled to fuck everyone and anyone, waah, waah".

I've heard polyamory would be pretty difficult to code. I hope there won't be polyamorous relationships available, purely because of the wank. Maybe put in some NPCs, that would be cool?

That's because you're a privileged ass hole.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it is not. Heterosexuality is not diminished, oppressed, erased or scorned. That's like saying the rare time when Hollywood casts a non-white person as a "white" character (like Nick Fury in Avengers, iirc), that's just as offensive as casting white people to play the protagonists of Avatar the Last Airbender.

...Also, making characters in an RPG bi so they'll potentially sleep with you isn't offensive at all. If you somehow installed a mod that erases Dorian's gay storyline completely and removed any same-sex reference in the game, we might be talking, but I'd happily install mods that allow me to sleep with everyone possible, I did it for Origins, and slept with everyone in DA2, it's my honorable tradition to fuck them all.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't know that fan mods diminished, oppressed, erased and scorned homosexuality in real life. Good to know!

Yeah. The mods existing doesn't change the untouched canon, so I don't see the benefit in wasting time moaning about how folk play their game (or could be spent playing more games). Judge and roll your eyes, that's cool. But actively pissing, jfc just play games.

In a way I understand how a person could be upset about these mods, but honestly... I don't mind them.

In every fandom ever people write fic with non-canon couples, often 'changing' a characters sexuality to make their pairings happen, and I don't see how this is that different. Those people are altering their games to make this happen, so it doesn't effect anyone else (and it still isn't canon). I guess because of that I see it the same way I do fanfic?

Personally, I really wanted to romance Cass as a woman, but since that isn't possible (without mods, which require too much effort on my part and can mess with the game) I'll just romance her with a man. (Er...maybe. Hopefully, some day.) The mods don't interest me that much anyway because of what's missing (there's no dialogue for certain scenes, right? and I know the animations are off), but if someone else wants to use them that's fine.

See the worst part is I really don't care about either mod or the implications therein. What I cannot stand is people insisting one is okay and the other makes you trash. It's the same thing.

I don't think either mod is bad, the only way I'd have an issue with them was if they had the ability to affect other player's games but, they don't. So who cares?

(Frankly taking issue with both if fair enough tbh, it's people I've seen who hate one but love the other than make me want to smack my head against a desk).

I kinda agree. I mean, I recognize that there is a big and important difference on a societal level, but... erasing or changing an essential part of someone, anyone, just so you could sleep with them? That's skeevy as fuck, and it doesn't make a difference to me that "it's just a video game". I couldn't do it to Cassandra any more than I could do it to Dorian.

And they call me delusional.

They're not people, they're characters. They exist as a set of collaboratively created performances saved to disk and presented through a computer system. You change the computer system, you change the character.

See, what I keep reading on with these kinds of mods and the race changing mods is that, say you play the game through as is. Cool!! You loved the game as is!!

But then, you download the mods and you have now effectively turned it into an AU of sorts. If you write fic dealing with the AUish characters, and how that affects them, then I say cool. Or if you don't, I still say cool, cause it's only affecting YOU, the only player of that particular game, not anyone else.

Congratulations, you're wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Generally in society, het is presumed to be the default. So many people grow up thinking they have to be het, because that is what they're supposed to be, right? Then later in life they evaluate what they are actually attracted to. And they might be het, they might be bi, or they might be gay. So generally, I presume that if someone says they are gay, they've evaluated their sexuality and are pretty sure about that. Whereas if someone says they are straight, maybe they haven't fully evaluated it yet. Maybe they are, in fact, at least a little bit bi if they met the right person. And this is why I'll rarely have an issue with making a character bi, but I will always have an issue with making a gay person straight. Whether it is with mods, in fanfic, in headcanons, or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Even leaving aside any debates over ethical/social issues, modding Dorian bi just doesn't make any sense. He's the one character whose sexuality doesn't just exist in dialogue, but also has narrative backing and plays a significant role in his character arc. His (completely unavoidable, if you want to trigger the romance) personal quest is all about his father completely torpedoing everything he's ever claimed to believe in in order to stage a hideously unethical magical ritual to make Dorian willing to bang a woman, even knowing that it'd be more likely to burn out Dorian's brain than work as intended, for crying out loud.
