I just don't get why it absolutely has to be Idris Elba (other than the fact that he's just about the only black actor a lot of the people whining about diversity seem to know) - or a black guy in general. James Bond is a Brit, an ethnically Indian Bond would make much more sense if you want to diversify the role so badly.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
gdi now you made me want a Bond parody with Terry Crews

all these super high class spies being all "it can't possibly be that guy" then he busts in in an attack helicopter. it would be so beautiful

Idris Elba is British

I mean, I agree that it's weird that he's always the Black Fantasy Cast, and I agree that the push for YOU MUST CAST DIVERSELY is not something I agree with

but he is British

Well, Idris Elba is British. He does a fake American accent convincingly, but his actual accent is British.

For me, it's because he can really rock a tux and pull off the combination of sophistication and violent machismo that Bond requires. I really like Daniel Craig for the same reason and when I'm thinking about replacements, it's all about people who can look good at a fancy party, seduce anyone of any gender, and also convince me that they're ruthless enough to smash someone's head in with their bare hands.

An ethnically Indian Bond would make total sense too, though. I just have a hard time thinking of anyone of any ethnicity that would be better than Elba.

He's overrated as an actor, but the skin tone isn't the problem. Get a guy that can act the part, has the attitude and look fit, and I couldn't care less if he were green.

What about Adrian Lester, then? Or Michasha Armstrong, perhaps?

Or if you want someone who was originally a stage actor, maybe David Oyelowo?

Lots to pick from, if someone want a black James Bond.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Idris Elba but cannot see him as Bond. The only thing he's got going for him is that he is British. Then again, I don't like any of the front runner. Tom Hardy is a fine actor but I just can't see suave from him. Henry Cavill might be able to pull off suave but he is busy with Superman. Damien Lewis? Fuck no.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've gathered, "the frontrunners" are just speculations from people betting money on "who will the next James Bond be" and I don't see why the JB producers would give a fuck about them.

I know very little about this, but Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill are both front runners?

Not that I'm a massive Bond fan, but neither feel right to me. (Tom is an excellent actor so this is not anything personal.)

I do kind of think Idris would be a better fit for the role.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Did no one complain about Eartha Kitt? I heard something once about how they conspicuously stopped writing romantic/sexual tension between Catwoman and Batman when she was cast, so I had assumed there was some racism regarding her. (Not that I think this effects the black James Bond argument, I mean my god I should hope we've come further than they had in the 60s.)

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2015-09-13 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if there were explicit complaints, but it may have been a feeling that the show might just not get aired south of the Mason-Dixon Line if Batman actually, y'know, touched a black woman with romantic intent.

"I Spy" (the Bill Cosby/Robert Culp show) and "Star Trek" were actually not aired on some southern NBC affiliates because they showed nonwhite characters working as equals with whites.

Agreed.

Aside from the literal falseness of the statement "nobody complained", let's just be serious for a moment. In 1967, folks complained about this black woman on television.
2010 - Folks complain about Idris Elba playing Heimdall
2012 - Folks complained about a black actress playing a black character Rue in the Hunger Games.
2015 - Folks complained about a black actor playing Johnny Storm in Fantastic 4.

Honestly, I just don't get the appeal of Bond. Although, come to think of it, the idea of a very similar character but a woman is really intriguing and now I want to go find genderbent Bond fics if such a thing exists.

That being said, Idris Elba is awesome and I'd watch him in almost anything.

The main complaint I could see people raising (and in fact have done so, the author of the new Bond books included) is that Idris has a clear working class Hackney accent*.

He's a good actor, but that doesn't change the fact that it'd be pretty incongruous to have him play someone who's meant to be the stereotypical posh english gentleman. Of which there's plenty, Idris isn't the only black actor we've got, there are others probably better suited.

*The equivalent would be having a thick detroit slums accent and getting told to play the Beverly Hills aristocracy.

IMO Idris would make a better bond than the last two. Come at me.

I think people should wait to complain about casting...

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
until after someone has actually been cast and they actually see that someone in the role. Because if I had been alive when they cast Sean Connery for Bond, I would've been like, "Really? Him? That guy from Darby O'Gill and the Little People? Are you serious?"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That recent comment about Elba being "too street" to play Bond floored me. More "street" than Daniel Craig? (Mind you, this is the same fandom that had a stroke over a blond Bond, so I don't know why I'm surprised they don't like the idea of a black Bond.)

He's overrated. Bond isn't the most complex material but I just don't see him blowing me away in the role. But everyone can name two black actors that haven't been in Marvel so he just comes up for every fancast ever.
rbhudson: (Default)

[personal profile] rbhudson 2015-09-14 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! God forbid there are more parts for non-white actors

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the idea, but I was also annoyed that they cast someone blonde last time around.

I like that the Bond films never deliberately address whether he's supposed to be the same person or not. As long as you keep actors who look sufficiently similar, then it can be either one. Casting someone who the audience can't suspend disbelief into thinking is the same person as the others forces the series to come down on one side or the other.

A black female Doctor, on the other hand: bring that on, ASAP.

I can see a problem with it: he's stated point blank that he doesn't want the part.
