I had a similar experience with a friend and Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a few years. I felt so bad about not being able to get into it.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had this experience with several friends and Attack on Titan. I mean, I get why they like it but I really can't stand it. I can't. If anything, reading the manga scans and watching subbed made it worse for me because no matter how much I tried to get into it I couldn't. I'm lucky there's one friend who doesn't push the issue and she's the only friend I respect when it comes to that now.

I went through this with ASOIAF and later GoT. I didn't like the books. Didn't bother with the series. Some people had real trouble stomaching that.

Ugh, I've had the same thing but with Full Metal Alchemist.

Anyway, seriously, just tell the dude that he's bothering you and it's making you upset. Going back to the ice cream shop metaphor I used a few days ago, he keeps shoving a spoon full of his favorite flavor in your face and telling you to have some. Now all you wanna do is smack the spoon to the floor and possibly punch him.

Sooooooooo... yeah, I guess being very clear and honest that you have no interest and want him to 100% stop being a walking advertisement.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, I have this with friends who insist I should loooooove Life Is Strange. It's just boring to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Love Actually". Hrrr.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, next time, just start singing the theme to the 4Kids dub. Loudly and enthusiastically. Ideally, that will shut friend up. If not, then just stop and glower at him.

Wow, you gave it that many chances? I probably would've given up after the first shot. (Unless you were just saying so to get him off your back, in which case I totally understand.)

Don't let anyone pressure you into spending your time on something you don't care about; there are too few hours in the day.

And honestly, your friend sounds pretty irritating; he doesn't seem to know when to give up, so I think you need to flat out say, “I'm not going to try this thing because I don't want to."

OP Here

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I just read it in the US version of Shonen Jump (I had a physical subscription to it back in the day) and saw a few episode of the 4Kids dub (also back in the day). I said the rest of the stuff just to shut him up. I've got too much anime backlogged as it is.

He's a great friend, so I guess I just don't want to hurt his feelings because he loves that damn series so freaking much.

Lord of the Rings. Goddamn that fandom was long lived. It still sits in the walls like stale cigarette smoke.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Have you told him straight out that you are not interested? Sometimes when someone is passionate about something they really want to share it with others. If you remain silent or don't make it very clear you are not interested then he doesn't know to stop.

I know it seems rude and you might offend him but if it bothers you that much then you have to assert yourself.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I feel this, I've had One Piece fans do the same to me. I'm sure it's a very good series but it's not for me. I am not going to love it as soon as I experience it the "right" way. (Also at least in my experience OP fans are terrible with the 'oh you didn't like the manga? Just read until [x chapter] and you'll be hooked!' except that [x chapter] is somewhere in the 100s and no sorry I'm not going to read over 100 chapters of a manga I'm not really that into just on the promise that it will eventually hook me.)

Had this similar experience, but with shows like "The Flash", htgawm, sense8, "Hawaii Five-0","Cardfight!! Vanguard", any of the Yugioh spinoffs (5Ds, GX, Arc-V) and most recently, "Quantico". Tried them and couldn't get into them.

Don't let anyone pressure you into something you don't like, because at the end of the day, not everyone's going to like the same things. People are just different and each and every one has different interests.

Honestly, your friend sounds rather irritable, because your friend seems like the type that doesn't take "no" for an answer.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you on this so hard. I tried watching One Piece, and I was immediately turned off of it. I don't ever want to watch/read it, it's just not my thing. I'm sorry your friend won't take no for an answer.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You SHOULD tell your friend to stfu, to be honest. You've tried the thing he likes - in multiple formats! It didn't work for you and you have no interest in digging further, tell him to respect your opinion and get off your back about it

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
OP actually lied about trying it in all those formats. OP actually just tried the butchered versions that are pretty much universally accepted as really, really bad, and then lied to their friend about it.

You've been more than patient. Time to tell him to STFU.

Ugh I've had people do this to me with both One Piece and Naruto, I gave them a try but they didn't grab me, but me just not liking them was not an acceptable response apparently. :|

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Your friend sounds like he's being annoying, but depending on how good of a friend he is you might want to consider following along with the story, just so he can rave about it to you, since it sounds like he really loves it.

I don't mean you should profess to love it or anything. But if he loves it, he'd probably really appreciate watching it with you sometimes, or just talking about it with you. Unless your friend is not the sort of person to ever return the favor.

I think part of maintaining adult friendships is making an effort to support your friends interests. So like, I won't watch GoT with my friend because I really dislike it, but I will watch Covert Affairs with her even though I find it boring. But she watches X-Files with me, so it's a trade off.

That may be how your friendship works, but OP doesn't owe it to anyone to force themselves to follow something, especially if they've been hounded about it.

I passionately love Danny Phantom, but I don't expect my friends to pick it up and follow it just so I can talk to them about it.

OP, I get it so much.

Just like you, I have a friend who's really into One Piece, so I gave it a chance to 1) the official translation 2) the fan scanlation 3) the anime (subbed).

I got bored with all of them, so I gave up and then I made the mistake of saying that when someone else reced me One Piece.

The result was pretty much the same things you mention: that person and their friends decided to go over and over about how I should give it another chance and then, to make thing worse, some of them decided to shit on the stuff I like to ~prove~ the only reason I didn't like One Piece was my shitty taste and that needed to be fixed.

And that's the reason I despise One Piece, which hasn't changed because every time I meet a One Piece fan they always insist on how great it's and how I should give it a (or another, if I say I already did) chance.
I swear no other fandom has so many fans that can't accept a "I don't care about you favorite anime".
