(The Pioneer Woman/Ree Drummond)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like her show because she's all "Pioneer life!" And then I all "watch what I can do with crushed Oreos!" Putting things in mason jars does not make them pioneer evocative.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Making them evocative of pioneers is exactly what it does. What it does not do is make them actually like pioneer life, or good or virtuous or decent in any way.

Ack, my mom watches her, and I can't stand it. The "cowboy" theme is so obnoxious and forced (I think she has a quota of how often she's supposed to say "on the ranch", and number of shots to various cows and horses, bleh) and her acting is the worst. That voice just grates on me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well she's not an actress, so why would you judge her on that?

100% agreed. I dig the aesthetic she's trying for - I really do - but, yeah, I don't think her execution of it is very good. And I personally find her a reliable recipe source at all - they're all too Food-Network-isized. I can't stand that kinda recipe.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
What does Food-Network-isized mean? (I haven't tried out their receipes enough to notice any overarching pattern.)

I can't watch her show because I find it to be too much but I did randomly stumble on her rum cake recipe, which turned out to be super simple and amazing and I'll probably turn it into one of my classic recipes by messing with the proportions/liquor.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
www.hillbillyhousewife.com/ Is a much better blog because she knows what it's like to be poor and having to to stretch a dollar. I would watch a show with her on it in a minute. Ree is a phony.

FML I thought these were the same people for like forever.

Hillbillyhousewife is EXCELLENT. I do like some of Ree's recipes, but it's all so orchestrated and stiff.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up on her blog several years ago because so few of the recipes suited my Australian tastes (she's just a tad TOO American...sorry :P). I much prefer Smitten Kitchen and Joy the Baker.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's not an American thing, she just has shit recipes.

It's nothing new. From old advice columnists pretending to be married/female/in a different social class to reality shows like Duck Dynasty where the hosts are way wealthier/business-minded than portrayed.

For some reason old fashioned and country is a niche that sells well.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason

Because 'Murrica, that's why.

I don't know what's the worst Food Network show anymore, as Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee and Money Saving Meals are off the air (I am aware of the recent news in regards to Sandra Lee's health and I'm pretty sure she's probably nice in person, but her culinary skills are questionable). The Pioneer Woman might go into that category (could be Food Network's excuse for fans of the network as a replacement for Paula Deen, due to the controversy surrounding her).

What ever happened to shows like "The French Chef", in which the host (i.e. Julia Child), tells you how to prep your meals, which cutlery/pans/choice of meat and ingredients to use and shows you how to do it well?

I'd rather watch Ina Garten, Lidia Bastianich, Martha Stewart, Giada, Valerie Bertinelli, or Trisha Yearwood.

I fucking hate self-proclaimed "foodies".

You know society is fucked when there's an entire subculture of people who define themselves by getting pretentious about friggin' food, of all things.

I have never watched her show, and find it bizarre that she's suddenly all over Wal-Mart, but I shall buck the trend and say: i really love a lot of her recipes, i don't really care where they come from

I watch her show mostly to yell at the TV for stress relief.

"GodDAMN it a 'combination of hamburgers and grilled cheese'? You made a cheeseburger! That's it! You put cheese on a damn hamburger and called it a hamburger and grilled cheese mix-up? Come back to me when you have a hamburger with two grilled cheese for buns!"

Or her constant blatant sexism when she rambles on about how women naturally like light healthy food like vegetables and men like meat and grease and fat and she just gets so excited when the men are away for the evening so she and her 'girlfriends' can pig out on celery sticks and no fat yogurt dip.

Plus, lots of people hate her because her recipes are lifted straight from other people.

Somebody's butthurt.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. She's got the iced coffee recipe I use and enjoy every summer. I routinely look online for recipes and if the one I use happens to be hers, yay. I don't go looking just on her site. Kudos to her for figuring out how to get mega-paid for cooking. But from a previous comment, now I'll have to go find that rum cake recipe...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-02 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
SAME. I make more from scratch in my tiny urban kitchen than she does in her big fancy ranch house and it drives me insane. "Tee-hee, just open all these cans and jars! It's the pioneer way!" I just can't with the amount of mayo and cheese and sugar she piles into her recipes and I am far from a health nut.

CS,B: I watched about two episodes with my friend, because we'd never heard of her and thought it would be a Little House on the Prairie sort of thing. Then she went grocery shopping and bought a jar of minced garlic and my friend flipped her lid.
