Kind of based on #2

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
How much swearing do you like in your media? When does it bug you?

Re: Kind of based on #2

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There is no amount of swearing that bothers me, in either direction.

The point at which it becomes gratuitous and seems like it's the writers trying to be edgy and not the characters being naturally foul-mouthed.

Where that point is depends on what canon, circumstances, and setting ofc.

This exactly. If it fits the characters I'm fine. If it fits the scene I'm fine. I just hate when swearing is thrown in just for the sake of swearing and it feels unrealistic for this character and setting.

For me, it's when it feels like the writers wanted to show they're not afraid to be edgy, so the characters have to say "fuck" every other line. There was a British comedy being advertised - I forget what it was called, basically an American guy traveling for business gets a woman pregnant - and it was billed as so intelligent, yet every line was "fuck" "asshole" "cunt." In everyday, normal conversation. I don't mind "fuck" or "asshole" (I do have issues with "cunt"), but every other line?

On the other hand, if a zombie's chasing after a group of people, I hardly think they're going to go "oh, gosh darn it to heck," either. Although even then, if that's half the dialogue it starts to get annoying.

It doesn't bother me at all - if it feels natural. If it feels really try hard it bothers me, but not because I'm offended, just because the dialogue sounds really try hard.

I think dialogue just needs to make sense for the characters. And adding a bunch of swear words can be a cheap way to make your character seem really "serious" or badass, but there's nothing inherently wrong with using swear words either.

It only bugs me when it's unrealistic, and that can be in several contexts:

1. Swearing that sounds like it was thrown in because the writers were trying too hard to make the characters cool and edgy. A pretty good example of this is the movie Juno.

2. Swearing that sounds like it's inappropriate for the character. Can't currently think of an RL movie example, but having ...say... Batman or Captain America using strings of expletives for no apparent reason.

3. Having characters who would reasonably be prone to verbal ejaculation abstain from swear words. A good example of this is EVERY PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN MOVIE.

I don't mind it in movies/tv. I actually can't stand when they DON'T have cursing for characters that would totally curse.

Can't listen to it during comedy shows (with a comedian). It makes me too nervous!

As long as it feels natural, which usually has more to do with the actor, for me. One example of BAD use of swearing by an actor is in Life as a House -- something strange but not crazy happens and the straight-laced good-guy sheriff (played by Scott Bakula) busts out a "What the fuck?" and it's the least natural thing in the world, despite Hayden Christensen adequately F-bombing his way through the movie.

What I REALLY DON'T like is fanfic that make the characters swear when the source doesn't. The only way I can tolerate it is if characters in the source use TV-friendly substitute words that you KNOW they wouldn't be using if it weren't a TV show (Supernatural, for example).

Nothing bugs me as much as when a swear is dropped exactly once in an entire movie. That's how you know it was gratuitously put there just to make the rating higher than it would have been otherwise.

I generally don't care for it much but if it's in character, it's okay.

However, I think I'm the only person in the world who was offended by "mewling quim" in the Avengers.

It bugs me when every character swears in the same fashion. During some boredom-induced listening spree, I marathoned the Leviathan podcast book thing, and it's like the author for this can not think of a single way to express distress, surprise, or anger about anything without a character going, "What the fuck are you doing!? What the fuck is this?! What the fucking that the that this yadda yadda etc."

Like, dude, get a bit more creative and give your characters some kind of differentiating voice because it gets especially glaring during their edgy moments.

If you're swearing more than me, it's probably too much.

Other than that have fun I guess.

The amount of swearing doesn't. If it doesn't sound like something the character would say or doesn't really fit with their background then it can throw me a little.

I don't mind swearing, but if it's practically every other word, then it loses its effect.

I don't think I'm bothered. I might be a bit surprised if it's huge amounts of swearing straight off the bat but then I just get used to it as the show/movie goes on.

I don't really care unless it's ooc.

For the most part, if the swearing feels appropriate for the decided tone and setting of the show, I'm fine with it. That said, when I'm watching a show where I genuinely admire the protagonists, I tend to prefer that they keep their swearing to a minimum. A few well-placed curses can be awesome, but if they swear enough that they start to sound vulgar, it puts me off.

I'm really only bothered if they use swear words that don't fit the character.

Playing Fallout 3 and NV a bunch, lately (since I can't run 4), an the use of 'poon' by Colin Moriarty and Corporal Betsy in those bothered me. It just didn't work for either of them. There's a few other characters, where the sheer amount of swearing had me rolling my eyes, but none of them made me cringe like Moriarty or Betsy.

Swearing here and there is not much of a big deal to me (I cuss quite a lot myself), but it bothers me when that's pretty much half the script.

Re: Kind of based on #2

Depends on what I'm watching. If it's something like say Torchwood, then I can handle a fair bit of swearing. If I'm watching something that was specifically designed for a much younger audience, like a cartoon or something, then something like swearing would throw me out of it.
