I used to loooove fic like that, back when I read still fic. I haven't seen many stories where the genderswap totally eliminates the gay from a pairing, though. Usually the swapped character will eventually revert to their original body but still be involved with the other half of the pairing. Maybe I just got lucky with the stories I found?

I don't see it as often anymore (though it's probably still hanging around), but it used to be pretty prevalent years ago when slash was still kind of controversial in fandom and people would constantly "flame" fics just for being slash. I used to see a lot of people who would ship things like girl!Harry/Draco and whatever who still talked about how disgusting they found slash to be in their profiles. It was pretty funny/dumb

A little off topic but I want more genderswaps where the swapped person isn't magically hot. The facial features and body structures that are deemed conventionally attractive on men and women are different, but somehow the really big broad shouldered man with 8% body fat and a sledgehammer jaw always turns into a small cute girl with a tiny round face and curves everywhere and vice versa.

It's like taking Korra and turning her into a 90 pound boy for no reason. Keeping the original body type even if it defies beauty norms would be so much more interesting than magically mary sue sexy

Yes please.

Aaaand now I'm imagining Korra the "genderswapped" 90 pound yaoi boy and cringing really hard.

It would especially be interesting to see how the characters reacted to becoming suddenly considered far more or less attractive, not expecting the different levels of attention.

Yeah I see this all the time with gender-swapped versions of characters and it blows my mind. It doesn't even look like the character anymore, it's just moe nguu high school girl with a few of the original character's accessories. I'm not sure why femaleness = de-aged 10-20 years and losing all of the body muscle the character worked to build, not just some, but that's what it seems to mean to 90% of the artists out there.

It does mean, though, that those artists who actually bother to make a gender-swapped version of the character resemble the original character and look like the could do the original character's job never cease to amaze me. It's like they put thought and talent into it and such.

Dustin Hoffman did an incredible interview once about how bad it made him feel that he wasn't a HOT woman in Tootsie. I found it very fascinating. The interview went into the psychological and sociological underpinnings. Good stuff.

Traumatic, forced body swap where only the necessary bits were altered:

The bit that always bugs me is when their hair changes. The length of your hair is not a secondary sex characteristic! But in the majority of sexswap fics I've read, men with short hair transform into female bodies with shoulder-length hair, or vice versa.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! I'm not so much a fan of AUs where Character X was always a different sex because I don't think authors always take into account the different ways it could affect X's experiences, but suddenly-different-body stories seem more likely to account for those differences well.

Those are usually jst a way for a writer who is opposite sex of the protag to self insert anyway. The amount Rose Potter fics from tween girl writers is staggering, and staggeringly awful.

Yes, I always think the real value of those fics is to study how the different sex would have changed everything. The problem is a lot of fics don't go far enough in extrapolating that, especially in fandoms that have strong gender roles (yes I am thinking of all the female!Bilbo fics in the Hobbit fandom - do you really think it would be so easy in Tolkien-verse for a hobbit woman to run off on an adventure with thirteen dwarves?).

There's a really good book that deals with sex swap that might interest you. It's called The Archer's Heart by Astrid Amara.

The stories that don't devolve into wangzt or genericly bland "badass dudebro" stories. Not that he latter is unique to genderbender storoes. Male writers really ought to stop writing their Call of Duty persona into their fics!

I don't associate it with erasing gay from slash, I associate it with repulsive misogynists who have sissification fetishes and consider femaleness to be a kind of punishment.

You might want to check out the manga Until the Full Moon. And of course Ranma 1/2, which is about a teenage guy who comes under a curse to turn into a woman when hit with cold water.

I once wrote a non-romantic story where Shawn turned into a woman for a day, and Gus has to look after him. It was not fun for anyone. Except me. I had an amazing time writing it. :D

I wish there was more fic of a male character getting turned female and having to cope with it, and yes, fics where they don't automatically settle into being female easily.

I'm not against always!opposite sex either, but I feel that in fandoms with strong (old fashioned) gender roles people don't address how unsuited a woman would be for getting involved in things that world barely blinks and eye at for men. As I said in another comment, I don't think a lot of girl!Bilbo fics really look closely enough at how unseemly it would be for a hobbit woman (especially and unmarried one) to run off with thirteen dwarves, and though I'm not expert on GoT, I will just cite Brienne as an example I am aware of, of a woman dealing with the problems of not living a womanly role. Susch gender roles may have been worn down and done away with IRL, but denying they exist in some fictional worlds ignores great potential drama.

On a different note, my only issue with genderswap is fics that do always-a-girl to two male characters just for the sake of femmeslash. I don't actually mind that it exists, but I don't want to read it.
