I try not to kinkshame but same.

This really isn't exclusive to fangirls, OP.

Have you ever seen the internet?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What's creepy about it?

Fangirls gravitate toward any kind of ship where two people have an emotionally intense dynamic.

Sometimes that means antagonists, abusers, generally horrible people. But it's not like there's some kind of mysterious shipping vacuum around characters who have deeply caring and supportive relationships in canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
+1 Drama is interesting. Intense emotions are interesting. Abusive relationships (emphasis on the 'ship', I am not way implying that abusive relationships are good) provide a full spectrum of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The harder the pain, the starker the pleasure, and characters in these ships tend to go through rollercoasters. Visceral reactions to the intensity ensue. See also: action movies, torture porn, tragedies, Lifetime drama films.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
yup, this.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But you'd be cool if they gravitated towards relationships where a man is torturing or sexually abusing a woman?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
If they did it would be one thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm p sure OP didn't say anything like that and you're just pulling it out of your ass.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Questionable that they only mention that specifically tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
And by "they" I mean OP.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Because I haven't seen much in the way of extensive shipping between guys and women they try to sexually mutilate and torture.

... what rock were you under during the 50 Shades Hullabaloo and was it a very nice rock? What's the rent like on that rock?

Did the popularity of books like Twilight and 50 Shades fly over your head? That wasn't even a tiny niche group like fandom, it was the general public embracing that shit.

What I learned from reading this thread is that derailing a conversation about women by saying "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MEN?" is apparently perfectly okay as long as the RIGHT people are doing it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's even worse when the showrunners know about this and deliberately put it in the show. Idk if these things do that or not but I've casually watched stuff with my mom sometimes and noticed things that are obvious fanbait and it's just so cringey.

[personal profile] purpleseas 2016-04-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not my thing, but I understand it more when there's some kind of existing framework to the relationship beforehand, whether they were always enemies or knew each other before things got so dark or what. Eddie/Waylon is always an odd case to me in that they never actually have a conversation and Eddie is completely delusional throughout their short time together, but as someone writing several chapters of half-platonic Waylon/Miles despite them never technically meeting, I know how friendly that canon is to tinkering. When every character is a pretty minimal sketch with lots of blank parts to fill in, you have so much freedom. That was a really good cosplay, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because you really like the kink, but there's next to no f/f and m/f has a whole host of real life baggage with it. Sort of like how I'm sure at least a portion of tentacle rape is because you want the rape without the rapist character.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhhhhh lordy loo yes. I don't think anything's pissed me off more in fandom trends in the past few years than the amount of Outlast forced feminization kinkfic written by teenagers. And I'm a pretty sick fuck when it comes to kinks myself.
masu_trout: A little less than clever. ((PMMM) Charlotte *Bwuh?*)

[personal profile] masu_trout 2016-04-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's Outlast. The only reason someone would decide to play a game like Outlast is because they want to see some disturbing, messed-up, twisted stuff happen to a fictional person in incredibly close detail. That's the entire point of hardcore horror games like that.

Why are female fans who focus on the sexualized aspects of the game (which are 100% canon) so much more suspect than the male fans who are interested in the non-sexual gore and horror and despair? 'Excitement through terror' is the name of the game, almost literally.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I excuse it if the fangirl in question is like... under the age of 18, because a lot of teenagers have an ~edgy dark~ phase that makes everyone around them eyeroll

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-04-16 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I just like fucked up shit, the first got me to start reading A Song of Ice and Fire and the second I watched the LP of because of how fucked up it was.

Also that Eddie cosplayer should have at least tried to make themselves look buff, holy shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-16 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
...I thought I was a kinky bastard, but reading about these fandoms, yeesh, nevermind, I'm practically vanilla.

I do have way more of a tolerance for non-con in general when it is male-on-male, or even female-on-male, or occasionally female-on-female. Male-on-female non-con just pushes so many "no" buttons for me.

When I was sexually assaulted in high school, I was into Fushigi Yuugi. After that happened, I tried reading FY again, and some of the scenes... I just couldn't. There's some stereotypical shoujo manga shit, just guys being sexually aggressive all over the place, and I couldn't handle it anymore. I put the manga down and never went back.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what's in the back of a lot of women's minds. It's different when you see a guy getting raped, emotionally. It doesn't feel personal.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-17 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not cool to kinkshame OP. It's not like, in reality, women that gravitate towards non-con and abuse towards men are then going to go out and actually abuse a man. I actually think it may have something to do with the fact that (as someone mentioned earlier) women are more often the recipient of sexual abuse, both IRL and onscreen. Maybe they want to explore this, but in a way that's 'stepping back'. Just a thought...
