Re: Confession Thread

I think people who don't stay home when they're sick are selfish as fuck. Okay, so you can't afford to stay home... so that makes it okay to go infect someone else who might not be able to afford to stay home either or who might have health problems that could be exacerbated by getting ill? If people would just stay home then stuff wouldn't spread around as much and you would probably end up getting sick less.

Unless you absolutely positively HAVE to do something, stay home and keep that shit away from everyone else.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's not going to kill you just take it like a champ. And if you're so frail and delicate that the flu is going to kill you then maybe you should be the one staying home.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
so people who have some sort of health problem should just never leave the house because other people can't take one or two days off?

my best friend has cf, even getting a cold can be really bad for her. she shouldn't be forced to be a hermit because other people are selfish and thoughtless.

Surgical masks work wonders for avoiding catching respiratory infections from random passers by.

Your friend's probably more at risk for you giving her a cold during the presymptomatic period than for getting one from someone on the street.

I would blame the systems in place that don't always allow workers to take days off sick when they need to before I would blame the people.

FFS. Selfishness is not a fucking crime. It's not even an ashollish way to be. Being selfish from time to time is FUCKING ESSENTIAL. This bullshit "Be nice to everyone! Self Sacrifice all the time!" Bullshit people picked up from children's cartoons in the 80's and 90 and never let go of, it's such utter bullshit virtue signalling.

"Maybe I should buy food, someone else might need it more than me! *Starves*"

Except not really, because it's never the people in need who bitch themselves out for being selfish. It's not you saying "I should throw away todays wages even tho I can't afford it, I might make someone as ill as I am, and I should make it so that I'm the only one who suffers" it's you saying "I don't care what you need, You keep your suffering to yourself and away from me or you're SELFISH. I wouldn't be selfish in your shoes, so you don't have that right. If I'm not selfish you shouldn't be either, now go away and lose your money for my sake, you selfish asshole."

Re: Confession Thread

Okay, but if you think that people should just suck it up and deal with it if someone else comes in sick, then you are you okay with someone else getting YOU sick? Because if that bothers you then you're kind of a hypocrite.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody gets me sick. People get sick. It's a fact of life. Blaming a sick person for daring to share the same air as me? Thats some fucked up entitlement right there.

Some people literally can't afford to stay home. I'm not losing my job or failing a class over a cold. I definitely wish most work/university environments were more understanding, but that is their fault, not mine.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The average number of paid sick days/year in the US is 8, and most universities are so brow-beaten into catering to their students that, as long as you're not out sick on the day of the final, taking a sick day is unlikely to affect your grade appreciably. Stop trying to blame "the system" for your inability to take responsibility for your own shit, you entitled baby.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize there is a huge chunk of the work force that doesn't qualify for paid sick days, right? And that said chunk is not included in any calculations of average number of paid sick days?

And that for there to be an average, there has to be a significant percentage of the population that is counted in the study that falls below it? Or are you as terrible at math as you are at comprehending the reality of current standards of employee care?

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in university and I am allowed two sick days before it starts lowering my grade ten points at a time. Way to be completely ignorant and just running on baseless rhetoric about how "browbeaten" universities are.

Pay my lost wages, including the wages I'll lose if I'm fired for absenteeism due to calling out more than maybe twice in a year because the company I work for is extremely trigger-happy, and I'll stay home.

Otherwise, maybe work on initiatives to force companies to give their employees adequate sick leave to stay home for any reason less serious than a sudden-onset case of imminent death, rather than bitching and moaning about how ~selfish~ those employees are when they don't want to risk not being able to pay their rent.

Any industry that involves handling food should have paid sick leave. If it doesn't, I can't really fault minimum-wage workers for trying to make their paycheck. (Still grossed out, though.)

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
When I worked food service you would get sent straight home if you came in sick because the last thing they wanted was a contagious person handling/preparing food. Paid sick leave or not, they didn't want you there if you were sick.

I really think you're trolling because I'm pretty sure the last time f!s had this discussion there were some serious points being made about why it's not always possible to miss work.

If you're serious then stop wasting your time on f!s and go fight to protect workers so that everyone has paid sick leave and are given plenty of days of it too so that they don't ever come in contagious.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I will admit to going in to work when I had a cold, and not for the usual reasons stated in defense (no sick time, the world will collapse if I'm not at my post, etc.). It's because when I was a kid, my parents never let me stay home sick from school unless I was so sick I couldn't get out of bed. So when I entered the workforce, I assumed that was also the only good reason to stay home from work, and if you stayed home for anything less, you would get caught for playing hooky somehow, even if you had the sick time to take. Meaning, like, I thought I wasn't allowed to stay home for a cold. If I could physically do the job, I was required to be there.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Personally this bugs me more when customers do it than workers. Workers might be fired if they miss a shift. Customers? Different story. When I worked retail I had this conversation plenty of times: "How are you today?" Customer, sounding awful: "Ugh, I'm so sick." And yet you still left the house because you just had to go buy those shoes and now I have to worry about catching your cold and not being able to take the day off work. So I agree, only do the shit you have to do. If you have to work because your workplace is shitty about sick days, then go to work. But go the fuck home afterwards, don't go shopping and stop at the bank and go to the gym etc etc.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I can understand a worker doing it because not all jobs let you just call out sick, but you do not need to be out doing recreational shopping when you are sick. Not only are your potentially transmitting stuff to the workers, like you said, you're also transmitting it to all of the other customers who touch or try on that stuff after you do. I hated working retail because so many people would come in coughing and sneezing and obviously sick to try on clothes. No. That's gross. Wait until you're not spreading germs everywhere. You don't need that shirt right this instant.

For things like shoe shopping/clothes shopping, I agree, but for the love of fuck, people, stop giving me the stinkeye when I walk my feverish ass into the drug store to pick up my prescription and some OTC cough drops.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I used to actually get on a friend about this, she'd miss class but want to go out or go to work (where she could miss) and I'd always tell her if she was too sick to go to class she shouldn't be doing these other things.

Though as other anon pointed out I don't blame people for going out sick to get things for their illness, like I HAVE to go get medicine and food for myself when I'm sick because no one else can do it for me.

I dunno, if I'm sick I (usually) still have to eat, although if it's a stomach bug I probably would rather not. No one else is gonna fetch me oranges and tea and soup.

I agree with the general principle but like do you not understand that, because of shitty labor laws in the US, some people might literally be fired from their job for showing up sick? What if they have other mouths to feed?

Blame the terrible system, not the individuals struggling to get by within it.

Re: Confession Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I thought labor laws made it harder to fire people? At my last barista job I had a coworker who would always show up late and leave early and sometimes not even come in at all, and it took a few months before they could fire him because to my understanding there was some sort of red tape that they had to go through before they could do so even though he was violating all sorts of employee policies.
