I'm imagining Edna Mode going "no hair!"

I'm pretty sure that movie!elves have magic hair and so your argument is invalid. However, Glorfindel was killed when a Balrog grabbed his hair and dragged him down to his death, so Tolkien was on it. ;)

Is it really an issue with an archer though? They're distance fighters. And Legolas's looks like the hair parts that get in one's eyes are tied back anyway.

It's worth noting that if someone has you by the hair, then at least one of their hands is occupied with it, and they've locked themselves into close range with you until they let go. IMO going for someone's hair is a stupid move.

The advantage comes from the fact that the neck is not a strong part of the body, and your eyes are absolutely critical, meaning that grabbing the hair and pulling will certainly incapacitate the opponent.

You don't just hold someone by the hair. You grab and pull.

If someone has your hair they have the leverage on your body - where the head goes the body follows, plus it hurts your scalp.
It is absolutely not a stupid move, it is a very legitimate tactic in fights.

Getting hair tangled around the bow string would be a BAD thing.

I would not call Martha a traditional warrior. She rarely (ever?) got into a physical fight with someone. Legolas is an archer so would be pretty far away most of the time. Thor is a god, so for all we know his hair is magic and just pops off like a lizard's tail.

And Sam (or the ladies) also use guns a lot. Though, Sam also gets into a lot of physical fights so he he would be the most likely to get in trouble with it. Also, I hate his hair.

Related: I remember an episode of cops with a female officer. She had her hair in a ponytail with this fluffy pink scrunchie. As soon as I saw it, I knew she was gonna get jerked by it. Five minutes later, she goes to fight a disorderly dude. He grabs her by her ponytail, slams her to the ground, and runs off.

The picture of Martha is taken when she's a freelance alien hunter, though. Which presumably means a lot more combat?

(Ironically, when she wasn't doing combat stuff, her hair was actually much better suited to it.)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
While I agree, I do believe there were long-haired historical warriors who went hair-down into battle. Not practical, sure, but when you're talking about Legolas fighting in LOTR, his hair is really not significant on the list of what's impractical.

As a long-haired lady MMA fighter though, I basically always do french braid pigtails. It's fucking hard to keep hair pinned up when you're rolling/head otherwise touching the floor often - I've tried, it falls out and pins poke your scalp. Then again, grabbing hair is illegal in MMA, so as long as it's out my face I don't think too hard on it.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is hair getting in your face really a problem for a lot of people? Mine comes down to between my shoulder blades but the only times it ever really gets in my face is when it's super windy out or I'm doing something that involves me whipping my head around a lot. Otherwise it tends to stay pretty much in place.

But it looks hot?

I keep remembering how I watched a "making of" CSI or something, and they were saying: yeah, they should wear facemasks, but we don't want to cover the actors' faces all the time. So yeah, artistic liberties.

Yeahhh this bothers me too. I have long hair and I can't even do pilates without putting it up.

Extra irksome is when they come out of battle with their hair still looking perfect.

For me it depends on how realistic the show is supposed to be. Elves can do whatever they want, as long as they look pretty, haha. Thor is magic. Any show that's not particularly realistic, I don't mind the long hair.
It bothers me a bit more in something like SPN, which has some vague elements of realism, but most in say crime shows or whatever.
Also, if it's equal-opportunity stupid pretty long hair I am much more okay with it than shows where the guys are in serious combat gear, and the girls are all pretty with flowing hair.

I went on a rant about literally this in the GC like a week ago.

You're right, with one caveat: it actually isn't as advantageous a move as it's made out to be to grab someone's hair, especially if they're armed. (It's more of an issue in hand-to-hand combat, but it isn't the ~instant win~ move it's often made out to be.) This is why there have been many examples of warriors who wore their hair long as a matter of course (Vikings, samurai, Mongols, etc.) and their adversaries didn't just go "oh I know, I'll grab his ~hair~!" and win the battle. You need a hand to grab their hair, and the point of their weapon will be faster than you can move your hand - this is simple physics. Moreover, even if you were successful, they now have both hands free and you don't. They'll be able to overpower you and you'll be able to... pull their hair? It'll hurt for sure, but with the adrenaline pumping, you probably wouldn't stop someone even if you ripped out a fist of it. They'd rather not get stabbed and die.

That said, the aforementioned warriors always tied it back/braided it/etc. It gets caught in shit, as you say, but it also gets in your face because you whip your head around a lot when actively fighting - also sweating, etc.

The answer you seek is the same reason protagonists don't wear helmets in fantasy shit: it looks cool, and helps tell characters apart.

For me it depends on the setting. Like in fantasy or completely unrealistic stuff I can wave away long flowing hair, because it looks cool and frankly the characters are ignoring the laws of physics all the time anyway.

But if it's a more realistic setting then I'd like for the hair to be pulled away from the face for the sake of practicality.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Unrelated but the way that Thor picture is pixelated makes him look like he's either covered in glitter or his hair is made of tinsel. I can't decide which.

This, like ridiculously non-functional armor or high-heeled shoes on women detectives (or male detectives, for that matters) we are supposed to ignore out of polite suspension of disbelief in favor of fashionableness. I understand that, even if it's irksome.

I would sincerely love to see Loki get grabbed by his long hair and his face slammed into a wall someday.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
In the second season of Daredevil, Elektra had her hair out and got grabbed and thrown to the ground by it. I thought it was a great scene and that now she'd tie her hair back. But no, her hair was either out or in an easily grabbable ponytail for the rest of the series!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! It's the same as women fighting in heels. It's not the end of the world, but it just takes away from the realism.

According to an unnamed source (my husband), most warriors DID wear their hair up or tucked into their clothing (down the back). BUT, the Viking Berserkers used to take their hair out of their braids and fluff it out to display their feelings toward their opponents - that the opponents weren't worthy of taking care with. They weren't worthy opponents. But normally, hair wrapped, tucked, hidden.
