What are you currently reading or looking forward to reading? Or what's your go-to reread?

Anything book related!

I currently have The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle next to my bed that I'll start reading soon. Hopefully.

I've started listening to The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Ehh, it's okay so far. My go-to reread is usually Persuasion or Pride & Prejudice. Or North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell.

I really liked the first Rothfuss; but the second came across to me as self-indulgent and tedious. For what that's worth.

I'm finishing up Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad (aka Truckers, Diggers, and Wings). I read it many years ago, but had forgotten basically everything beyond the horrific specter "Prices Slashed" and what the Cat is.

Help!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got a bunch of Star Wars books recently and I'm going on vacation. Should I bring the Thrawn trilogy or should I start on the new canon novels (Tarkin, Lost Stars, Aftermath, etc.)?

I'm (finally) doing my LOTR reread. I'm about 3/4 of the way through Fellowship of the Ring.
The beginning is slow, but I don't mind it. I think that maybe part of it is that since I know things only really start at Rivendell, all the time spent getting there seems like filler. But it also does make sense in terms of narrative.
I'm also remembering how different the movies are from the books, in some places - Merry was kind of shortchanged, wasn't he? He's absolutely not the comic relief, even if he has lighthearted moments.
And there are some really touching moments, too. I especially liked how when Frodo discovered his friends' conspiracy to leave with him, he had this moment of shattered trust - because even if they were conspiring to help him, they had still been spying on him and all.
Some things, like actually showing Gandalf's interaction with Saruman, were well done in the movie. And I'm not surprised they shortened the council at Rivendell XD

I've been on a books-about-writers kick I go on every once in a while. I recently reread Misery and an Andrew Clements children's book called The School Story. Today's book is Martin Amis's London Fields. Maybe I'll do Hygiene and the Assassin next.

On an Ursula Vernon/T. Kingfisher kick. I have determined that The Seventh Bride is the perfect book to keep next to my bed for those nights when I realize I'm just plain not going to sleep and I might as well sit up and read instead.

Currently listening to A Game of Thrones as I had some Audible credits and just got the whole series. I've read it once years ago, but it's quite nice to just listen to it while walking around or doing chores and the like. I like how Roy Dotrice reads it , though some of the pronunciations annoy me a bit as they are different from how they pronounce it on the show.

I have about 10 chapters left, so I'll probably finish it this week and then go over to A Clash of Kings next.

I've been so busy I haven't read recreationally in a while, but I really need to get around to reading Story of The Eye by Georges Bataille, cause a professor lent it to me and I should get it back to him eventually? (Don't look up the story if you are squicked by grotesque sexual stuff :/ )

I also left off with The Island of Doctor Moreau a few months ago and I need to get back and finish that, its not a long read, my attention span is just so shitty.

I'm reading "Murphy" by Samuel Beckett, and it is an absolute delight. He is so fucking funny, like, who knew?

"He had a curious hunted walk, like that of a destitute diabetic in a strange city."

That is some next-level gift for imagery, right there.

Just got a Kindle for my Birthday. I think I'm going to reread the Force Awakens novelization first. Not sure after that. I'm still setting the thing up. Took most of today.

Currently reading "Unplugged" by Donna Freitas and "A Darker Shade of Magic" by V. E. Schwab.

I love "A Darker Shade of Magic" SOOOOOO much. The sequel was great, but it ended on a cliffhanger so I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

I just finished Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill, a YA romance.

It was okay. It has a lot of internalized misogyny that was pretty gross, but it was a quick, easy read. I gave it three stars on Goodreads.

I'm reading Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas. It's okay. I was led to believe it was amazing.

Before that I was reading Never Judge a Lady By Her Cover by Sarah MacLean, and it actually was amazing.

Just finished Life of Pi, planning to watch the movie this weekend.

I'm currently reading Origin of Species as my 'at work' book, but I think I'm going to switch it for Fellowship of the Ring. I always have more trouble reading nonfiction at work because I lose the thread of what I'm reading from interruptions ever 2 minutes, but I keep forgetting and bringing them.

I just picked up a library book called Unforgettable about spies and quantum mechanics. It thought it might be something my father would like, but I thumbed through it myself and it seems kind of cool.

Re-reading Tolkien's Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle Earth. It's a collection of a ton of notes and essays and half-finished stories and summaries, the content is really incredible on its own even if it is kind of a pain to get through, but Christopher Tolkien's increasingly bewildered "I'm sorry but I honestly have no fucking idea what dad was going for here or which of these three versions he preferred don't judge me" annotations go a long way too.

And seriously every single time I re-read "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn" I fall in love with Galadriel and Elrond even harder than I already have, which I thought was impossible.

I'm working my way through the Vlad Taltos stories. My, does Vlad get the shit kicked out of him. Also, interesting how Brust writes so many overpowered characters without ever tripping the Mary Sue alarm.

And there's, there's so much inter-book continuity, it's amazing.

Currently reading: La Pierre de Lumière by Christian Jacq, The Tulip Touch by Anne Fine.
Looking forward to: The Long Mars by Pratchett & Baxter.
Re-read: used to be Goog Omens by Gaiman & Pratchett, but it's been quite a while since the last time; now I'd say The Martian by Andy Weir.

I've just started Para Handy for the FS bookclub. It's pretty funny and endearing, which I didn't expect at all. Although I think the format could get old pretty fast, if you read them all through over a short period of time.
