26. They're TRUER than true love. I'd pick Princess Bride over Twilight any day of the week~

52. That paring=only reason I put up with TRC for 100-ish chapters D:

01. LOL, PIC. *dies*

15. Hey, whatever does it. Better than doing 25 to life, right?

41. It's probably just an outlet. I don't think it's something like you're becoming homosexual or anything like that. In fact, because you're heterosexual, it may just be a way of exploring the male psyche or something. ...IDK, I'm starting to sound like a psychologist or something. :P

62. It's okay, me too. :) It used to not bother me much, but now it's just like... gtfo with your OMG LOL MENT 2 B shit, please.

20. Not my OTP, but I can see it. Good luck finding fic, though. I ship two guys much, much more popular then they are, and I still can barely find any.

21. Me too. Guess we'll see pretty soon. (I really hope that we're right.)

26. I haven't read Twilight, but I still agree with you. I don't consider the 'controlling, obsessive love' to be true love at all. It speaks of major psychological issues. I can only read/watch anything dealing with that kind of relationship if it actually deals with the implications, rather than putting it on a pedestal. Otherwise I just get completely squicked out.

33. Holy...shit. Too...awesome; overriding brain. Cannot...write...without...ellipses.

34. Same here.

40. Why would that make you a hypocrite? All it means is that you have good taste (IMHO), and like characters based on personality rather than ideology.

55. I disagree. Honorifics are something that I genuinely believe cannot be properly translated. I understand much more about the characters' relationships when they're left in.

40 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-04-06 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehh, I was jsut worried that people would see "Sensui fan" and think "OMG HE HATES KOENMA AND MITARAI!!!1!" because of the ideology stuff.

15. oh my god that's so cute

55. Out of curiosity (I don't translate), how do you suggest translating "senpai" into English? "Mr." is utterly ludicrous in a school setting, as multiple official translations have proven, and to remove the honorific altogether would be to undermine the respect system between upperclassmen and underclassmen in Asian society.

55

[identity profile] khym-chanur.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
In Ranma 1/2 they could get away with translating "sempai" as "upperclassman", but only because it was only ever used by Ranma and Akane when referring to Kuno, and even they didn't use it all the time. I've seen a few series that have "sempai" translated as "senior", but that doesn't work in all circumstances.

15. Haha! Best secret EVER!

21. ME TOO.

26. I agree. The Twilight series is a guilty pleasure of mine, but Edward and Bella really are the worst couple in the history of humanity, in every way possible.

52. Those two are the best part of the series.

26

[identity profile] savannahjan.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight is a guilty pleasure of mine as well. And I can't stand the E/B relationship.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
41. When I was younger, I was always told that my characterization of men was better than that of my female characters. I came to prefer writing the former as a result. Later, I came to realize that it was because I wrote my female characters more like myself, and soon after, that social perceptions of women are to blame, not my writing. Lol, I'm not a "realistic" woman.

You might be having the same problem. Stop seeing your female characters as "females" but instead as "characters", and let them be whatever the hell you want them to be.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-06 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but...
I feel like my male characters are better-written on the whole, and that my female characters are a little too 'perfect' (and the male characters are closer to me than the female ones). When I was younger, it was the other way around...

I'll have to try your suggestion, anyway, though. It sounds slightly difficult but a good idea.

52-This couple is SACRED, your friends are just being silly =D

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But a big chunk of fandom loathes Sakura and hates S/S because they get the spotlight and "steal it" from Kurogane and Fye.

05. Juri/Utena? ...iiiiinteresting.

15. Hey, as long as you're not hurting anyone? Sounds good to me. Like punching a pillow.

20. Actually...I don't doubt this. XD Or at least there was some fooling aorund when they were training under Happosai...

23. .... what.

26. THANK YOU. (Not exactly agreeing with the second example, but still. YOU HAVE A POINT.)

32. ...uh...that's pathetic.

As someone else mentioned, there are many characters with that scar. Kenshin wasn't the first - his was just the largest with the most story around it.

1. AHAHAHA THAT PICTURE A+++

15. ...That is actually a really good idea. |D

41. Me too, sadly enough. Somehow, most of my favourite characters are male, and with my favourite girl characters, I just don't want to mess them up. Weird, that.

48. ...Dead horse, etc etc

52. I think they're cute, they just don't interest me. But... "pawn"? I can understand "pown", but... "pawn"? WAT.

55. Yeaaaah, English doesn't have the same distinctions, and it's odd to attempt to translate it because of different social speech patterns. Whenever I see no honorifics, I think they're lazy or too afraid to be seen as 'weeaboo'.

55

(Anonymous) 2008-04-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I don't disagree with the original secret, but... can't we accept both alternatives (leaving the honorifics in and translating/removing them) as valid translation choices? Translation is far from a precise science, and a lot of it comes down to personal preference, so it's hard to say sometimes what's "wrong" or "lazy." I actually do both, myself, depending on whether what I'm translating is set in Japan or not.

- not the OP obviously

28. Gah, I hate that weeaboo crap. I took 3 years of Japanese, I go to conventions and cosplay, I watch anime and read manga and yeah, I listen to some Jpop/rock/anime music. But for the love of all that's holy, I'm not obsessed with Japanese culture. Hell I like the anime and manga more than the culture. I /do/ enjoy other things as well :/

41. I'm a straight female and I'd rather roleplay males too. It's much more fun if you ask me because it's stepping outside of what you are used to as a person.

04. DIRTY JOBS

06. I don't really understand the obsession with him.

Except that I do, because I know the Jonas Brothers are THE band of the hour and he's kind of like the fourth Jonas Brother but not but he so could be.

His voice bugs me.

07. Take pride in your big-name-fanness!

09. Yeah, you can't tell the nation.

I think that if Stephen's living out a lifelong dream it's all good, but otherwise it's kind of GB2/THEWORD/.

11. I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE

I DRINK IT UP

15. Only now I want to try that. Except my Pokemans that I never switch unless I need Waterfall or Whirlpool are all at level sixty and don't faint so well and I'm not fighting Red just yet.

Crystal on VBA = win.

22. Doesn't matter; I'm sure he'd look better than John Travolta in a fat suit.

He's just not Danny Zuko anymore...

23. ... wow.

25. Many lesbians write gay male porn.

Many.

Fandom is where lesbians come to spawn and center their sapphic majikal powerz before consecrating their menstrual blood collected in a mooncup to Artemis/Hecate/Tina Fey. Then they all watch the Sailor Moon dub where Uranus and Neptune were cousins so they can be worked up into a furor for their frenzied Bacchanalia. Afterwards, they cool down by writing gay porn to remind themselves that there are still penises in this world.

Trufax.

26. I'll sound like an idiot, but THE PRINCESS BRIDE WAS A BOOK?

HOSHIT I FOUND MY SUMMER READING

Also, controlling and obsessive? As someone who will go against her ideals of letting everyone fangirl over anythign and publicly decry all fans of Twilight, explain this badness of Twilight in as evil a way as possible so I may think even less of those who read it.

28. You can ask someone who knows Japanese, too, if it's just for that page.

41. I'd rather write from a guy's perspective, too. It's so interesting and it's really useful if you like learning about people and genders and how the other half thinks.

Plus, if girls writing from a guy's perspective are crazy, isn't J.K. Rowling the worst offender of all?

45. Cock ring?

53. OMG THAT WAS A GOOD MOVIE RACHEL MCADAMS IS AN ACTSPIRATION OF MINE

60. ... WHY WOULD THAT EVEN COME UP

Unless it's in their personal journal, but even then, UNDER THE CUT.

61. Have you seen the Imaginationland saga? ;-) Or Tonsil Troubles, even?

[identity profile] yui-hime.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
26) I saw the movie first, too, and then my parents got me the book for Christmas and I was like "WAIT NO TOO THICK DO NOT WANT". But then I read it and it was just as awesome as the movie, if much longer and quite a bit different.

TL;DR GOOD BOOK, READ IT.
