Have you ever been "THAT" customer?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone in the service/retail industry has at least one story about "that" customer: the one who pitched a fit, called the manager, requested something bizarre, etc. Be honest, F!s: do you think you've ever been the person your cashier/waitress/salesperson told all their friends about? Were you just having a bad day? Were there extenuating circumstances? Tell us all.

Re: Have you ever been "THAT" customer?

Nope. It's surprisingly easy to not take your frustrations out on other people, especially innocent service staff.

I mean, if I had terrible service or some issue, I'll respectfully ask to talk with the manager, but I keep it professional and certainly don't throw tantrums.

one time my fiancé and i were out to eat and our food took over an hour to come and then the waiter--who was mad rude throughout--said he'd comp us for the meal, which was fine with us, and then he brought us the check and he'd taken $1 off our check. i was literally not sure what to say and so i was kinda like "you...said you'd comp us? this is not comping?" like if he said he'd take a buck off the meal, w/e, but he said he'd comp. then he said "ok i'll comp you your drinks." our drinks together came to like $4; our meal, which we waited over an hour for, was over $30. i was like "that's....can i just talk to your manager?"

manager came over the comped everything. as a food service survivor i felt like a bitch but the dude had a HUGE attitude and also said he'd comp a meal and took off $1.

Well, if I hadn't been with a friend, I totally would have turned around and walked out of Pie Five after learning they got rid of the whole grain crust. But since I wasn't alone, I settled for not being very quiet about saying "there went 80 percent of my reason to come here."

So, probably.

Twice. I bought some burgers at Sonic for the family. Got home and none of them had meat. I was so mad. I can understand messing up the condiments but HOW DO YOU FORGET THE MEAT?? I was mad and angrily called them about it. They told me to come get new ones so I had to drive 10 minutes back to Sonic and then it took 15 minutes for them to come out. :<

The second one was at Logan's. I tried this burger they sale that has like fried cheese on top. Bit into it and my hand got burnt with scalding hot cheese. It hurt like hell. Told the manager and she was all, "That sucks." So I messaged their FB page to complain about it.

Yes, and I've never been so sorry in my life. I have bipolar disorder. I had recently started "treatment" and my doctor gave me medication for depression, which caused a manic episode.

I had asked for fettuccini alfredo with no chicken. There was a very long line (it was sort of cafeteria-ish). After I paid for my food, I went to sit down and there was chicken in it. I went and there was still a long line. I went to the front and the lady told me I would have to get back in line to have it switched out. I was frustrated and started yelling at her to do her job and outright crying. People were walking away, it was so bad. I eventually just threw away the food and left.

After the medications were worked out, I was so embarrassed and apologetic. I still haven't gone back there.

I'm almost sure I made it into a story, but in my defense I was being a dick in response to a racist who talked down to me assuming I was a teenager then rolled his eyes and said "I can never tell the age of you people."

I was mad that the telemarketers kept calling me at 8:00 so when one of them called I said "Oh god, my father just died!!" and hung up.

When I was in college, I was trying to print out a very important paper when the computer lab printer broke. I absolutely pitched a fit and let them know how much they'd inconvenienced me.

I totally apologized the next day, though. Honestly, I felt horrible about five minutes after I realized what I'd done, but I was already on my way to class. It wasn't really their fault I had procrastinated.

I once walked across Hyde Park to go to Kensington Palace. My legs were aching by the time I got there (I have some physical issues and was forced to keep up with some classmates), only to learn the castle was closed. Not only that, but I would have to walk all the way back because the exit was closed.

I just about flipped out on the poor woman at the desk. I was in pain, I was stressed, and I'm sure she went home thinking "wow, Americans really are rude."

One time my girlfriend and I spent probably a solid half hour standing in front of the counter at Tim Hortons deciding what to get for dinner. At midnight. The cashier eventually left us alone because we clearly weren't going to need her anytime soon. In the end I think we ordered like three kinds of tea, two hot chocolates, and a bagel. I'm sure everyone thought we were crazy high, but we were just 21 and very absorbed in a private crisis/family drama.

I was once, but with giant extenuating circumstances. My family (7 of us) had a reservation for dinner and ended up with a 45 minute wait for reasons that are still unclear (the v. rude hostesses never gave us an explanation). I bitched about it on twitter and @'d the restaurant, expecting two things: mostly that a few of my friends who also hate being this sort of thing would share my outrage, and that maybe a few days later the restaurant would see it and apologize. About 15 minutes after I sent the tweet, the managers came rushing out and got us a table in the private room and personally waited on us. It turned out that people started tweeting the restaurant about it and that's when they found out we had been waiting so long (the hostesses apparently hadn't told anyone we were still waiting for our table). To this day, I still have no idea who was tweeting at the restaurant on my behalf; my best guess is that some bored trolls picked it up and started harassing the restaurant.

Making us wait 45 minutes past our reservation was ridiculous, but I still feel horrible that me bitching on twitter led to the restaurant getting freaked out.

I was one of those people today. Mom had a hospital lab test and was drunk; I don't drive, so we took the bus. She insisted that she wasn't so drunk that we needed to take a cab. By the time we made it across the street from the bus stop, I could see that she was going to fall and offered her my arm; she told me to fuck off, so I told her to aim for the grass if she fell. She insisted one more time that she wouldn't fall, turned her back on the grass, then pitched forward into the bark chips and shrubbery, narrowly missing the spiky wrought iron fence and clipping the underside of her chin, which started gushing blood. I got her up and across the street and onto the bus stop bench just as the bus pulled up. She insisted on getting on the bus, where the driver promptly kicked us off as a hygeine/safety issue. It takes a lot to embarass me; today did it. Especially as after I ran to the corner store and bought bandaids and tissues and cleaned her up as best I could, mom reached the garrulous drunk stage and talked at everyone most of the way to the hospital. She still had blood in her hair, all over her shirt, and a little van dyck beard of bloody scabs..

One day at Walmart had been the last straw in a day that had been so shit-tacular that I devolved into angry sobbing, because all I bloody wanted was a seasonal brand of cereal that was definitely out during that time of year and they were giving me the runaround about it when I just wanted my fucking COUNT CHOCULA.

I was definitely a raging cunt the one time I thought I had cancelled a "service" that originally came on one of those stupid store credit cards. I didn't call anyone names or make threats, but I was either shouting or damn near shouting. I don't remember if I was having a bad day or not, but it was just fucking annoying to get a bill in the mail for a credit card you hadn't even used in three months.

One time I went to order a meal at a fast food place and was asked the usual 'small, medium, or large'. I said medium, and then am told they're out of medium cups, would I like a large or small instead. I took that to mean that since I was getting a medium meal, they were offering the choice of a large or small drink in place of the medium they didn't have, so I said large, and then found out that they had meant it as 'you'll still get medium fries but we'll charge you for a large drink upgrade'. Which ticked me off a bit because it hadn't been clear to me that's what would happen, and I didn't really want to pay that amount more. What really turned me into 'that customer' though, was when I asked if that meant I could get a small drink and pay less, and was told that no, they didn't take off anything if you chose a small instead of the medium they didn't have. Then they got kinda snappy about 'well did you want the drink or not' and since I was on lunch break and short for time, I said fine, but totally in that 'I am deeply annoyed by this' tone.

I try not to be, seeing as I worked in most of those establishments, and I know how customers and managers can be. Most of the time it ISN'T the server's/Cashier's fault and making an ass out of yourself by yelling at them like it IS their fault isn't going to get you anywhere, so I try to make my interactions as pleasant as possible.

Unless it really IS the Cashier's/servers fault, then I talk to a manager. TALK, not rant and yell like an idiot. Talking is more likely to get you a replacement/coupon/whatever it is you're after. Yelling will just get you kicked out empty handed.

After a waitress spent the whole meal ignoring us to fawn over the only other customer in her section, (to the point that it took almost half an hour to even get our orders in) my friends and I left a note saying "Here's a tip, pay attention to your customers" held down at the corners with pennies.

Oh, probably.

I have food allergies, which means that at some restaurants, I have to make a special order. This inevitably means that sometimes, they get my order wrong, and I have to get it remade. This usually works okay - even if some of them are snippy about it, most of the servers I've dealt with will call for the item to be remade - but I'll occasionally run into someone who'll pull the "just pick it off" routine. Which, after a close call a few years ago, I've taken as a sign that I need to speak to the manager if I want to be sure that my meal will be remade properly. I'm always polite, but I know damn well that the server's going to get a lecture at best, and depending on the restaurant's policy, it's possible they'll be written up. I've worked customer service, and I know that at least once I've been "that bitch who got me in trouble" in someone's eyes.

When I am pitching a fit I make sure to repeatedly state that it's not them personally I'm angry with and apologies for my angry tone.

I imagine the insurance ppl are taking about me but I wouldn't expect it to be maliciously. More humour and amusement because I keep calling.

Not as a customer because I find it extremely difficult to rage at people working minimum wage jobs, but our airport/customs security people make six figures, so when they're overly slow or incompetent it can make me lose my mind.

One old guy at the baggage scanner was chatting with every. Single. Person. As they went through and the line was so backed up as a result that people who didn't need to were literally missing their flights. The man in front of me, who'd just missed his, tore a strip off him (verbally) over it, and he turned to me like "oh tut tut he must be having a bad day, right young lady" and I was like I'D BE HAVING A BETTER DAY IF I DIDN'T HAVE TO SPRINT TO MY GATE NOW, MOVE IT THE FUCK ALONG.

Just getting off a 15-hour international flight to make a domestic connection that had screaming children on it also did not help.

Rarely if ever. I'm the kind of person who is neutrally pleasant most of the time and who only gets more pleasant the more rude a service person is. Which in itself is probably more infuriating than anything in those situations.

Yes. And over extremely stupid stuff.

In my defense my thyroid was busted up and hardly operating at all and iron levels were so severely out of whack that it took more than a year of taking 80x the recommended daily dose of iron to get my levels back to ~barely within normal~.

I feel really shitty for how I treated people back then, now that I've got the medical stuff worked out, but back then even if I could tell I was being shitty to people, I literally couldn't stop.

I cried at the JetBlue representative to get a refund because my flight was cancelled due to a storm, my grandmother had had a stroke and my parents had had to fly to England unexpectedly and I needed the money because I had to drop a grand on a new last minute flight home because they weren't rebooking peoples' flights for a couple of days (and I had to get back to work).

I did feel bad afterwards, like I wasn't rude or anything, just emotional and she probably didn't need to see me cry.
