What is the worst way you've woken up?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-09-03 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I woke up at 7am this morning (after going to bed at 3am) to my mother screaming in panic, our dog barking, and items on my shelves crashing to the floor around me. I jumped up only to find out we were having a pretty violent and long earthquake. Apparently there was a 5.6 magnitude earthquake and the epicenter was an hour away from us.

As you can imagine, that was not a fun way to wake up. So what are some awful ways you've been woken up?

One of the scariest was when I was in middle school and we were on a field trip to Toronto. It's about 2 AM and the fire alarm in the hotel is going off and the chaperones are knocking on the doors to get all of us out of bed and out in to the streets, mind you this is April in Toronto so it's freezing no matter what. I barely had time to pull pants on and grabbed a light sweater but we were all freezing.

Our bus driver did grab the bus so we were at least able to huddle on the bus later, but it's definitely a moment I'll never forget.

I've never woken up to an earthquake, but I can imagine it was quite scary and I hope everything is okay!

Probably the pain of a kidney stone. Runners up: the third fire alarm of the night, getting elbowed in the belly (accidentally!) by a sleeping bedmate, the ghost in my old college housing acting up, getting shat on by a cat.

ETA: I'm sorry about earthquake wildness! That's so scary. I've only been in one earthquake; I'm from MA but was in SoCal. Everyone was from SoCal and totally accepted it while I wigged OUT.

Yikes! I hope you're all ok.

Awful things to wake up to... I'd say being woken up by the cat's incessant meowing when she's dragged dead mice into the apartment.

Lets see. There was the time I was woken up by water pouring down on my head. My room was the attic at the time, and the typhoon had caused a leak in our roof.

Then there was the time when someone pulled the fire alarm on our dorm at 3AM. Thankfully it was Autumn, so it was only cool. But still. I had an 8AM class the next day.

But I think the worst was the time I woke up to a flying cockroach on my face.

Pretty much every time I've been injured or been recovering from surgery in my life I've woken up in the middle of the night from pain. It always seems to happen at 3:30 for some reason.

I also wake up to the sound of my parents having sex a lot and then I have to go diving for my headphones so I can block it out with music.

Two months ago, I woke up crying because I dreamt I'd been forced to kill my brother. It was pretty damn awful, because it was one of those dreams that took a while to shake off.

And when I was younger and still in school, I got woken up just about every day to every other day by an emergency service at around 4-5 am. My grandfather had some sort of emergency button that had to be pressed every day before a certain time to signal he was still alive and if he didn't, it triggered an alarm. Which made the emergency service in charge of it phone us because he was living next door and tell us they hadn't received the alarm and we should go check on him.
So I got woken up several times a week thinking my grandfather could have died.

Are you in OK? I was just reading about that quake.

Anyway, having to get up and run to the bathroom to vomit was bad.

The worst was probably when I hurt my eye and was in too much pain to sleep deply and could only doze... and then wake up repeatedly from the terrible pain.

The scariest is kind of silly, but I'd unintentionally fallen asleep in the early evening and an Amber Alert was issued. Both of my cell phones (personal and work) started blaring this loud, weird alarm that I'd never heard before and wasn't an option for the normal wake-up alarm. First one phone went off, and then the other two seconds later. On top of the normal disorientation of falling asleep and waking up at a weird time, there was this horrible noise and OH MY GOD WHAT'S HAPPENING?!!?. (They found the kid and he was fine.)

Got woken up at ass early in the morning after a night of fitful sleep and perplexing dreams to be told my dad had died. I was expecting it and I still wasn't ready.

I saw that, Must've been frightening.

Probably after being in sleep paralysis. It used to happen a lot but it hasn't happened since we built a house...so obviously it was a ghost.

Getting my hands tied behind my back by cousins and beaten. We were all between nine and twelve at this point. Suffice to say I went ballistic.

Because it was funny I guess? Suffice to say they've all been arrested multiple times since and I have nothing to do with that side of the family.

Glad you're okay!

I wouldn't say this was the worst way ever, but I woke up after thinking I'd heard loud banging at the door at six AM. No one we know would bang on our door that early. I was pretty spooked, not knowing if it was just a dream or if some random person really was at the door. And of course because I was spooked I kept hearing random things and thinking "what if they're trying to get in?" I finally willed myself downstairs, and there was no sign anyone had tried to come in or been at the door.

A fire truck driving past my window and stopping to the house next door. Turned out to be a false alarm, luckily.

Having slept on my arm and waking up when it was completely numb, and it didn't regain feeling that fast.

I once had what I think was a night terror or something, and basically woke myself and the entire house up with bloodcurdling screaming without actually knowing why. I don't remember a dream. I just woke up screaming.

I also nearly threw my sister through a railing once (attic bedroom) when she shook me to wake me up once. Again, can't remember why, but it isn't nice to wake up and find you've hurt someone. These days people just yell at me from a distance rather than touch me to wake me up.

On a slightly more mundane note, my college apartment was in the middle of a block of student housing that was known to have at least one fire alarm set off a week, and I was woken up one night before an exam to find a bunch of pranksters still audibly standing around in the bottom of the stairwell and laughing after pulling the one on our block. Since I don't react well to being woken up in general, I made a bit of a sight thundering down the stairs in my nightie screaming bloody murder. Which was briefly satisfying, but led to a minor problem once I realised I'd come storming out sans a) a coat, and b) my keys.

Either my mother knocking at my door two hours earlier than my usual wake-up alarm to tell me that my best friend's brother had committed suicide during the night and woozily wondering if she meant my brother-in-law because they had the same name. My mother calling on the phone two hours earlier than my usual wake-up alarm to tell me that my grandfather had died during the night. Or waking up in the middle of the night in a pitch-black unfamiliar room from a nightmare where I had seen my kid sister getting raped and being unable to save her.

Pretty ordinary and not scary, but still awful: getting my period in the middle of the night. And then having to change bloody pjs/sheets...

My first period was... plentiful. I woke up to majority of my bed and myself covered in blood. If I weren't moving, I'm pretty sure it would've looked like I'd been murdered in my sleep.

Oh man that sounds scary, I've only ever experienced a very, very small tremor so big ones like that seem awful to go through. :(

But for myself:

I get sleep paralysis every so often and that's... well terrifying frankly, usually I just can't move and I know that if I go back to sleep it'll work itself out. But I have had auditory and visual hallucinations while I like that and it can be very, very hard to convince myself to go back to sleep when I can feel and hear something talking/singing at me.

Another was not that bad but scary in the moment was an oil depo place a couple of miles away had one of it's tankers explode in the middle of the night, the bang was so loud it woke everyone in my house up and we were all extremely worried for about half an hour while we kept wondering what the fuck had happened(eventually we all went back to sleep then found out the following morning what it was, and as scary as it might have been for us the people closest to it had it so bad, like roofs blown off and houses damaged pretty badly).

That quake woke me up too, but I was more like 125 miles away so it wasn't that bad.

I've woken up feeling like I'm drowning or otherwise suffocating and that's not fun times. And sometimes I'll dream that the landlord or my family or someone like that is about to come in, and not only am I half dressed but my house is a holy mess. I've actually woken up, bolted out of bed and run downstairs to look the door before realizing that wasn't actually happening. Usually about the time I get to the already locked door is when my brain catches up with me. That's probably ny least favorite way to wake up.

I don't sleep well. I'm sorry you woke up to a quake. I've only felt some very minor ones. That must have been scary.
