Scenarios in movies/books/etc. that make you thiink "I'd be screwed" IRL

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Either serious or comedic: what are some scenarios often seen that you think you'd epically fail at if you had to deal with them?

Mine below as an example.

Re: Scenarios in movies/books/etc. that make you thiink "I'd be screwed" IRL

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine: You know those scenes where someone will about to be Doomed For Real, and then some character tells them "oh, and remember, flip flops!" And the Doomed For Real character will instantly realize what they mean? I'm so bad at picking up hints that I'd just go "huh? huh?" helplessly. :P

I always wonder if I'd have the physical ability to outrun some serial killer in a movie.

And I know there's absolutely no way in hell I'd be cut out for work in some police force or in the FBI. Not only do I think I'd suck at the physical training, but if I got my first child murder case, for instance, I'd be like, "Yeah, I'm out. I'm done. Can't do this."

Honestly anything where I'd have to run.

Man... so, so, so many things.

But in particular, any scene where someone has to run and hide from some kind of remorseless enemy, because I know I'd freak out and get found, and also any scene where you have to hang from something, because I just don't have the strength.

Anything which involves recognising faces. Especially of someone I've only seen once or twice. How do people do that?

I particularly remember watching spirited away the first time, I was around chihiro's age. and I never could've done any of that stuff, but there's this one bit where she runs across a pipe and it like breaks off and she clings to the ladder on the other side. I couldn't have done it! I would've fallen!! also the trick question at the end where none of the pigs are her parents, I totally would've fallen for it. so not cut out to be a miyazaki heroine.

A lot of things tbh but especially anything involving upper-body strength, like if I had to hold myself up with just my arms I'd fall within seconds because I cannot do that.

My eyesight is bad, but I tend to forget this because I wear contacts all the time. So when characters are on a journey, lost in the wilderness, marooned, held hostage, living in the post-apocalypse, or whatever, I think, "Oh, right, I'd have to take my contacts out and I don't usually carry my glasses around, so I'd be screwed."

Any "quick-thinking" type of scenario. My mind blanks out under pressure, so any sort of "McGuyver a weapon or tool out of the materials lying around you, and do it under 30 seconds!" type of deal would probably mean I'd die.

Also, being a cop/agent in a Cop Show. Some of the criminals on those kinds of shows are such disgusting pieces of crap, that I'd probably end up in the cell across from them because I ended up slamming their head through a table or cold-cocking them or something.

I would probably be hopeless in anything active. Maybe I'd be okay in a support position, but not up front, hard physically active stuff.

Which supernatural creatures should make out

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously, there are all kinds of weird or supernatural creatures, like ghosts and werewolves and aliens and they're all great. But there's a question that no one's asking: which of them should make out with each other?

Just personally, for instance, I think the world would be a lot better if vampires were making out with wizards. But that's just my opinion.

How do you deal with friends "growing up"?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-09-15 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And , obviously in the non-literal sense, but I guess fandom is going to have more people who sort of remain kids at heart.

It's something I'm really struggling with lately... people around me having kids, buying houses, getting "serious" jobs.

And, I'm happy for them. I truly am. But, I have less and less in common with them. I guess for me they got a bit boring, and I guess to them I'm a bit immature. Ad to making it more frustrating, younger people that I might get on with are probably going to classify me in the "adult" category.

I dunno, I guess it sounds whiny, but I feel like the fun is slowly being sucked out. I mean, I used to do fun stuff with these people. I just don't really know how to deal.

TW: Suicide Anon Checking In

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon from a few weeks ago that mentioned being in a bad place (unemployed, broke, living with emotionally-abusive family member, etc.).

While I'm still living with the abusive family member, I've managed to keep to myself and not have a lot of involvement with them, which has helped. I've also managed to get a job (which gets me out of the house and away from the abuse), and while I'm not happy with the conditions (boss has never had anyone under them, so they're overly-harsh and snippy), I at least have a decent paycheck ($16 hr) coming in. Other than the boss being awful, it's not a very difficult job, and the other people working in the building are nice.

I'm going to build up a stockpile of money in hopes I can finally move out of town. It's going to take a while, but if I can buckle down and work hard, I think I can do it.

Thank you to everyone who gave me helpful advice back when I made the original post.

DSM-5 Exes, and other adventures in armchair diagnosis

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Out of the people who wax eloquent about the awfulness of their narcissist or borderine ex or parent, I wonder how many were the actual narcissist in the relationship. I'd wager the percentage is fairly substantial! After all, one of the narcissistic traits is denial of one's responsibility for things that go wrong--and what more conclusive denial of responsibility can you make than "I was the victim of a narcissist"?
